1971 United States Mint Set in Original Government Packaging

Lot # 46 (Sale Order: 36 of 1370)

1971 United States Mint Set in Original Government Packaging. Each 1971 Mint Set included a total of eleven different coins, an increase of one coin compared to th...moree prior year. This added coin was issued since the Kennedy Half Dollar was struck at two different mint facilities that year. Notably, this was the first year that the denomination was struck in copper nickel clad composition, after having been struck in 40% silver from 1965 to 1970. The coins of the annual mint set were the P-D-S Lincoln Cent, P-D Jefferson Nickel, P-D Roosevelt Dime, P-D Washington Quarter, and P-D Kennedy Half. The coins were packaged similarly in two cellophane packs with colored stripes, red for Denver and blue for Philadelphia and San Francisco. The packs were placed between two cardboard inserts and put into a white envelope marked “1971-U.C.” with Treasury Department return address.

*Star Note* 1953A $2 Red Seal United States Note Grades vf++

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 39 of 1370)

*Star Note* 1953A $2 Red Seal United States Note Grades vf++. 1953 red print two dollar bills can be broken up into four different types by signature combination. ...more 1953 two dollar bills feature Thomas Jefferson as the central figure. The back of the bill shows Monticello. These were printed in Washington DC and circulated across the country. They have red overprints and a red seal on the right hand side of the bill. You can find the following phrases on the bill, “Two Dollars, United States Note, The United States of America will pay to the bearer on demand Two Dollars” “This note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private”. When notes are discovered that have been printed incorrectly (such as having the serial numbers upside down, etc.) the misprinted "error notes" are replaced with star notes because no two bills within a certain series can be produced with the same serial number. They are used to maintain a correct count of notes in a serial number run. By their nature, star notes are more scarce than notes with standard serial numbers and as such are widely collected by numismatists. Some of the highest prices paid for modern (post-1928) U.S. banknotes have been for star notes.
