***Auction Highlight*** 1785 Pointed Rays Nova Constellatio Colonial Cent 1c Graded vf25 By SEGS (fc

Lot # 174 (Sale Order: 129 of 583)

***Auction Highlight*** 1785 Pointed Rays Nova Constellatio Colonial Cent 1c Graded vf25 By SEGS. Up for auction is a 1785 Nova Constellatio Pointed Rays. This co...morepper token was created based on Robert Morris’ original 1783 Nova Constellatio coin. What is a Robert Morris Original 1783 Constellatio you ask??? Well It just so happens I have that answer :The Nova Constellatio patterns were the culmination of two years of work on the part of Robert Morris,[5] the Founding Father credited with financing the Revolutionary War. Morris was unanimously elected the Nation’s first Superintendent of Finance in 1781; on February 21st of the following year, Congress passed the following resolution:That Congress approve of the establishment of a mint; and, that the Superintendent of finance be, and hereby is directed to prepare and report to Congress a plan for establishing and conducting the same.[6]The financier’s plan, developed with his assistant, Gouverneur Morris,[7] was ambitious: he hoped to unite the fledgling Nation with a monetary unit that would allow for easy conversion from British, Spanish, Portuguese, or State currencies to U.S. funds.[8] More importantly, Morris’s proposal would be the first system of coinage in Western Europe or the Americas to use decimal accounting – an innovation that has been adopted by every nation on earth in the last two centuries.[9]Due to the new government’s precarious financial situation, Congress did not put Morris’s plan into effect; however, Morris's decimal innovation was not lost on two of the Founding Fathers who examined Morris’s pattern coins: Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, the primary architects of the U.S. Dollar. Both men became champions of the decimal concept after examining Morris’s coins.[10]While Thomas Jefferson was in possession of the Nova Constellatio coins, he wrote a report entitled “Notes on the Establishment of a Money Unit and of Coinage for the United States”; in it, Jefferson concluded:The Financier, therefore, in his report, well proposes that our Coins should be in decimal proportions to one another. If we adopt the Dollar for our Unit, we should strike four coins, one of gold, two of silver, and one of copper, viz.:1. A golden piece, equal in value to ten dollars:2. The Unit or Dollar itself, of silver:3. The tenth of a Dollar, of silver also:4. The hundredth of a Dollar, of copper.[11]This is the first written description of the monetary system ultimately adopted by the United States, clearly illustrating the historical importance of Morris's patterns A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away Coin

Lot # 176 (Sale Order: 131 of 583)

***Auction Highlight*** 1852-o Gold Liberty Quarter Eagle $2 1/2 Graded Select Unc By USCG. An attractive Condition Census example with rich luster and an exacting...more strike. Pale golden-wheat shades dominate the obverse while richer honey color is noted on the reverse. The radiant surfaces show only the slightest ticks from bag storage under scrutiny and remain otherwise well-composed. This is undoubtedly one of the finest known survivors.Though from a relatively high mintage of 120,000 pieces, this date can be difficult to find in high grade. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note that "The mintage for this issue is much higher than that of the Dahlonega and Charlotte mint issues, but in Mint State, the coins are of similar rarity." Doug Winter notes that there are fewer than a dozen distinct examples in Mint State. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away Coin

1902 $20 National Currency Blue Seal Hugh McCulloch 'The Millikin National Bank Of Decatur, IL' Grad

Lot # 186 (Sale Order: 141 of 583)

1902 $20 National Currency Blue Seal Hugh McCulloch 'The Millikin National Bank Of Decatur, IL' Grades vf+. Hugh McCulloch was an American financier who played a c...moreentral role in financing the American Civil War. He served two non-consecutive terms as U.S. Treasury Secretary under three presidents. The series of 1902 Hugh McCulloch twenty dollar blue seal national bank was issued by national banks in all fifty states and even in Puerto Rico as well. National bank notes are different from other nationally printed currency in that they are printed specifically for each individual chartered bank organization. This assisted greatly in creating a system of bank notes that were the same across the country. This aided in travelers knowing what they were spending and receiving in change, rather than the times when each bank and state printed their own currency with their own designs. The National Bank Note system was abandoned shortly after the changeover to smaller size notes in 1929, making the third charter notes the last truly used issue of this kind. ***Auction Highlight*** 1888-p Three Dollar Gold 3 Graded Select+ Unc By USCG (fc)

Lot # 198 (Sale Order: 146 of 583)

***Auction Highlight*** 1888-p Three Dollar Gold 3 Graded Select+ Unc By USCG. Highly appealing Choice Mint State preservation for the penultimate issue in the cha...morellenging three-dollar gold series. Bathed in a bold blend of rose-gold patina and softly frosted luster, both sides also offer razor sharp striking detail. Among the most available three-dollar gold issues from the 1880s, the extant population of the 1888 has long provided Mint State coins for collections. The mintage of 5,000 circulation strikes was only nominally smaller than that of the preceding year and it is thought some 350 to 450 examples of the date can be found in Mint State, attesting to the fact that many examples were set aside by contemporary dealers. However, availability dwindles rapidly as one progresses up the numismatic grading scale. With strong eye appeal to match its solid technical quality, this upper end MS-63+ is to catch the eye of discerning gold collectors.

Lot #79 of the 450 Masonic Tokens from The Walter O. Collection

Lot # 199 (Sale Order: 147 of 583)

Lot #79 of the 450 Masonic Tokens from The Walter O. Collection. We Recently received a very Large Collection of 450 Masonic Tokens and coins. This collection ...morewas one man’s hobby for over 40 years. He collected each and every one with care and attention to detail and variety. Some of them are amazing and incredibly rare and highly sought by collectors and Masons. Here is a Brief Overview : Masonic coins often raise many questions for those looking to better understand the significance of the coins themselves as well as the symbolism represented in their imagery. In fraternal culture as a whole, symbolism has always been a significant part of these organizations’ identity, especially in Freemasonry, as Masonic coins are rich with symbolism, reflecting different events and characteristics of Freemasonry that give them the priceless value they hold. There are several varieties of masonic coins and tokens, and all tokens will fall into one of the following categories: a token celebrating a particular mason, lodge or event; an initiation token showing when a Brother was initiated, passed and raised; and finally the mark mason token (or penny) which signifies a pivotal part of a Mason’s initiation. Because symbolism was so important to fraternal culture, these small coins are rife with meaning. The most ubiquitous representation of the Masons was the letter "G" surrounded by a compass and square, representing the holy geometry of God. Some tokens feature the letters "H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S.," which means "Hiram the Widow's Son Sent to King Solomon," the biblical story that must be acted out to reach the third, or Master's Degree, in Freemasonry. Additionally, many contain either Apron and gloves: These symbols stand for living with a pure heart and to keep one’s hands clean. All-seeing eye: This symbol is designed to remind Masons that God and others always see their thoughts and actions. Ashlars: You may see rough and smooth ashlars on Masonic coins. They are to remind Masons of the contrast between man’s natural state and perfection and the Level: This symbol found on some Masonic coins reminds Masons that everyone is equal before God. We have broken the set up into groups of 5 Tokens in each lot. We have put 5 Lots per night over the 18 Nights of the Spring Auctions.
