20IU-13 AMERICAN KENTUCKY FLINTLOCK PISTOL

Lot # 283 (Sale Order: 351 of 1779)

As found 18th century American “Kentucky” flintlock pistol with side plate stamped, “Revolutionary War. 1776. Captain Daniel Reiff.” The pistol is 13 ¼” in overall l...moreength with an 8” octagon barrel of .52 caliber plus smoothbore with brass mounts. The stocks show most of the original reddish color violin type varnish with minor nicks, mars and scratches. There is a crack behind the top rear area of the lock that extends to the tang. The ram rod is missing. An original flintlock with correct small parts, completely uncleaned and unrestored as discovered by Walter J. O’Connor in the Pasadena area in the late 80’s-90’s and sold by Little John’s for the Reiff descendants almost 30 years ago. Unfortunately, the information on Reiff was lost but Little John recalls he was from Pennsylvania, possibly the Lancaster area. Est.: $3,500-$7,000.

Colt Single Action Army Revolver Exhibition engraved and silver inlaid with incised carved ivory grips in .38 special caliber with 7 ½” barrel, blue finish with gold t...morerim, S/N 121944. Post WWII re-barrel and cylinder. This elaborate Colt shows nicely cut scrolls with flush silver inlay and eagle on the left recoil shield along with ramshead on loading gate. We have seen a couple of similar engraved art works that were brokered by Hy Hunter who provided fancy arms to the western movie stars of 1950s and 60s. This colt shows black powder patent dates and matching frame, back strap and trigger guard. Fine as restored with 99% blue finish showing all the gold on front of hammer and trigger and no evidence of firing. The action is tight and the bore is excellent. The Colt shows original ivory grips that fit impeccably with yellowing and the right amount of natural aging. The revolver is very good overall with crisp metal surfaces and generous traces of blue and case hardening mixed with a natural patina. 30%-50% light original cylinder scene with visible Ornsby signature. Good address and markings. Crisp edges. Tight action and matching visible serial numbers. A scarce variation being a New York iron guard engraved that old collector’s feel about 6-12 exist.
