The 1953 $5 silver certificate looks very similar to the earlier 1934 issues except that the “5” on the left hand side of the note is in blue, and the seal on the right hand side is smaller. All 1953 blue seal silver certificates feature a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. There is a blue seal on the right hand side of the bill. The serial number is also in blue writing. No 1953 five dollar silver certificate says In God We Trust. The following writing is on each note: “Silver Certificate This Certifies That There Is On Deposit In The Treasury Of The United States Of America Five Dollars In Silver Payable To The Bearer On Demand” “This Certificate Is Legal Tender For All Debts Public And Private” All 1953 blue seals were printed in Washington DC.

Wow! Covered End Roll! Marked "Peace Limited"! X10 Coins Inside! (FC)

Lot # 3192 (Sale Order: 1930 of 3469)

Wow! Covered End Roll! Marked "Peace Limited"! X10 Coins Inside! (FC). Up for auction is a (10 coin roll marked “Peace Limited” and having two covered ends and wei...moreghing 267.8g), one roll amongst the 2700+ roll hoard which after seeing it can only be described as the Long Island Vault Hoard. Inside the vault are hundreds upon hundreds of dollar rolls. Some are 10 coin rolls some are 20, most are hand marked as to what’s inside and most have covered ends. We have opened about 20 of the rolls and have not found any that were mismarked. The vault at one point I believe had the rolls separated into three sections. The markings standard, premium, limited were marked on the sections. Additionally there was a small safe inside the vault marked “Reserve”. But when we first the saw the hoard, the sections were empty as was the small safe. It appeared that at some point the rolls were all put into canvas bank bags, which bags were all lying on the floor of the vault. The agreement with for the Consignee is that we wire on Friday their portion of the funds for any rolls paid that week and on Mondays we will send our runner up to Long Island to retrieve the rolls for shipment that week from our offices as well as photographing the rolls for the next weeks auction. We hope you enjoy these rolls as much as we have bringing them to you.

1961 Soviet Russian Denomination Set, 5 Notes, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50 Rubles Grades

Lot # 3213 (Sale Order: 1938 of 3469)

1961 Soviet Russian Denomination Set, 5 Notes, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50 Rubles Grades. The "Sixth Soviet Ruble" was issued first in 1961, and the designs for both the non-...morecommemorative coins and paper currency of the Soviet Union almost remained identical from 1961 nearly until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Briefly before the Soviet Union fell, there was the monetary reform of 1991 and the release of the Seventh Soviet Ruble, with designs that were fairly similar to the 1961 Rubles. Interestingly, the 500 Ruble note only existed for 2 days before the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the 1000 Soviet Ruble note only came into existence 3 months after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some Soviet banknotes were printed and remained in use in various ex-Soviet states in 1992-1993, still utilizing the 1991 Soviet designs.

Group of 5 Early 1900's German Hyperinflation Notes WWI

Lot # 3235 (Sale Order: 1949 of 3469)

Group of 5 Early 1900's German Hyperinflation Notes WWI. hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic, economic disaster in the Weimar Republic in 1922–23 that impoverish...moreed millions of German citizens.During World War I, prices in Germany had doubled, but that was just the start of the country’s economic troubles. The new German Weimar government was bound by the Treaty of Versailles, which was designed to ensure that the grandees of the now defunct German Empire could never wage war on their neighbours again. The treaty’s terms put the Weimar government under significant financial pressure, such that it was unlikely that the ailing German economy would recover. The huge amount the Germans had to pay the Allies in reparation for the war meant they couldn’t afford to buy imported goods, and the loss of their colonies meant they couldn’t rely on cheap raw materials. At the same time, billions of marks hoarded during the war suddenly came back into circulation. The rising cost of goods combined with a dramatic increase in the money supply created perfect conditions for inflation. Before World War I, the exchange rate was just over four marks to the U.S. dollar. By 1920 the value of the mark was 16 times less. It stabilized at 69 marks to the dollar for some months. The Weimar government was still in a position to get a grip on the economy; instead, it chose to print yet more money in order to pay the reparation debt. By July 1922 prices had risen by some 700 percent, and hyperinflation had arrived. The government had to print million-mark notes, then billion-mark notes. By November 1923 one U.S. dollar was equivalent to 1,000 billion (a trillion) marks. A wheelbarrow full of money couldn’t buy a newspaper. Shopkeepers couldn’t replenish their stock fast enough to keep up with prices, farmers refused to sell their produce for worthless money, food riots broke out, and townspeople marched into the countryside to loot the farms. Law and order broke down. The German attempt at democracy had been completely undermined. Conspiracy theories sprouted, and extremist political views became acceptable. Ultimately, hyperinflation enabled Adolf Hitler to gain power.A new currency, the Rentenmark was introduced in August 1924, backed by the U.S. gold reserve, and realistic reparation payments were agreed to. Although economic mismanagement on the part of the Weimar government is usually blamed for causing hyperinflation, evidence suggests that speculators were also responsible: they started “short selling,” effectively betting on the value of the mark dropping.
