In our October 2022 Premier Auction, Lewis & Grant is proud to present a once-in-a-lifetime
sale of historical artifacts and collectibles, many of which have been featured in numerous historical exhibitions and institutions. Headlining the sale are selections from the General Samuel Houston Collection, victor of the Battle of San Jacinto and first President of the Republic of Texas. These lots include not only artifacts from his early military career including a militia officers chapeau (Lot 72), his field desk (Lot 79), and saddle pad (Lot 77), but also the sword belt (Lot 75), silver spurs (Lot 78) and presentation saber (Lot 74) worn by Houston at San Jacinto. Another artifact from the Battle of San Jacinto, a Mexican General Officer’s Coat attributed to Santa Anna (Lot 91) comes from the collection of James Sylvester, the only color-bearer at the battle as well as the soldier credited with Santa Anna’s capture. Massachusetts-Marked U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 429)      

.45-70 caliber, 32.5" barrel, S/N 73937. Arsenal reblued barrel with case hardened lock and full-length walnut stock with two barrel bands. Blade front sight with Model 1873 elevator rear sight. Barrel marked with "V/P/[eagle]/p" proofsChamber marked "MASS", with breechblock marked "U.S./MODEL/1873". Three-click tumbler. Stock marked forward of buttplate "6/42". Counterpane marked with script "JSA/1898" cartouche, likely so-marked during arsenal refinishing for sale to Massachusetts Militia at the onset of the Spanish-American War.

**Fine condition. Barrel retains nearly all of its blued finish with some dulling of case hardening. Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes retaining an attractive red color. Bore is bright and shiny.**

***Finnish-Marked French Chauchat Light Machinegun

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 429)      

8mm caliber, 22" barrel, S/N 21658. Lower and upper receivers match as does bolt handle. Blued finish. Blade front sight with elevator rear sight. Receiver marked with CSRG star stamp as well as Finnish "SA". Includes accessories including anti-aircraft sights, magazine loader, and Finnish cleaning kit. This example is one of the over 5,000 surplus machineguns sent to Finland by France during the Winter War of November 1939 to March 1940.

**Good condition. Deactivated via a barrel plug welded to bolt face. Upper receiver appears to have been reblued. Some handling marks and blemishes. This machinegun is Currently on an ATF Form 5, and is fully transferrable if the buyer wishes to reconvert it to an operating machinegun.**

**U.S. Model 1922 Springfield Rifle

.22 caliber, 24" barrel, S/N 1789. Barrel marked "SA/[flaming bomb]" with "12/22" date. Lyman 48 rear receiver sight. Blue finish, walnut stock with no finger grooves, sling swivels, checkered metal butt plate. 

**This is without a doubt one of the best 1922's we have had the opportunity to sell. The barrel and action retains all the original blue finish. The triggerguard and floor plate retain all the blue finish, as well as the magazine. The butt plate retains nearly all the blue finish, with some wear to the high edges. The stock has that nice feathered look. The bore is bright and shiny, mirror.  Overall this is an outstanding 1922 rifle.**

.30 Carbine caliber, 18" barrel, S/N 1511791. Parkerized finish with low-wood stock. Blade front sight with Type II rear sight. Barrel marked "UNDERWOOD/6-43/[flaming bomb]". Receiver marked with two-line "NATIONAL/POSTAL METER"  over serial number. Sling well shows flaming bomb with partially illegible inspector stamp. Fitted with late barrel band and switch-type safety. Includes bayonet, magazine, and reproduction magazine pouch.

**Good condition overall. Most of the parkerized finish has worn to a dull plumb patination with stock showing some handing marks and blemishes. Bore is bright with some grime in lands, visible edges to rifling.**

Counterpane marked with Rock Island rebuild cartouche.

**Very good condition. Some handling marks and blemishes to finish with some evidence of refinishing to stock. Bore is mirror bright.**

**Rare WWII J.P. Sauer & Sohn German Luftwaffe M30 Drilling

Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 429)      

12 gauge/9.3x74mmR caliber, 25.75" barrel, S/N 337606. Blued barrels with case hardened frame, triggerguard, and grip cap. Checkered walnut stock and forend with raised cheekpiece. Blade front sight with matted rim and mechanical rear sight. Frame marked "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL". Engraved throughout with scrolls. Luftwaffe eagle on right side of stock. Comes in original metal case with two boxes of ammunition, cleaning supplies, sling, users manual, and test target. Fitted with Pachmayr recoil pad.

Issued to aircrews as a survival weapon, the M30 Drilling was primarily issued during the North African campaign, where it was feared that local animals could threaten downed crews who had crash-landed. Mostly procured in 1941 and 1942, the M30 was extremely expensive, and only around 2,500 were actually acquired by the Luftwaffe.

**Very good condition overall. Some minor scratches and wear to finish with attractive bright case coloring on frame. Stock has some handling marks and blemishes. Fitted with Pachmayr recoil pad, for which the stock has been cut to a length of pull of 13.75". Actions are tight and functional with bright bores.**

**Good condition overall. Nearly all of the original finish remains with some thinning on sharp edges and working parts. Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes. Bore is mostly bright with worn rifling.**

25 bore, 12" barrel, NSN. Bright finish with full walnut stock. Brass ramrod top, pipe, sideplate, triggerguard, and buttcap. Steel belt hook. Flat lockplate with swan-neck cock and round integral iron pan. Lockplate marked "TOWER" rear of cock with "[crown]/GR" to the fore. Lockplate additional marked with "[crown]/[broad arrow]" acceptance marking. Matching mating marks on lockplate and hammer. Barrel tang marked "1740". Stock shows acceptance marks throughout with one dated 1800. Barrel shows acceptance mark and proof.

**Good condition as-is. Steel parts have been cleaned and polished in the European manner with the brass parts showing a dull luster. Cock may be a replacement. Jaw screw with some stripping and damage. Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes as well as some wood filler on the right side of grip just above buttcap. Action is functional with bore showing some rust staining and evidence of deep cleaning.**

British Model 1756/77 Sea Service Pistol

28 bore, 12.25" barrel, NSN. Bright finish with full walnut stock. Brass ramrod tip, ramrod pipe, sideplate, triggerguard, and buttcap. Steel belt hook. Flat lockplate with reinforced cock, round integral pan, and bridled frizzen. Lockplate marked "TOWER" rear of cock with "[crown]/GR" and "[crown]/[broad arrow]" along with fine line engravings.  Interior of lockplate marked with "[crown]/2" with matching mating marks to belt hook. Stock shows acceptance markings including "[crown]/1800" and "[crown]/2", with barrel showing additional British proofs and acceptance marks.

**Very good condition. Barrels have a pewter patination with some scattered oxidation. Stock has some handling marks and blemishes with ramrod tip being glued on. Brass has a dull luster. Lock is functional.**

Faceted iron pan with fence and bridle. Iron mountings. Lockplate marked "Charleville". Breech tang marked "1753". Barrel shows "N", "RN" and "U" proof marks. Ramrod shows acceptance marking.

**Good condition overall.  Some salt and pepper patination with some old oil staining and cleaned pitting. Markings somewhat worn. Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes with some original varnish remaining. Butt proud of stock. Action is functional with bore showing some old darkening. Appears to be in the original flint configuration.**

13 bore, 9" barrel, NSN. Bright finish with added brass forend cap, iron triggerguard, sideplate, and butt. Flat beveled lockplate with flat reinforced hammer and faceted iron pan with fence. Lockplate marked " Mre de Libreville". Counterpane shows old worn marking.

**Good condition overall. Barrel has a dark patination with some old pitting. Some dulling of bass with lockplate showing some signs of prior cleaning. Stock in good condition some some old minor splits forward of lockplate. Action does not hold at half or full cock. Ramrod is an old replacement.**

Early American Flintlock Pistol

Lot # 39 (Sale Order: 39 of 429)      

12 bore (.72 caliber), 13.75" octagonal to round barrel with two wedding bands, NSN. Bright finish with walnut full stock secured by pins.  Faceted lock with flat swan-ne...moreck cock and rounded iron pan with fence and bridle, fitted with roller. Lockplate marked "PHILADELPHIA". Brass ramrod pipes, sideplate, thumb piece, and buttcap.  The Stock is made of walnut and has nice lines for the period with a short tight curl to the grip.  The barrel has been cleaned long ago and begun to patinate, gray blending to a plum.  Some light pitting.  The lock is mixed with brown patina and gray some brown staining under the pan, behind the hammer on the lock and in the front of the frizzen.  Brass furniture with a nice dark patina.  Stock has had two small pieces of wood added on the left sid of the stock along the barrel channel.  The stock has been varnish over with a dark patina look,  that hides the two pieces of wood nicely.   Overall a nice early pistol.

Rare Ames Revenue Cutter Service Model 1842 Boxlock Pistol

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 40 of 429)      

.54 caliber, 6" barrel, NSN.  Bright finish with walnut stock secured by brass barrel band.  Boxlock-type action with lockplate marked " N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS" and "USR/1843". Barrel correctly marked "JCB/P", indicating inspection by Joseph C Bragg. Hammer and bolster show matching "R" sub-inspector stamps.  Counterpane correctly marked with script "WAT" and "JCB" marks of and Joseph C. Bragg, respectively.

Only 144 pistols were produced by Ames for the "Revenue-Marine" or "Revenue Cutter Service", which would evolve into the modern Coast Guard.

**Very good condition overall. Barrel has some salt and pepper patination with some accompanying old pitting and dents. Some moderate pitting on lockplate which somewhat obscures markings. Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes due to age, but with legible cartouches. Action is functional. A good example for the advanced collector.**

**Good condition overall.  Barrel has a mixed light plumb and pewter patination with even wear on remainder of piece.  Grips have been revarnished and have as a result made the cartouches only faintly visible, if illegible.  Action is tight and functional with a good bore showing some rust frosting and visible edges to rifling.**

.38 caliber, 6" barrel, S/N 101450. Blued finish with two-piece walnut grips. Barrel marked with caliber and two-line Colt address. Butt, arm, cylinder release, and frame show matching numbers, with "1450" penciled on inside left grip, and "2241" on the right. Butt also marked with US military model markings. Left side of frame with "R.A.C." stamp of Rinaldo Carr, as is right grip. Left grip shows somewhat faded "DMT" cartouche of Daniel M. Taylor and "1898" date.

**Fine condition. Most of the original blued finish remains with some holster wear to barrel and thinning on edges and working parts. Grips in good condition with some minor handling blemishes and worn cartouches. Action is thigh and functional with a bright bore.**

**Good condition overall. Some cleaning of finish showing some remnants of needlepoint pitting. Overall mixed blue and gunmetal patination. Some thinning of finish on working pats and sharp edges. Grips show some wear to checkering. Bore is bright with sharp edges. Magazine release needs some work.**

**Ithaca US M1911 Pistol

.45 caliber, 5" Barrel, S/N: 99860. "United States Property" marked with "P", "RIA", "WGP" proof and inspection marks present.

**Overall in very good to excellent condition. Parkerized finish has dulled slightly but is very good with just some light silvering around the edges. Original plastic grips are in almost excellent shape with just a couple of small wear marks on the left grip.**

8X22mm Nambu, 4.61" Barrel, S/N: 31184. Dated 1935, January. Appears to have all matching numbers except magazines. Both Magazines are early period original unmatched and nickel-plated. Comes with a nice original leather clamshell holster with straps, cleaning rod, one extra magazine, and olive drab cotton braided lanyard.

**Very good condition. It retains the majority of the blue finish except for some very light silvering around the edges from wear and wood grips show little to no wear. Holster and lanyard have tight stitching but straps have a few loose threads.**
