1863 $10 Farmers and Exchange Bank Note, Charleston, South Carolina Grades Choice AU/BU Slider

Lot # 641 (Sale Order: 583 of 730)

1863 $10 Farmers and Exchange Bank Note, Charleston, South Carolina Grades Choice AU/BU Slider. Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Company printed this five dollar note...more for the Farmers and Exchange Bank of Charleston, South Carolina around 1863. The note bears an image of three slaves picking cotton in fields, while another slave drives a team of oxen pulling bales of cotton. The number 5 is in a medallion in the upper right and left corners; the lower left features a portrait of F. H. Elmore, while John C. Calhoun is on the lower right. The signature line for the bank’s cashier is unsigned; the president’s line is signed by William Whaley. The Farmers and Exchange Bank was established in 1852, and operated until the end of the Civil War in 1865. From 1790 to 1863, states and private banks issued their own currency to supply capital in a young nation without a national currency. This currency was backed by the hard money the banks had on deposit, and was only used locally where the bank and its operators were trusted in the community. However, banks often oversupplied notes, and this overextension caused bankruptcy among private and state banks when financial panic struck, particularly in 1837. Currencies from these failed banks are known as “obsolete bank notes” or “broken bank notes,” and several are held in the National Numismatic Collection.

***Auction Highlight*** Old Casino 50c Roll $10 In Halves Sahara Hotel Las Vegas 1923 & 'D' Walker E

Lot # 653 (Sale Order: 592 of 730)

***Auction Highlight*** Old Casino 50c Roll $10 In Halves Sahara Hotel Las Vegas 1923 & 'D' Walker Ends. Up for auction is a Consignment I have secured a collectio...moren of old 1960’s Las Vegas Casino Half Dollar Shot Gun Rolls from various Casinos. These Rolls contain 20 Half Dollars. They have tight ends and are wild!. I opened three rolls to examine the contents and what I found was mostly Circulated Walkers, a few Franklins and a Seated coin or two and a couple of Barbers. But after I opened the rolls, I wished I hadn’t as they were so cool as antique Las Vegas Half Rolls. I have only seen a handful of these ever. The consignee has given us some additional rolls. We estimate the rolls to be worth $2000 each as a collectable antique, but if the roll is opened and has a rare date, who knows the value, a 1921 Walker even in low grade is worth over $500, and several other dates are worth over $200 each. But who knows, maybe a rare 1878-s Seated is inside. ($35k in g4), or an 1892-o Barber ($5k in G4). In any event the rolls themselves are amazing collectibles of a bygone era of the Rat pack and Las Vegas. From the rolls we have received there are 10 different casinos. Good Luck.
