Rare Early U.S. Model 1794 Contract Flintlock Musket

Lot # 5 (Sale Order: 5 of 248)

.69 caliber, 44.5" barrel length. The barrel is marked with a US in the center just forward of the tang and a deeply struck P over an eagle head in a sunken oval in the r...moreear left quadrant. The underside of the barrel is marked with a large block letter “S”, a faint “SK”, and both the barrel and breech plug have the numeral “15”. "SK" is thought to be the marker’s mark of Samuel Kerlin, who provided 906 barrels to the Schuylkill Arsenal between 1794 and 1800. (NOTE: The primary sub-assembly mark on this musket is the numeral “15” which has the top serif of the 5 broken off. All references to that numeral will have that characteristic.) The exterior of the lock is stamped "UNITED STATES" in a slight two line arc to the rear of the cock. The interior of the lock is marked "KETLAND" and has the numeral “15” stamped at the rear point. The interior of the cock has a deeply struck numeral 6 or 9. The forward side screw is original and marked with the numeral “15”. The rear lock screw, while hand-made and of the period, is unmarked and has a smaller head than the other; possibly a period replacement. The three barrel bands are all marked with a large letter "D" and the numeral "15"; the middle band has the numeral on the exterior on the top of the band. The left flat of the stock is marked just to the rear of the side plate with a large, deeply struck "V" and a small "X" above it. Below this mark are the inspectors initials "MW" (these are thought to stand for Marine T. Wickham). Just to the rear of the trigger guard are stamped the initials G.C (These are thought to stand for Gottlieb Clayman, who is known to have provided 1643 stocks to the Schuykill Arsenal between 1794 and 1800.) The unmarked ramrod, which may not be original to the piece, is nonetheless very well made, perhaps of arsenal origin, and probably a period (Circa 1805-1810) replacement; it has a threaded end. Close examination of this well-made musket gives ample evidence of the hand-crafted nature of the way these muskets were made and assembled. **This is one of the rare early 1794 Contract flintlock muskets. The lock and barrel have a nice untouched even brown patina. The stock is excellent with a nice dark brown patina. All markings are sharp and crisp. Stock appears to have no repairs.** $4,000-$8,000 PROVENANCE: David Stewart (2009); John W. Vagnetti
