1862 US Fractional Currency 5c First Issue fr-1230 Thomas Jefferson W/ Monigram Grades xf

Lot # 542 (Sale Order: 506 of 730)

1862 US Fractional Currency 5c First Issue fr-1230 Thomas Jefferson W/ Monigram Grades xf. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the beginning of t...morehe Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.

***Auction Highlight*** Continental Currency May 10, 1775 $3 CC-3 Sig W. Masters Grades Select AU (f

Lot # 547 (Sale Order: 511 of 730)

***Auction Highlight*** Continental Currency May 10, 1775 $3 CC-3 Sig W. Masters Grades Select AU. As with the $1 and $2 of this issue, high-grade Three Dollar not...morees are extremely rare. The PMG census indicates a total of 47 Continentals graded through and including the Three Dollar denomination, with only a single Uncirculated piece of this denomination at cu60. This note is well margined. The vignette is of an eagle and a heron fighting. The motto EXITUS IN DUBIO EST translates to "The outcome is in doubt.". An emission totaling $3,000,000 payable in Spanish milled dollars, or the equivalent in gold or silver, was authorized by the Continental Congress resolution of May 10, 1775 and approved by resolutions of June 23-24 and July 25, 1775 and put into circulation in August. The money, for "The United Colonies", was to be used to pay war expenses and was to be redeemed from taxes collected by the colonies. The paper, made at Ivy Mills in Chester County, Pennsylvania, contained blue fibers and mica flakes and was similar to the type used on Pennsylvania currency. The exception was the unique $20 denomination which was printed on paper made by Benjamin Franklin (thin white paper that had the left side polychromed by marbling). This bill is also a different size from the other denominations. The bills were printed by Hall and Sellers in Philadelphia using border cuts, emblem cuts, nature prints and hand set type. Apparently, thirty six of the borders were designed and cut by David Rittenhouse. The bills were signed with red and brown ink and numbered in dark red ink. Counterfeit detectors were on pink paper except for the $20, which was on blue paper. Denominations printed were the: $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, $7, $8, $20 and $30.

1861 $3 State of Florida, Tallahassee Cr. 7A First Issue Grades Vf Details

Lot # 562 (Sale Order: 525 of 730)

1861 $3 State of Florida, Tallahassee Cr. 7A First Issue Grades Vf Details. After seceding from the Union on January 11, 1861, Florida joined the Confederacy on Ja...moren. 28, 1861. An act providing for the issuance of Treasury Notes was passed by the General Assembly on Feb. 14, 1861. Thus began the first printing (FIRST ISSUE) of State of Florida notes, with dates of September to December 1861. Of special mention are the rare September notes signed by Governor Madison Perry who left office Oct. 1, 1861. All other notes of this issue were signed by Governor John Milton. Florida’s SECOND ISSUE of notes were printed as payment for Florida’s assessed share of the war tax for the Confederacy. They are all engraved with the January 1, 1862 date and are signed by Walter Gwynn as Comptroller and C.H. Austin as Treasurer. Florida’s THIRD ISSUE ushered in a beautiful new design which also included, for the first time, fractional notes of 10, 25, and 50 cent denominations. These fractionals bear the engraved date of Feb. 2, 1863, while the $1.00 through $10 denominations are dated, March 1, 1863. Both Third and Fourth issued notes were signed by C.H. Austin, Treasurer and John Milton, Governor. Florida’s FOURTH ISSUE notes were in reality a reissue of the Third Issue with a different engraved date of March 1, 1864. Florida’s FIFTH ISSUE notes were in fact it’s last issue during the Civil War and by far the rarest. Notes carry an engraved date of Jan. 1st., 1865, and were issued in high denominations of $50, $100, and $500. They were all printed on backs of 1864 Florida state notes and were signed by Governor Abraham K. Allison, whose term began after the suicide of Governor John Milton on April 1st. C.H. Austin signed as Treasurer. When Union soldiers arrived in Tallahassee on May 10, 1865, all Confederate and Florida currency became worthless. Governor Allison’s term ended on May 22, 1865, when he was incarcerated by Union troops.
