Lot # 4      

Smooth rifle that has "M.Sheetz" signed on the lockplate. Attributed to Michael Sheetz of the famed Sheetz family of gunsmiths of Virginia (now WV). Good chance that Michael Sheetz built the lock himself. Ocatgon to Round Barrel, which may have been imported in the period. Walnut stock. Fine sideplate and a muzzle band of brass. Converted to Percussion lock. Minor wood repair at the toeplate. Overall length of 55 1/2" and 5.80 lbs. C. 1800

C. 1850 Percussion OH Longrifle by J. Vincent

Lot # 8      

Rifle built by John Vincent of the famous riflemaking Vincent family of Ohio. Overall length of 52 1/2" with a weight of 9.28 lbs. Original surafce and Percussion lock on rifle. Barrel is .36 caliber. Finely engraved full patchbox and sideplate, paired with a pewter nose cap. Period wood repair along tang. A beautiful example of an Ohio Longrifle built in C. 1850. This rifle is what is known as "half-stock."

Rare "Mule Ear" ignition system. .48 Rifled Barrel with an overall length of 58 1/2" and weighing in at 8.88 lbs. Built by Pennsylvania Longrifle builder, Levi Kaup of the Susquehanna School of Gunmakers. Fine patina on surface with an exceptionally curly stock. Ornately decorated with 26 silver inlays, which includes an engraved moon on the cheek and multiple brass inlays. Brass saddle plate on forestock belly. Original ramrod with "Candy-Cane" striping. The original cleaning jag is still in the patchbox. The Patchbox is wonderfully engraved on the lid. Minor crack repaired on forestock. C. 1840

Rifle appears to be made by an apprentice of Schreckengost gunsmith, due to similarity in style. Full stock rifle, which has very nice condition. Checkered wrist with a brass sadle plate on the bottom. Interesting side plate. Some engraving present at the front sight. Capture lid patchbox. Overall length of 57 1/2" with a weight of 8.34 lbs. Barrel is rifled and .37 calbier.

C. 1815 Flintlock Lehigh School PA Longrifle by Henry Hunsiker

Lot # 18      

Pennsylvania Longrifle from the famous Lehigh/Allentown School marked "H.H" on the barrel, for Henry Hunsiker. Hunsiker rifles are fairly rare in comparison to other makers from the School. 10 brass inlays decorate the maple stock, paired with a finely engraved patchbox, toeplate, and sideplate. Sideplate is a classic example of the Lehigh/Allentown School, which commonly has an "arrowhead" at the rear of it. Thumb piece on wrist, which also has checkering. Masterfully engraved "hunter's star" on the cheek. Barrel has been re-browned and restoration work has been done to rear bow of triggerguard. Overall length of 65" with a smoothbore octagon-to-round barrel at .48 cal.

An example of the well-known, "Iron-mounted Southern Mountain rifle" of Tennessee. Patchbox is the "cigar box" style. Beautifully stocked of walnut, with small piece of wood missing in sideplate area and ahead of the lock. Small crack on forestock. Barrel has been shortened from the muzzle and breech in period. Sights have been replaced over time as well. 58 1/2" long and a weight of 10.38 lbs.
