European 16th Century Swiss Halberd Pole-Arm

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 293)

European Swiss Pole-arm known as a Halberd Circa mid to late 16th Century. Primarily used by foot soldiers and derived from the spike and the axe. Used offensively against cavalry throughout Europe during the 16th century and earlier. Many regional variations were used in Germany, Austria, and Italy. This Halberd has a concave axe blade with a cross punched through it and a makers mark heavily embossed on the right side, an angled rear beak featuring a downward turned hook, and  a narrow 16.5" square-shaped thrusting spike style blade. It's mounted on a Octagonal pole attached on 4 of the broad sides with 10" side straps and round top nails. The wood pole itself is around 80" long, and overall length is 99.25". This pole has likely been replaced at some point.  Metal is lightly pitted with a small crack in the top of the axe blade, along with some heavy dents on the bottom of the axe and hook parts, but displays well. Wood is in excellent shape. Overall in very good condition for age.
