Schuyler Harley & Graham Springfield Sporting Rifle
Lot # 135 (Sale Order: 135 of 429)
In 1878, seeking to divest itself of its surplus arms, Springfield Armory sold a number of pieces to the New York firm of Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham. This particular piece was originally a Model 1873 carbine shipped to Rock Island for issuing to the 2, 3 and 7th Cavalry, and then more than likely issued to the 7th Cavalry, as it falls within the "Custer Range" of carbines used by that regiment. As it was returned to Springfield Arsenal, it was likely considered unserviceable. In 1877 the Springfield Arsenal sold a lot of surplus weapons and parts to Schuyler Hartley & Graham, then SH&G took the parts and turned them into Sporting Rifles and sold them retail from 1878-1890.
