***Auction Highlight*** 1847 Hawaii Cent 1c Graded Choice Unc BN BY USCG (fc)

Lot # 4230 (Sale Order: 1453 of 1910)

***Auction Highlight*** 1847 Hawaii Cent 1c Graded Choice Unc BN BY USCG. The 1847 Hawaiian Keneta (One Cent) was commissioned by King Kamehameha III, ruler of the...more Hawaiian Islands, under a newly established monetary system. The Keneta was to be the equivalent of the United States Large Cent; it was, in fact, minted privately in America. The designer and engraver was Edward Hulseman, who is perhaps better known for his 1837 Half Cent token. An obvious error on Hulseman's part was to misspell the denomination as "Hapa Haneri" instead of "Hapa Hanele". Although the coin was a disappointment to the Hawaiians, the Keneta remained legal tender until 1884 and circulated even later. According to Breen, Wayte Raymond used to travel to Belmont, Massachusetts in the 1950's to purchase Uncirculated examples from the descendants of the original minters!

It was the darkest days of World War II, just after Pearl Harbor. Everybody in Hawaii was sitting on pins and needles. Were the Japanese preparing a massive invasion of the islands? If they did invade, they could use the millions of dollars in currency on the islands to buy war material. To thwart this, these $1 Federal Reserve Notes were sent to the islands. Each has a large HAWAII printed on the reverse. If the Japanese did invade, the currency would be demonetized. After the threat passed, most of these "Hawaii" Notes were destroyed. Today they're hard to find.

Proof ***Auction Highlight*** 1857 Small date Braided Hair Large Cent 1c Graded pr65 bn By SEGS (fc)

Lot # 4248 (Sale Order: 1467 of 1910)

***Auction Highlight*** 1857 Small date Braided Hair Large Cent 1c Graded pr65 bn By SEGS. These dies were used to produce proofs of this final year of issue of th...moree large Cent. The color is a mix of light-brown and tan with darker brown areas on the lower reverse. Early proofs from this period are all scarce to extremely rare, with paltry mintages and high attrition rates. The year 1857 is particularly significant as large copper Cents were struck only in January, including some proofs, this marking the end of the format. A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
