2006 Sealed Ben Franklin Coin & Chronicles Set

Lot # 5458 (Sale Order: 3284 of 3469)

2006 Sealed Ben Franklin Coin & Chronicles Set. The Franklin Set that Struck Collectors Like Lightning! The 2006 Scientist Coin & Chronicle Collection!Benjamin Fra...morenklin is truly one of our nation’s greatest founding fathers. He was a man of many hats, excelling in each of his roles for our fledgling nation in a near impossible feat of intellect. When looking at the collective results of his life’s work as a Printer, Postmaster, and Statesman; it is ironic that one of his least famous roles, that of a scientist, was the one that every single American imagines when they think of him!On this very day, more than 267 years ago, Benjamin Franklin famously flies a kite during a thunderstorm that is then struck by lightning! By tying a key around the string, he was able to collect the charge in a Leyden jar and once and for all prove his notion of the “electrical nature of lightning”. In honor of this historic anniversary we decided to bring back one of the rarest Benjamin Franklin collections that honors his work as a Scientist: the 2006 Coin and Chronicle collection!Did you know? Ben Franklin has invented several of the words we use today! ‘Battery’, ‘Conductor’, and ‘Electrician’ were all his creations! He also well known for inventing something that has saved all of us from quite a shock at one point or another in our lives--- the Lightning Rod!A Special Release on his 300th AnniversaryThe special release in 2006 of the Benjamin Franklin Silver Dollars came in commemoration of the tercentenary of the birth of one of our nation’s most influential founding fathers: Benjamin Franklin. What was unique about this release was that the fact that two differently designed silver dollars was to be minted with a total mintage of no more than 250,000 each. The first of the two coins to be produced was known as the 2006 “scientist” silver dollar and displayed a young version of Benjamin Franklin; the second silver dollar minted the same year featuring an older image of Benjamin Franklin gained the moniker “The founding father” silver dollar. The Ultimate Franklin Collector’s SetAlongside these silver dollars the U.S. Mint also produced a 2006 Benjamin Franklin Coin and Chronicles Set. Each of these sets includes the uncirculated version of the “Scientist” Silver Dollar from the United States Mint, a set of four postage stamps released in 2006 to commemorate each of the integral roles he played for the fledgling United States of America (Printer, Scientist, Diplomat, and Postmaster General) from the United States Postal Service; Alongside the coins and stamps this set also includes an intaglio print honoring Franklin’s role in signing the Declaration of Independence from the Bureau of Engraving and printing, as well as a reproduction of his iconic printed work “Poor Richard’s Almanack” from the U.S. Government Printing Office. This set is any collector or Benjamin Franklin lover’s dream. You not only get the extremely sought after 2006 Benjamin Franklin “Scientist” Silver Dollar in Uncirculated Condition, but you also get 6 other highly collectible pieces from 3 separate Government agencies all honoring the great man and legacy that was Benjamin Franklin.

Lot # 5469 (Sale Order: 3289 of 3469)

1865 US Fractional Currency 3c Third Issue fr-1226 Washingon Light Background Fr-1226 Grades vf details. Fractional or postage currency has a rich history. At the ...morebeginning of the Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. High Value - Mixed Covered End Roll - Marked "Morgan/Peace Reserve" - Weight shows x10 Coins (FC)

Lot # 5472 (Sale Order: 3292 of 3469)

High Value - Mixed Covered End Roll - Marked "Morgan/Peace Reserve" - Weight shows x10 Coins (FC). Up for auction is a (10 coin roll marked “Morgan/Peace Reserve” ...moreand having two covered ends and weighing 268.5g), one roll amongst the 2700+ roll hoard which after seeing it can only be described as the Long Island Vault Hoard. Inside the vault are hundreds upon hundreds of dollar rolls. Some are 10 coin rolls some are 20, most are hand marked as to what’s inside and most have covered ends. We have opened about 20 of the rolls and have not found any that were mismarked. The vault at one point I believe had the rolls separated into three sections. The markings standard, premium, limited were marked on the sections. Additionally there was a small safe inside the vault marked “Reserve”. But when we first the saw the hoard, the sections were empty as was the small safe. It appeared that at some point the rolls were all put into canvas bank bags, which bags were all lying on the floor of the vault. The agreement with for the Consignee is that we wire on Friday their portion of the funds for any rolls paid that week and on Mondays we will send our runner up to Long Island to retrieve the rolls for shipment that week from our offices as well as photographing the rolls for the next weeks auction. We hope you enjoy these rolls as much as we have bringing them to you.

Group of 3 United States Special Mint Set in Original Government Packaging! From 1965-1967 with 15 C

Lot # 5475 (Sale Order: 3294 of 3469)

Group of 3 United States Special Mint Set in Original Government Packaging! From 1965-1967 with 15 Coins Inside!. In response to a nationwide shortage of coinage, ...morethe Treasury Department announced that no proof set or mint sets would be produced for collectors. In their place, so-called Special Mint Sets were issued featuring examples of each denomination carrying a finish superior to the standard circulation strikes, but not up the quality of proof coinage. Starting with 1965 Special Mint Set, each of the set contained the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln Cent. The standard composition of the traditionally silver coins was changed starting this year. Rather than the previous 90% purity, the half dollar was struck in 40% silver. The five coins of the set were produced at the San Francisco Mint, although as with all coinage issued for this year mint marks were not used. Packaging for 1965 consisted of the five coins and a blue mint token sealed in a single plastic cellophane wrap. This was protected between two pieces of cardboard and placed within a white envelope with a notation of the contents. For 1966-1967, rather than the previous cellophane and white envelopes, the coins were mounted within a rigid plastic holder with a blue background. This holder was placed within an outer blue cardboard box. Special mint set coins typically have a uniformly brilliant or proof like finish. A minority of examples will display cameo contrast with design elements frosted against a proof like background. These cameo or deep cameo examples are prized by collectors and command premiums.
