***Auction Highlight*** 1886-o vam 17 Morgan Dollar $1 Graded Choice+ Unc By USCG (fc)

Lot # 465 (Sale Order: 452 of 529)

***Auction Highlight*** 1886-o vam 17 Morgan Dollar $1 Graded Choice+ Unc By USCG. The 1886-O dollar stands out as being the rarest New Orleans issue in MS65 or be...moretter condition as only four Gem specimens are known to exist. The current offering belongs to a small fraternity of high-end very near Gem 1886-O dollars. After more than 25 years of third-party grading, only three coins are currently documented at the MS65 level. Two MS65 pieces and a Plus-designated Gem and also the famous MS67 Deep Mirror Proof like coin that was considered by Wayne Miller in his 1982 reference to be "the most spectacular Morgan dollar now known." That piece sold for $231,000 in Bowers and Merena's November 1990 sale of the Chris Schenkel collection. But why is this seemingly common issue so rare in high grade? The mintage of over 10 million coins makes it hard to believe that so few 1886-O dollars exist in Gem condition. The 1881-S issue saw a comparable output of coins, yet well over 100,000 examples of that date are known in MS65 or better condition. David Bowers speculates in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States (1993): "At or near the time of striking in the nineteenth century, probably a few million coins, say two to four million, were placed into circulation and saw commercial use. Probably, millions of other coins, perhaps as many as six to eight million pieces, went to the melting pot under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act." Bowers continues by stating that "in MS64 grade it is extremely difficult to locate; probably somewhere between 125 and 250 remain. In MS65 preservation the 1886-O is the rarest New Orleans Mint Morgan dollar; at least one exists, but possibly no more than three." The steep drop of survivors between MS64 and MS65 is reflected in various price guides. For example the current Coin Dealer Newsletter indicates a staggering 21-fold increase in price for the 1886-O between MS64 and MS65 condition -- more than any other issue in the entire Morgan dollar series. The landmark offering of the current example may represent one of the few appearances of a near Gem issue this decade. The surfaces are predominately white and abound with intense cartwheel luster. Although known to be notoriously weekly struck, this 1886-O dollar boasts an unusually strong strike. The negligible scattered abrasions number fewer than the most conservative of graders would allow for a Gem Morgan dollar. A memorable specimen that was one of the prides of a great collector's cabinet. By far our finest ever offered. I will note that only 25 coins have ever attained ms64+, and the last 3 that sold, realized $13,800, $21,600 and $19,200. I wish you good Luck. (the last sales of ms65 were $152,750 and $149,500) A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

***Auction Highlight*** 1851-o Three Cent Silver 3cs Graded GEM+ Unc BY uSCG (fc)

Lot # 466 (Sale Order: 453 of 529)

***Auction Highlight*** 1851-o Three Cent Silver 3cs Graded GEM+ Unc BY uSCG. Bathed in shimmering, softly frosted luster, this gorgeous Gem plus issue lacks any s...moreignificant toning, which only adds to its eye appeal. The 1851-O silver three-cents represents the only branch mint coinage in any denomination smaller than a half dime prior to the 1908-S Indian cent issue. The present beauty is among the finest examples of this elusive issue. Tied for 5th finest known! A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

*Highlight OF Entire Auction* 1855-s 14-A Broken A Full E SS Central America Gold Liberty $20 By USC

Lot # 468 (Sale Order: 455 of 529)

***Auction Highlight*** 1855-s 14-A Broken A Full E S.S. Central America Gold Liberty $20 Graded Select Unc By USCG. Highlight of the Entire Auction. I piece of M...morearitime History, a Salvaged coin from the SS Central America. An 1855-s 14-A Variety $20 Liberty Double Eagle. The crossbar of the A in STATES is broken, but the E is complete. A splendid Select Mint State 1855-S double eagle that was carefully preserved in 8,000 feet of ocean water for nearly a century and a half before the treasure was discovered. Scattered, grade-consistent marks appear on each side of this lovely example that features brilliant yellow luster and frosty surfaces. Much scarcer in Mint State than the 1857-S. As backstory, The SS Central America, known as the Ship of Gold, operated between Central America and the eastern coast of the United States during the 1850s. On 3 September 1857, 477 passengers and 101 crew left the Panamanian port of Colón, sailing for New York City. The ship was laden with 10 tons of gold. On 9 September 1857, the ship was caught up in a Category 2 hurricane while off the coast of the Carolinas. By 11 September, the 105 mph winds and heavy seas had shredded her sails, she was taking on water, and her boiler was threatening to fail. A leak in one of the seals between the paddle wheel shafts and the ship's sides sealed its fate. At noon that day, her boiler could no longer maintain fire. Steam pressure dropped, shutting down both the bilge pumps. Also, the paddle wheels that kept her pointed into the wind failed as the ship settled by the stern. The passengers and crew flew the ship's flag inverted to signal a passing ship. No one came. A bucket brigade was formed, and her passengers and crew spent the night fighting a losing battle against the rising water. During the calm of the hurricane, attempts were made to get the boiler running again, but these failed. The second half of the storm then struck. The ship was now on the verge of foundering. Without power, the ship was carried along with the storm and the strong winds would not abate. The next morning, September 12, two ships were spotted, including the brig Marine. Only 153 passengers, primarily women and children, made their way over in lifeboats. The ship remained in an area of intense winds and heavy seas that pulled the ship and most of her company away from rescue. Central America sank at 8:00 that evening. As a consequence of the sinking, 425 people were killed. A Norwegian bark, Ellen, rescued an additional 50 from the waters.[1] Another three were picked up over a week later in a lifeboat. In the immediate aftermath of the sinking, greatest attention was paid to the loss of life, which was described as "appalling" and as having "no parallel" among American navigation disasters. At the time of her sinking, Central America carried gold then valued at approximately US $8,000,000 (modern monetarily 2019 dollar equivalent to $750 million). The loss shook public confidence in the economy, and contributed to the Panic of 1857. In 1988, the ship was located and significant amounts of the Gold Recovered. Today we are Proud to offer you the first SS Central America coin we have ever offered. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation

***Auction Highlight*** 1853-p Arrows & Rays Very Original Seated Half Dollar 50c Graded GEM Unc By

Lot # 470 (Sale Order: 457 of 529)

***Auction Highlight*** 1853-p Arrows & Rays Very Original Seated Half Dollar 50c Graded GEM Unc By USCG. Much has been written in the past about the alleged rarit...morey of the Arrows and Rays Seated half dollar type in Mint State, only some of which is true. Both the 1853 and 1853-O certainly command a premium in the numismatic market -- a situation that we feel is justified because the type collector needs to acquire an example of one of those two issues in order to complete their set. Most collectors gravitate toward the 1853-P because the 1853-O is much, much scarcer in circulated grades and genuinely rare in Mint State. The 1853 Philadelphia, however, is not rare in Mint State, only borderline scarce, and examples are offered frequently enough that the average collector should be able to acquire one within any given year of numismatic trading. There is one area in which the 1853 Arrows and Rays half is genuinely rare, however, and that is in properly graded, fully original Gem Mint State. So many Uncirculated examples (in all grades) that pass through our hands have been dipped or otherwise "conserved," making it extremely difficult to locate a fresh, original piece. This is just such a coin, the surfaces veiled in beautiful silver-orange patina that probably points to years of storage in a paper envelope. The color brightens markedly at direct angles, bringing vivid pinkish-apricot iridescence into view. Satiny luster remains as vibrant as the day the coin was struck, and the surfaces have survived the passage of time without acquiring any grade limiting abrasions. A PQ offering for the quality conscious type collector or advanced Seated half dollar specialist. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
