1948 Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece Pre-Model 17 .22 LR 6" Double Action Revolver

Lot # 76 (Sale Order: 76 of 391)

1948 Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece Pre-Model 17 .22LR 6" Double Action Revolver

Our Assessment: The Model 17 was first produced as the K-22 Masterpiece in the Pre-War days before Smith & Wesson implemented the number system to their guns. It is a fun rimfire revolver built on a full-size K-Frame. The design was massively popular as its .22 chambering was perfect for use as an outdoorsman's kit gun, and with its K-Frame also dominated target shooting and training for centerfire K-Frame revolvers. The revolver would go on to be named the Model 17 in 1957. Introduced in 1931, the K-22 saw a few improvements such as the now-iconic micrometer adjustable rear sight introduced in the 2nd Model and the barrel rib introduced on this, the 3rd Model K-22 Masterpiece or Pre-Model 17.This 1948 example is from before they started marking the model numbers and is in Very Good condition with about 75% of its finish remaining, a great bore in its 6" barrel paired with magna stocks. The revolver is one of the early revolvers known as a five screw model. At some point, the S&W accountants got involved and likely asked how they could cut costs. The side plate was switched to groove and tongue, the top screw was deleted, an engineer was patted on the back, and an era was ended. The deletion of the "fifth screw" marked the start of a never-ending cost-cutting arms race that continues to this day. The fourth screw in the front of the trigger guard was next to go. Did either of these changes hurt the gun? Certainly not, some of the best shooters in the world are burning it down with three screw Smith & Wesson's and they do great! There is just something special about these old revolvers, they were made by true craftsmen who wanted to stake their reputation on designing and producing the best possible product, costs be damned. If you have handled or shot one of these old revolvers, you know that your modern S&W might shoot just as good, but these older guns have subtle nuances that are there nonetheless. This particular revolver will make a great gun for what originally made the design so popular, target shooting, recreational plinking, or use as a training revolver to save some money on centerfire ammo. With its 5-screw frame, pinned barrel and classic look, they quite literally do not make them like this anymore. This a wonderful opportunity at an old-school Smith & Wesson with all of the quality craftsmanship they were known for in the early post-war years. Please see our photos and good luck!

Smith & Wesson The .44 Magnum Pre-Model 29 5 Screw Coke Bottle Grip Revolver & Case

Lot # 79 (Sale Order: 79 of 391)

1956-1957 Smith & Wesson The .44 Magnum Pre-Model 29 6.5" 5 Screw Coke Bottle Grip Revolver & Case

Our Assessment: Developed in a collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Remington with the input of big-bore handgun shooters including Elmer Keith, The .44 Magnum revolver and cartridge took the revolver world by storm in the 1950s, later to be known worldwide, even outside the firearms community, as "the most powerful handgun in the world" due to its portrayal in the Dirty Harry movies. This Smith & Wesson's famous "The .44 Magnum" built on a 4-screw square butt N-Frame paired with a 6 1/2? barrel. This revolver has a nice blued finish, with a wide serrated case-colored trigger and wide checkered hammer. The Smith & Wesson model number scheme was introduced in 1957, the Model 29 was not marked as such until 1958 (S&W Standard Catalog 4th ed. pg 191). This one is a 5-screw model late in the range, the standard catalog states that the range for 5-screw models is S130000 to S167500 but 5-screw models have been seen as high as S174500. The standard catalog also states that the serial numbers were not marked on some of the parts of later 4-screws which would account for the lack of markings on this one since it just happens to be one of the few 5-screw models in the 4-screw range. This one looks great and has minimal wear. No collection is complete without a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum so you might as well make it this one. Please see our pictures and good luck!

Rick Hacker's Smith & Wesson The .357 Registered Magnum Revolver, Certificate, Tube & Box

Lot # 81 (Sale Order: 81 of 391)

Rick Hacker's Smith & Wesson The .357 Registered Magnum 6 1/2" Revolver, Certificate, Tube & Box

Our Assessment:The grandson of Smith & Wesson co-founder Daniel Wesson, Col. Douglas Wesson, collaborated with Phil Sharpe and Elmer Keith, both renowned handloading experts, and set out to develop a cartridge that could propel a projectile at 1400 fps with muzzle energy of more than 700 ft. lbs. and the .357 Magnum, the first of the magnums, was born. Smith & Wesson developed a revolver around the cartridge on their N frame with initial production being entirely on a special order basis. The revolvers could be ordered with barrel lengths from 3 1/2" to 8 3/4" available in 1/4" increments, choice of sights, grips, finish, and even hammer profile. early production guns were presented to luminaries such as J. Edgar Hoover, John Olin, Phil Sharpe, George S. Patton and Ed McGivern. These early .357s would be built to the customer's specifications and shipped out with a registration card which could be returned to request a registration certificate, giving the new firearm the name "Registered Magnum".

This a beautiful example of one of the Rarest and most sought-after revolvers ever made by the world's premier revolver manufacturer, Smith & Wesson. Additional paperwork included with this gun include 1) a letter from S&W Historian Roy Jinks to gunwriter Rick Hacker confirming the gun’s history and authenticity, copies of factory records showing the original purchase order for this gun from American Sporting Goods Co, and subsequent corresondance between Imse and Smith & Wesson. WWII Nazi Police Mauser HSc .32 ACP Semi Automatic Pistol C&R

Lot # 88 (Sale Order: 88 of 391)

WWII Nazi Police Mauser HSc .32 ACP Semi Automatic Pistol C&R

Our Assessment: The Mauser Model HSc pistols were made by the Germans during WWII and later by the French when they took over their factory and tooling. It was originally intended as Mauser's response to the Walther PPK, and the HSc competed with the Walther and Sauer 38H pistols for police and military use. This a late WWII production model with a late war blued finish, smooth sighting plane, and no provision for a lanyard. The NSDAP party members could purchase pistols privately which would not bear a Waffenamt and it was also possible for civilians, especially in occupied territories, to own pistols due to the threat of partisans. This one bears commercial eagle over N proofs and also has a Nazi Police eagle over swastika and "L" on the frame. This second variation police model has matching parts numbers on the slide, barrel, and frame. It one looks good and should appeal to those who have an interest in WWII or NSDAP weapons but will also make a nice shooter. Please see our photos and good luck!

Make: Mauser

Model: Nazi Police Marked HSc

Serial Number: 909050

Year of Manufacture: 1942-1944

Caliber: .32 ACP

WWI Mauser C96 Broomhandle Red Nine 9mm Pistol & Shoulder Stock

Lot # 89 (Sale Order: 89 of 391)

Our Assessment: The Broomhandle Model 1896 Mauser is certainly an interesting looking firearm, and the "Red Nine" variants are the most distinctive of any pistol made. During WWI Mauser had two contracts with the military, the first for 7.63mm pistols and the second for 9mm pistols. It soon became apparent that two nearly identical guns with dissimilar ammo was not a good idea. In December 1917, a decision was made to burn a large "9" into the grips and fill them in red paint, with those already issued to be similarly marked in the field, thus creating three variants of the 9mm pistols: those with no marks on the grips, those with factory "nines" and those with "nines" added in the field. This pistol is a 9mm Military Contract with factory burned "nines" in the grips. The serial numbers are all matching, including those stamped into the grips, and the pistol has the correct "New Safety" and an Army acceptance mark on the right side of the barrel extension. The pistol still has its lanyard ring attached to the butt, and to complete the package for the discerning collector, it comes with a wooden shoulder stock/holster serialized to the pistol and a leather holster for the shoulder stock made by Arn Hoffmann of Berlin in 1916. The pistol is about Fine condition with 96% of its current finish remaining. It may have been refinished, we don’t see any obvious signs, but the finish is of higher quality than we have seen on previous examples. The bore is gray with light wear in the rifling and very light erosion scattered throughout the bore. There were only about 141000 of this model made, with a little less than two thirds having factory marked grips, and one can only guess as to what number survived the trench warfare of WWI. This a Rare pistol that is sure to be of interest to the serious collectors.

Make: Mauser

Model: 1896 9mm Military Contract

Serial Number: 50939

Year of Manufacture: 1916-1917

Markings: The top rear of the bolt is marked with "939" and the top of the bolt stop is marked "0939". The right side of the frame is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER / OBERNDORF A. NECKAR". The flat on the underside of the barrel is marked "K", "k", "S", "O", "Z" and "8". The barrel just in front of the flat is marked with a six-pointed star and "W". The rear face of the frame is marked with "50939". The rear face of the hammer is marked with a "S" stamped over the top of a "N" (New Safety-Introduced in about 1915). The bottom of the trigger guard is marked with a script "N". The inside surfaces of the grips are stamped with the number "50939".

Barrel Length: 5.5"

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are walnut with 32 grooves and a large "9" burnt into both grips and filled with red paint. The grips have a lacquered finish. The "9s" are well formed and appear to be done at the factory. (References show that the grip grooves changed from fine (32) to coarse (23) through production, and that grips in the 57XXX to 71XXX serial number range used 27 grooves. Also, "field" nines appear to be below SN 50,000 while "factory" nines appear in the 70,000+ range. There are several light scratches and a few tiny dings in the smooth areas. The grips are in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: The pistol is blued. The safety and extractor have a fire blued finish and the bolt, lock frame and hammer are "In The White".

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is gray with light wear in the rifling. The is light erosion scattered throughout the bore.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 96% of its current metal finish. There are wire wheel marks under the finish of the barrel, barrel extension and magazine. There is thinning on the underside of the barrel and on the edges of the barrel extension, bolt stop, and frame. There are several light handling marks under and in the finish of the barrel and barrel extension. There is a ding in the top of the bolt at the back of the extractor. The knurling on the push-button release on the rear sight slider is sharp, the serrations on the hammer are sharp, the serrations on the bolt show light to moderate wear and the safety serrations are sharp. The grip screw is sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, this pistol rates in about Fine condition as possibly re-finished.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a lanyard ring, a wooden shoulder stock/holster, a leather holster for the stock and a wooden handled cleaning rod. The shoulder stock wood has an oak colored satin finish and the metal parts are blued. The back of the holster between the two belt loops is marked "ARN HOFFMAN / BERLIN / 1916".

DWM Pistole Parabellum .30 Luger Pistol Carbine & Shoulder Stock

Lot # 90 (Sale Order: 90 of 391)

DWM Pistole Parabellum .30 Luger (7.65×21mm Parabellum) Pistol Carbine & Shoulder Stock

Our Assessment: This example is quite interesting as it has non-standard numbering and proof marking locations. The second of the three volume series "Pistole Parabellum" by Joachim Gortz and Geoffrey L. Sturgess notes what they referred to as "Some Bizarre Post-WWI Parabellums" with "non-suffixed serial numbers of one to four digits of various, sometimes bizarre, configurations". The book notes irregular application of proof marks, use of both military and commercial pre-war components, and the photographed examples include a carbine much like this one. In the tumultuous times of post-WWI Germany, it's understandable that even a firm as large as DWM would have some inconsistency, so this may well just be the product of those circumstances. We do believe that the buttstock has been refinished and it is not serial-marked, but it is a handsome example of a Luger Carbine. Please see our photos and good luck!

Make: DWM

Model: Pistole Parabellum, Luger Pistol/Carbine

Serial Number: 9472

Year of Manufacture: The frame appears to have been made between 1914 and 1917. Assembly to its current configuration was most likely performed 1919-1921.

Caliber: .30 Luger (7.65×21mm Parabellum)

Action Type: Semi-Auto Pistol

Markings: The front toggle is marked "DWM". The serial number or the last two digits are marked on the left of the barrel extension, the sear, extractor, bolt each toggle link, firing pin, sideplate, trigger, takEdown lever, safety arm, bolt stop and the inside of each grip panel. Assembly number "11" is marked on the forend wedge, the bottom of the barrel and the barrel extension's lug. There are crown/N proof marks on the top of the bolt, each toggle link, the right of the barrel and the right of the barrel extension. There are no import marks.

Barrel Length: 12"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a serrated, ramped base fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a four-position "U"-notch which slides in a banded base fixed to the rear of the barrel. The sight arm is released with a button on the left of the base, allowing it to be slid to each position. There is no rear sight on the rear toggle link.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered wood. A tang has been mounted to the front of the frame for the wedge-secured checkered walnut forend which has a schnabel tip. There is an included checkered walnut buttstock with smooth steel buttplate which can be mounted to the frame’s stock lug (we have not tested the fit as it is not legal to install the stock in California). The grips show light handling wear with some spots of compressed checkers and a few light nicks and scratches. The checkering is generally well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The forend has similar light wear. The buttstock has checkering which appears to have been chased or cut outside the DWM factory with scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. The wood is generally well fit to the metal, but notably shy at the toe and slightly shy at the heel. Overall, the grips are in Very Good-plus condition, the forend is Very Good and the buttstock is in about Very Good condition as refinished and/or not original to the gun.

Type of Finish: Blue & Straw

Finish Originality: This pistol was most likely re-worked in the post-WWI era. See Our Assessment.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is some minor erosion in the bore, mostly at the muzzle-end. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8 out of 10.Many military and C&R-eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 90% of its current metal finish. The finish is generally strong throughout. There is some light operational wear and some scattered minor oxidation. There is some scattered minor erosion, mostly on the right of the frame. There are some scattered light nicks and scuffs. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are generally clear, the toggle proof marks are poorly struck. Overall, this pistol is in about Good condition (see Mechanics).

Mechanics: Something about the fit of the sideplate, trigger and sear makes it inconsistent to drop the striker when the trigger is pressed.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a non-serialized stock assembly and a single non-matching wood floorplate magazine.

Lot # 91 (Sale Order: 91 of 391)

WWII Mauser 42 Code P.08 Luger 9mm Semi Auto Pistol

Our Assessment:Certainly one of the most iconic military sidearms of the 20th Century, the P.08 Luger served the German military in both World Wars and variants saw service in other countries. This example is in about Good overall condition. It was produced by Mauser in 1942 and was known as the "Black Widow" because of its dark salt blue finish. The parts are all serial matching with a "byf" code for Mauser on the front toggle, the correct eagle holding a globe with swastika inspection mark on the right side of the barrel and a "eagle / 135" Waffenamt on the left side. The inspection marks on the right side of the receiver are not legible. This pistol will display well, at least from the left side, for those who prefer the "been there, done that" appearance. If the collectors don't take enough notice, it can be used for home protection.

Make:Mauser

Model:42 Date Coded P.08 Luger

Serial Number:5868d

WWI German DWM P.08 Luger 9mm Semi Automatic Pistol

Our Assessment: Certainly one of the most iconic military sidearms of the 20th Century, the P.08 Luger served the German military in both World Wars and variants saw service in other countries. This example was produced by DWM in 1915 during the Great War. Produced at the beginning of the war, it shows wear consistent with its age and service, but retains matching numbered parts including the magazine. There is a touch-up on the left of the barrel, but it is otherwise all original with all the correct markings. This a nice find for WWI firearms collectors and for Luger collectors in particular as you don't find very many that survived two world wars in this nice of a condition.

Type of Finish: The finish is blued. The trigger, ejector and the right side of the magazine release are straw colored, and the toggle link pin and the trigger bar spring have a fire blue finish.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with light wear in the rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.

There is finish loss on the edges of the receiver and frame, with thinning in the remainder, with the receiver and sideplate having a somewhat mottled look. There are also a few small spots of finish loss in the front strap. DWM Commercial Alphabet P.08 Luger 7.65x21mm Parabellum Semi Automatic Pistol

Lot # 93 (Sale Order: 93 of 391)

DWM Commercial Alphabet P.08 Luger 7.65x21mm Parabellum Semi Automatic Pistol

Our Assessment: This particular Luger was refurbished and/or fabricated during the Weimar-era for commercial sales. It is chambered for the 7.65mm Parabellum cartridge, has a 3 5/8" long barrel and is marked "GERMANY" in English; all characteristics associated with a refurbished handgun destined for commercial sales in other nations. Between 1921-1928 there were a number of Lugers that were both refurbished and fabricated specifically for export, primarily to the United States with its large commercial firearms market (hence the English language "GERMANY" marking). These commercial exports are referred to today as the "alphabet commercial" Lugers due to the serialization pattern applied to them and the lack of most other markings typically seen on Luger P.08 handguns. This specimen has some light wear but is in quite good shape given its age. There is some slight variance in the condition of the markings, so it is difficult to say whether the pistol has been refinished since coming to America or if some parts simply required a little more time on the wheel when they were re-worked at the factory. The sideplate has been replaced, but other serial-marked parts are matching. The pistol retains a more than decent bore and strong mechanics. This a great option for collectors of historical firearms and Luger fans. Good luck on your bid!

Make: Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken (DWM)

Model: Luger P.08 (Parabellum-Pistole)Serial#: 5116o

Year of Manufacture: Circa 1921-1928, C&R

Caliber: 7.65x21mm Parabellum (.30 Luger)

Action Type: Semi-Automatic Pistol (no magazine included)

Barrel Length: 3 5/8"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is serrated blade dovetailed to a banded base integral to the muzzle. The rear sight is a "V"-notch integral to the rear toggle link.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip panels are two-piece checkered wood. The grips have minor handling wear with a few light nicks and scuffs. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grip panels are in Very Good-Fine condition as not original to the gun.

Type of Finish: Blue and Straw

Finish Originality: Refinished, the sideplate is not original to the gun.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling. There is some scattered minor erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8 out of 10.Many military and C&R-eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide.

Overall Condition: The pistol retains about 92% of its current metal finish. The finish is thinning at some edges. There is some muting and handling wear in the strawed parts. There is infrequent minor surface oxidation, most notable on the sideplate. There are a few light nicks and small scratches. The action shows light operational wear. Most markings remain clear, the proof mark on the bolt is shallow and incomplete. The screwheads have light tool-marks with strong slots. Overall, the pistol is in Very Good-plus condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is barely perceptible play between the barrel assembly and frame. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

DWM Commercial Alphabet P.08 Luger 7.65x21mm Parabellum Semi Automatic Pistol

Lot # 94 (Sale Order: 94 of 391)

DWM Commercial Alphabet P.08 Luger 7.65x21mm Parabellum Semi Automatic Pistol

Our Assessment: While the Luger saw extensive military use, there were also commercial sales both in Germany and abroad. After the Great War, the Allies imposed restrictions on the German arms industry, but there were still commercial Lugers produced such as this one. Most serial marked parts match and the pistol has been given a new high-polish blue finish so it looks great for its age. You will need to address the sear issue before firing.

Make: DWM

Model: P.08 Commercial Alphabet Luger

Serial Number: 5116o

Year of Manufacture: 1921-1928

Caliber: .30 Luger

Action Type: Short-Recoil Toggle-Action Semi-Automatic Detachable Magazine Fed

Barrel Length: 3 5/8"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated blade dovetailed to a base integral to a boss at the muzzle. The rear sight is a "V"-notch integral to the rear toggle link.

Grip Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered walnut. The grips have moderate wear. The left panel has some sort of impressed marking. There are no chips or cracks. The grips rate in about Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is gray. The rifling is heavily worn, but visible. There is scattered erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its current metal finish. The balance is mostly scattered spots of minor oxidation and operational wear. The screw heads are tool marked with strong slots. The markings are soft, but legible. Overall, this handgun rates in about Good condition as refinished (see Mechanics).

Mechanics: During our function check, it was noted that the sear would occasionally fail to catch when the bolt comes forward. This a safety issue and needs to be addressed before firing the pistol. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a more thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

WWI German erfurt Imperial Arsenal 1918 P.08 Luger 9mm Semi Automatic Pistol

Lot # 95 (Sale Order: 95 of 391)

WWI German erfurt Imperial Arsenal 1918 P.08 Luger 9mm Semi Automatic Pistol

Our Assessment: This erfurt Arsenal made Luger was made in 1918, having Revisions-Commission markings and a flat at the front of the chamber ring. This flat was put on all late-production erfurt P.08 pistols to accommodate the adjustable rear sight of the Long or "Artillery" model pistols, whether or not they would actually have one installed. All of the serial numbers on the pistol are matching, including the grips and magazine, which is a nice find for the collectors. As 1918 wore on, hope was lost for the Imperial German Army and certain standards were loosened to increase production and get more arms to soldiers in the field. Finish was rougher, cosmetic or non-essential tolerance flaws were overlooked, and the Revisions-Commission would approve some pistols which had previously been turned down by inspectors. This pistol is in about Good condition. Cosmetically it looks great for its age, but there is some damage at the left-rear of the bolt which prevents removal of the firing pin. This an interesting find for Luger collectors and those with an interest in German military arms as used in WWI and WWII. Please see our photos and good luck!

The front of the frame under the barrel is marked "316 / p" and the underside of the barrel is marked "316", the bottom of the barrel is also marked "8,85", the top-right with an Imperial German eagle. The top of the barrel extension is marked "1918, the left side is marked "316". The right side of the barrel extension is marked with three crowned scripted characters and an Imperial German eagle. The left side of the breechblock is marked with an eagle. The left side of the frame in front of the safety is marked "GESICHERT". The left of the extractor is marked "GELADEN". Type of Finish: Blued, some small parts Strawed

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The lands are semi-bright, the grooves are gray. The rifling is sharp. There scattered light erosion in the bore, mostly in the grooves. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 7 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 87% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is light handling wear in the grip areas and some finish wear at the muzzle. The controls show handling wear. There is some scattered minor surface oxidation, easiest seen in the worn areas. There are some light nicks, scuffs and scratches. Mauser Post-War Bolo C96 1896 Broomhandle 7.63x25mm with Shoulder Stock

Lot # 97 (Sale Order: 97 of 391)

Mauser Post-War Bolo C96 1896 Broomhandle 7.63x25mm Semi-Automatic Pistol with Shoulder Stock

Our Assessment: The Broomhandle Model 1896 Mauser is certainly an interesting looking firearm. Its features are the most distinctive of any other pistol. In addition to being popularized in Soviet films as the iconic weapon of the Russian revolution and civil war, it was even used as a basis for futuristic weapons like the blaster used by Han Solo in Star Wars. This pistol is a Post-War Bolo. It has been refinished, so it looks great for its age. The gun is in pretty good shape overall apart from the bore, though the bore condition is somewhat typical considering the history of these pistols, many of which were used in China and Russia during their conflicts in the early 20th Century. The serialized parts match with the exception of the sear, though the included stock/holster does not. This pistol should appeal to anyone who always wanted to own a Broomhandle, and for the collectors this a neat example of the Post-War Bolo. Please see our photos and good luck!

The leather harness appears to be a reproduction (as does the cleaning rod), showing fairly minor wear with intact stitching.

Correct WWI Broomhandle Mauser C96 Red Nine 9mm Pistol

Lot # 98 (Sale Order: 98 of 391)

Correct WWI Broomhandle Mauser C96 Red Nine 9mm Pistol

Our Assessment: The Broomhandle Model 1896 Mauser is certainly an interesting looking firearm, and the "Red Nine" variants are the most distinctive of any pistol made. During WWI Mauser had two military contracts, the first for 7.63mm pistols and the second for 9mm pistols. Two identical guns with dissimilar ammo was not a good idea and in 1917, a decision was made to burn a large "9" into the grips of 9mm pistols, with those already issued to be similarly marked in the field, thus creating three variants of the 9mm pistols: those with no marks on the grips, with factory "nines" and with "nines" added in the field. This pistol is a 9mm Military Contract with factory "nines" in the grips. The numbers are all matching, including those stamped into the grips. There were about 141,000 of this model made and one can only guess as to what number survived the trench warfare of WWI. This a Rare pistol that is sure to be of interest to the serious collectors.

Grip Configuration & Condition: The grips are serrated walnut with large red "9" burned into each panel. The grips have scattered wear with some nicks, dings, scuffs and scratches. The serrations are well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

WWII Nazi Marked Wehrmacht Spreewerk cyq P.38 Semi Automatic Pistol

Lot # 99 (Sale Order: 99 of 391)

WWII Nazi Marked Wehrmacht Spreewerk cyq P.38 Semi Automatic Pistol

Our Assessment: This particular specimen is a WWII-era P.38 that was made by the Spreewerk in 1944. The pistol is characteristic of mid-late war production specimens; it lacks the more thorough inspection marks seen on early production specimens. The handgun was made at Spreewerk (evidenced by the "cyq" code and Waffenamts). The Spreewerk GmbH was a German firm that produced war material for the Wehrmacht during WWII. The firm's operations were spread across the Reich starting in Spandau during the mid-1930s and expanding into Grottau, part of Czechoslovakia that fell under German control when the territory was annexed by the Third Reich. The Spreewerk began to make P.38s in 1942 and continued to produce them until the Red Army captured its facilities at the end of WWII. This handgun comes from this chaotic period, and indeed it appears to have been captured by the Soviets. The "X" marking on the left of the frame is typical of these captured pistols as is the "dip" colt blue finish found on all of the parts, including those left unfinished when the pistol was originally manufactured. This may also explain the presence of Walther grips on the pistol, as many of these pistols had some parts replaced when the Soviets refurbished them. Apart from the grips, all of the other serial marked parts are matching and don't appear to have been "force-matched" as the Soviets were also known to do. The result is a pistol which has a lot of history behind it and would make a great addition to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Make: Metallwarenfabrik Spreewerk GmbH (cyq)

Model: P.38 Serial#: 8524s

Year of Manufacture: 1944

Caliber: 9mm Luger

Action Type: Single/Double-Action Semi-Automatic Pistol fed by a Detachable 8-round Magazine with a blued Locking Block

Barrel Length: 5"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed to a banded base by the muzzle. The rear sight is a "U"-notch dovetailed to the slide.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip panels are two-piece serrated AEG panels. The interior of the panels have eagle/359 Walther waffenamts as well as "151" (see Finish Originality, Our Assessment). The grips have light handling wear with a few small marks. The serrations are well defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Very Good-Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished. The "X" marking on the left of the frame is typical of pistols capture by the Soviets and the import marking is through the finish. It is likely that the finish is original to the arsenal refurbishment typically performed by the Soviets on these captured pistols.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray with well defined rifling. There is scattered light erosion in the bore with some pitting in the grooves. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 5 or 6 out of 10.Many military and C&R-eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide.

Overall Condition: The pistol retains about 90% of its current metal finish. The finish is generally strong with some scattered minor surface oxidation, mostly on the slide flats. The action shows minor operational wear. The screw head is sharp. The markings are generally clear, some of the German inspection marks are poorly struck. Overall, the pistol is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The gun comes with a single 8-round post-war commercial Walther magazine.

Argentine DGFM Sistema Colt Model 1927 .45 ACP 5" Semi Automatic Pistol

Lot # 100 (Sale Order: 100 of 391)

Argentine DGFM Sistema Colt Model 1927 .45 ACP 5" Semi Automatic Pistol

Our Assessment: In 1914, the Argentine military adopted the Colt M1911 as their standard military sidearm and contracted with Colt to supply these guns. Argentina took shipment of 2,151 of these weapons between 1914 and 1919. In 1923, Argentina adopted an armaments bill that would eliminate Argentine dependency on foreign arms. Under this bill, the Argentine Congress authorized appropriations for a military modernization program and prepared the infrastructure for a domestic arms industry. In accordance with the new law, an aircraft factory was established in 1927, a munitions factory in 1933, a small steel mill in 1934, and a small arms factory in 1936, all of which were managed by Argentine army officers. In 1927, the Argentine Commission for Foreign Acquisitions secured a licensing agreement giving the Argentine government the right to manufacture these pistols using drawings, material specifications, instructions, etc. supplied by Colt. Production of the Sistema Colts began in 1927, and 14,000 were produced by 1942. In 1945, a new factory (FMAP) was brought online and produced another 88,494 pistols through 1966. The Sistema Colts continued to be used in Argentina until the 1990s when they were replaced by Browning High Powers. The Sistema Colts were identical to 1911A1 pistols produced by Colt, and the parts were interchangeable. Top-quality steel was used in the construction, and they are known to be as tough and reliable as those made by Colt. This pistol was made at the FMAP factory and was issued to the Argentine Army. The pistol is in Very Good refinished condition with a decent bore and strong mechanics. The high quality of the Sistema Colts make them very collectable, especially ones like this with matching numbers.

Finish Originality: Refinished. There is a JLD import mark on the left of the frame.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There is some erosion in the bore, mostly at the muzzle-end. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 7 out of 10.
