In our October 2022 Premier Auction, Lewis & Grant is proud to present a once-in-a-lifetime
sale of historical artifacts and collectibles, many of which have been featured in numerous historical exhibitions and institutions. Headlining the sale are selections from the General Samuel Houston Collection, victor of the Battle of San Jacinto and first President of the Republic of Texas. These lots include not only artifacts from his early military career including a militia officers chapeau (Lot 72), his field desk (Lot 79), and saddle pad (Lot 77), but also the sword belt (Lot 75), silver spurs (Lot 78) and presentation saber (Lot 74) worn by Houston at San Jacinto. Another artifact from the Battle of San Jacinto, a Mexican General Officer’s Coat attributed to Santa Anna (Lot 91) comes from the collection of James Sylvester, the only color-bearer at the battle as well as the soldier credited with Santa Anna’s capture. Mexican Presidential Sash of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna

Lot # 101 (Sale Order: 101 of 429)      

31.5" long, 8.126" wide at widest point. Even .875" red, white, and green silk stripes with silver metallic trim. Back of quilted blue silk with wool batting. Fitted with gilt brass Mexican eagle. Cockade of silk en suite with thin silver bullion trim and enameled pin of Mexican eagle.

**Some wear fading of silk with some pulling of stitching. Back shows moderate wear from use with some exposure of batting. Some loss of enamel on pin with some loosening of trim. A very rare and highly desirable artifact from a well-documented collection of Mexican War artifacts associated with two important historical figures.**

35.75" x 1.75". Red morocco leather construction with black cotton. Embroidered throughout with floral motifs in gold bullion highlighted in sequins. 2.25" x 2.5" brass buckle with Mexican eagle. Matching sword hanger.

**Very good condition overall. Some moth holes exposing muslin lining. Some tarnishing to brass which has taken on a dark bronze coloration and verdigris.**

Mexican Officer's Sword

25.25" spearpoint blade with diamond cross-section,1.625" wide at forte. Brass fittings with wire-wrapped mother of pearl grip. Brass scabbard. Cast clamshell counterguard with Mexican eagle and single recurved quillon. Eagle pommel. Scabbard with floral motifs.

**Blade has a dark untouched patina with even darkening and verdigris throughout guard. Knuckle-bow has broken off. Verdigris on wire with some cracks on grp. Scabbard with dents and some verdigris. Missing hanging ring. Possibly a musician's sword or officer's undress piece.**

Republic of Mexico Officer's Helmet

Steel construction with brass trim and rivets. White leather sweatband with reinforced rear lames. Brass brow band with Mexican eagle device. French-style plume with black horsehair plume. Leather-backed brass chinscales. White feather plume in silver holder adorned with Mexican eagles.

**Good condition overall. Some oxidation and light rust to skull with some loss of finish and dulling to brass. Some wear and damage to liner. Chinstrap in good condition.**

Ornate Mexican Officer's Sword

Lot # 105 (Sale Order: 105 of 429)      

32" spearpoint blade, .75" wide at ricasso. Blade etched throughout with floral adornments and trophies of arms. Skillfully formed and sculpted brass hilt with clamshell counter-guard dramatically displaying a Mexican Republic eagle. Baroque-style motifs throughout including floral adornments to quillon and guard, and cherubs on the pommel. Grip of pearl wrapped in wire. Brass scabbard with chased motifs en suite.

**Very good condition. Blade has a light pewter patination with some minor areas of oxidation. Hilt shows some minor spots of verdigris with good detail remaining. Grip shows some minor loosening of wire and a nearly invisible spot of missing pearl near pommel. Scabbard has moderate wear and dents from age with a split area near tip. Sword knot may be a later association**

**Good condition. Leather is soft and pliable with some pulling of stitching and fraying of edges. Some loss of wire to bullion. Some repairs evident.**

Pair of Composite European Flintlock Pistols

Lot # 107 (Sale Order: 107 of 429)      

22 bore, 12.25" smooth fluted to round barrels with wedding bands. Varnished wood full stocks with European-style molding. Gilt brass faceted ramrod pipe, entry pipe, triggerguard, buttcap, sideplate, and tumbpieces. Triggerguard and entry pipes chiseled with floral motifs, buttcap with long langlets in a geometric form, with sideplate depicting angels. Replaced brass lockplate with flat swan-neck cock and faceted brass pan. Steel frizzen without bridle. Barrels marked "LAZARINO COMINAZZO", likely spurious.

**Fair to good condition as-is. Barrel has a light pewter patination with some scattered oxidation. Some moderate wear to gilt finish with some bronzing. Lockplates are mostly bright. Stocks show some minor sections of replaced wood along ramrod channels with some additional old stable splits around barrel pins. Action is functional.**

Peter Knecht Mexican Formal Dress Sword with Scabbard

31.5" spearpoint blade with near full-length fuller. Blade with fire blue and gilt finish. Engraved with wreaths and panoplies of arms. Marked in script " Solingen" on obverse forte with " P. Knecht" on reverse. Court-style hilt with clamshell guard depicting Mexican eagle flanked by cornucopias. Reeded wood grip with baroque-style guard, pommel depicting a bust in classical armor with phrygian cap. Brass guard with chased details.

**Good condition overall. Some oxidation to blade with attractive bluing and gilt remaining on blade. Some tarnishing to brass and verdigris in low areas. Scabbard has some dulling and staining to brass in addition to some dents.**

Mexican Officer's Sword Attributed to Colonel Francisco Duque

35" quillback blade with 11" false edge, 1.125" wide at forte. Blade etched with floral scrolls and panoplies of arms with a Mexican eagle on the obverse. Ornate three-branch brass guard with recurved quillon. Guard with large panel of Mexican eagle and French maker's stamp. Silvered metal grip with wire wrap. Iron scabbard with gilt brass mounts.

**Good condition overall. Blade retains some brightness with some areas of oxidation and a minor patch of rust scaling. Some minor imperfections to cutting edge. Guard has an even dark patination with grip and wire remaining in good condition. Scabbard shows some loss of finish and minor dents.**

Mexican Mounted Officer's Helmet

Lot # 110 (Sale Order: 110 of 429)      

Steel construction with silver plated finish with brass trim. Nine-finger leather liner and integral sweatband with "7" size label. Cast brass crest with brass front plate consisting of a Mexican eagle surmounted by a crown. Brass crest with black hair comb. Leather-backed chinscales with flower rosettes. Fitted with Mexican tricolor hackle in a brass mount.

This helmet was displayed in the ?Battle for Texas: The Experience?, exhibit in San Antonio Texas, and was attributed to Lieutenant Santiago Tapia. After the Battle of the Alamo in February, 1836, Tapia was ordered to return to Mexico City with news of Santa Anna's victory. He spent his life in service to Mexico, commanding troops in the French Invasion of Veracuz (1838-1839), Mexican American War (1846-1848) and the Second French Intervention (1861-1867). He died of typhus in 1866.

**Fair to good condition overall. Metal has some moderate tarnish with some minor dents and scrapes. Brass parts have varied levels of patination with some evidence of cleaning and replaced parts, likely for museum display. Chinstrap is broken. Leather liner is intact with some degradation and loss of finish.**

Mexican Dragoon Officer's Uniform

Lot # 111 (Sale Order: 111 of 429)      

Four-piece red wool construction with quilted chest and silk sleeve lining. Green cuff and collar facing with silver bullion collar embroidery. Coattails with embroidered turn backs depicting sabers, arrow quivers, and liberty cap. Front with ten 22mm coat-size cast "REPUBLICA MEXICANA" buttons, with an additional ten on tails. Functional cuffs secured with four 14mm buttons. Nineteen coat buttons show "LEDSAM AND SONS LONDON" backmarks, with cuff buttons devoid of backmarks. Machine-stitched buttonholes with hand stitching in lining, collar, and other detailed areas.

This uniform was displayed in the ?Battle for Texas: The Experience?, exhibit in San Antonio Texas, and was attributed to Lieutenant Santiago Tapia, the officer who was assigned to return to Mexico City after the Battle of the Alamo and bring news of the Mexican victory. This lot includes accessories from the Santiago display, including Lieutenant's epaulettes, Morocco leather sword belt, sash, crossbelt, moleskin trousers, and boots. 

**Fine condition. Some minor moth holes to body with lining intact. Some small areas of repair, including reattached buttons and reinforced stitching, likely museum conservation work. Bullion is in excellent condition with only some minor areas of missing wire. Accessories in good condition. Very likely a coat worn later in the career of Tapia, who ended his service as a General.**

Early Republic of Mexican Saddle with Cover

Lot # 113 (Sale Order: 113 of 429)      

Rawhide covered wooden tree with 16.75" seat and 17.75" wide cantle. Long 9.5" leather-wrapped horn with 4.5" head inset with white metal Mexican eagle with "REPUBLICA MEXICANA EJERCITO NATIONALE". Wooden stirrups with tooled tapaderos adorned with leacher conchos. Integral pad with hair batting.  Fitted with elaborately tooled leather mohilla.

**Very good condition overall. Some shrinking of rawhide on tree with some drying of exposed wood. Pad has worn through in some places under tree exposing hair stuffing.some wear to edges of pat from age and use with some scattered scuffing and repairs to leather. A few missing tacks. Mohilla is in good condition but is moderately dry with some scratches and wear to edges. A unique Mexican military saddle which is rarely seen on the market.**

**Good condition. Barrel shows some wear to repainted finish. Sock shows some handling marks and blemishes including some old cracks and minor splits around screws. Moderate rust scaling on lock.**

51.75" octagonal to round barrel with wedding band, NSN. Blued finish with walnut full stock secured with pins. Blade front sight with rear sight block. Stock of "Roman nose" type with patchbox secured by button. Brass nose cap, ramrod pipes, entry pipe, sideplate, triggerguard, and buttplate. Flat stepped lock with faceted swan-neck cock. Iron fenced pan with roller frizzen. Top of barrel marked "WORLY".

While the exact maker this rifle cannot be identified several Worley-surnamed gunsmiths appear around Wyomissing, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

**Very good condition overall. Finish has an even dark plumb patination with some old dents and oxidation from use. Stock is in good condition with some minor splits around screws and along barrel channel. Action is non-functional with poorly fitting lockplate screws.**

Appears to be a conversion from flintlock.

**Good condition. Barrel has a deep untouched plumb patina with lockplate matching. Some rough pitting around primer. Some sections of missing wood around barrel with some additional minor missing wood around breech from age. Action is not functional, and bore shows some darkening.**

Brass buttplate and toe piece. Well-formed patchbox with engravings and button latch. Some darkening to lockplate with hammer likely replaced. Lockplate marked "PW" in script. **Very good condition. Most of the original blued finish remains with some overall thinning and wear to sharp edges. Some oxidation to steel parts with some lacquer staining on brass. Stock shows some minor handling blemishes. Action is tight and functional with a good bore showing strong rifling.**

Good Adolph Jansen Belgian Pinfire Double Rifle

Approximately 12 bore, 28.5" barrels, S/N 488. Damascus barrels show rifling at muzzle for ball cartridges. Top of barrel marked "AD. JANSEN ARQUEBUSIER DU ROI A BRUXELLES". Splinter-type forend with barrel key and swivel lever. Checkered walnut forend with checkered wrist and carved cheekpiece. Iron triggerguard en suite with carved horn. Frame, fencers, and back-action lockplates finely chiseled with floral motifs and panels of hunting dogs. Lockplates marked "AD JANSEN ARQR DU ROI" and "AD JANSEN A BRUXELLES". Barrels with both German and Belgian proofs.

12 gauge, 30" barrels, S/N RE64218 (ca. 1924). Length of pull 14", drop at heel 1.25". Full and modified chokes with 2.75" chambers. Refurbished finish including blued barrels and case hardened locks. Finely checkered and detailed walnut stock. White front and mid-beads with vented and matted rib. Barrens and frame engraved with fine banknote style engravings and panels of hunting dogs enhanced with floral borders. Single trigger with thumb safety and ejectors.

**L.C. Smith Crown Grade Sidelock Side by Side Shotgun

Lot # 125 (Sale Order: 125 of 429)      

12 gauge, 30" barrels, S/N 219409. Reblued finish with case hardened sidelock frame. Fine walnut stock with checkered grip and beavertail forend with banjo-style release. Length of pull 13.5", drop at heel 3". Matted rib with white fore and mid-beads.

Crown grade engravings with "LC SMITH CROWN GRADE" on right barrel and Hunter Arms Company markings on left barrel. Gold band on rib with barrels showing Belgian scrolls on breeches, fences, and throughout the piece as a background. Engraved screw heads with gold crown inlaid on lever. Underside of frame shows attractive bouquet and scroll engraving. Sidelocks with panels of hunting dogs in a woodland scene.

**Very good condition. Refinishing was undertaken by an expert, as is often found with reworked Smith shotguns. Minimal wear to finish with some visible case hardening remaining on frame. Stock is in fine condition with only minor handling marks. Action is tight and functional with a fine bore. An excellent example by a famous sporting arms maker anyone would be proud to own.**
