Group of 3 Special Mint Sets 1965-1967 15 coins

Lot # 773 (Sale Order: 627 of 850)

Group of 3 Special Mint Sets 1965-1967 15 coins. In 1964, just when the mint was removing 90% silver coins from circulation, and the us was having a coin shortage,...more the Mint announced that beginning in 1965, no Proof Sets, or Mint Sets would be produced, Instead they would be making a Special Mint Set. Special Mint Set coins were not proofs, and were not uncirculated, Mint State pieces. Dies for the coins were over polished, while the planchet themselves were not polished. The resulting SMS coins have a brilliant, proof like appearance, much nicer than the run-of-the-mill circulation coins. In 1965 these sets were released in the Traditional Mint Cellophane and White Envelope and in 1966 and 1967 they were packaged in hard, pale blue plastic holders. Note, the set contains a 40% Half Dollar.

1935A $1 Silver Certificate North Africa, Signatures of Julian & Morgenthau Grades f+

Lot # 775 (Sale Order: 629 of 850)

1935A $1 Silver Certificate North Africa, Signatures of Julian & Morgenthau Grades f+. 1935a $1 Silver Certificate North Africa, Signatures of Julian & Morgenthau....more It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Were the Nazis under Field Marshall Rommel preparing a massive push through North Africa? If they did, and succedded, they could use the millions of dollars in currency the seized to buy war material. To thwart this, these Silver Certificates were sent to North Africa. Each has a yellow seal on the front. If the Nazis did succeed to over run our expeditiary force, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "North Africa" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find. This special 1935A $1 Silver Certificate was printed for use during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. It bears the usual 1935A Julian-Morgenthau signatures. However, this note bears a yellow Treasury seal instead of blue, to assure instant recognition (and devaluation) in the event of defeats by the enemy, or enemy capture of large quantities of cash. Known as a "yellow seal" Silver Certificate, this historic World War II currency note is highly sought after by collectors.

1864 $5 Confederate Note, T-69 Grades vf details

Lot # 791 (Sale Order: 637 of 850)

1864 $5 Confederate Note, T-69 Grades vf details. From the seventh and last issue of Confederate currency, these bills were authorized in February 1864. When these...more $5 notes were issued over 150 years ago, each one was individually signed and numbered. This $5 Confederate note has a pink overprint and a picture of the Virginia State Capitol in the center. In the lower right corner of the note is a picture of C.G. Memminger. This note was printed on plain paper with pink and black ink on the front and blue ink on the back. After the Civil War broke out in 1861, the newly established Confederate government began to issue it's own money as legal tender to the citizens of the South. The gamble was that if the South won the war, the money would be redeemable. The 1st note from the Government of the Confederate States of America was issued in April of 1861. From then on, notes were issued on through 1864. Almost every Confederate note was painstakingly hand signed and numbered. It is not uncommon for these notes to have uneven, or rough borders since scissors or shears were used to hastily cut the sheets of notes apart.
