1883 n/c "Racketeer Nickel" Liberty Nickel 5c Grades xf

Lot # 38 (Sale Order: 32 of 1858)

1883 n/c "Racketeer Nickel" Liberty Nickel 5c Grades xf. the racketeer nickel was developed after the U.S. mint issued the Liberty nickel in 1883. On one side it h...moread the head of Liberty. On the obverse, it simply had the Roman numeral V and nowhere did it spell out its value as 5 cents. As it so happened, the nickel was close in size to the $5 gold piece, which had a similar design. So, as the story goes, a man named Josh Tatum began gold-plating the nickels and passing them off as $5 gold coins, for instance buying a 5-cent cigar then placing the coin on the counter and getting $4.95 in change. When he was finally caught, he was exonerated since he was unable to speak, and thus never actually misrepresented the currency.

The quality of the coins found in 1978 Proof Sets is generally excellent. Nearly all coins encountered will have deep cameo finishes. Some 1978 Proof coins have received perfect grades of PR70DCAM or PF 70 Ultra Cameo from PCGS or NGC. The 1979 Proof Set saw the debut of the new design and size for the one dollar coin. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was sized slightly larger than the quarter. the obverse of the coin featured the woman’s suffrage figure’s portrait and the reverse carried over the prior design from the Eisenhower Dollar on a smaller canvas. The 1979 proof coins contained in the sets carry two different styles of mint marks, known as Type 1 or Type 2. Type 1 mint marks have the area inside the letter filled, while Type 2 mint marks are clear and flat on top. The rarity of the Type 2 version varies by denomination, with the Susan B. Anthony Dollar being the rarest and carrying the highest premium, trending pr69 $65. The packaging for the 1979 Proof Set remained unchanged from the prior year with one exception. A round plastic ring was fitted into the large slot reserved for the dollar coin to accommodate the denomination’s new size. The packaging would be redesigned in the following year, specifically for the small size dollar.
