"For Your Country's Sake Today" WWII Women's Armed Services Poster

"For Your Country's Sake Today" WWII Women's Armed Services Recruitment Poster

The bottom is marked "P-75-RPB-4-20-44-540M / Recruiting Publicity Bureau / United States Army". Congress gave members of the Women's Army Corps (WAC), a branch of the U.S. Army, full service status during World War II. However, the legislation that did so was set to expire in 1948. As early as 1946, Army leaders requested that enlisted women be made a permanent part of the Army. Following two years of legislative debate, Congress passed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948. The act granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and the recently formed Air Force. Posters during World War II were designed to give citizens a positive outlook, a sense of patriotism, and confidence. From a practical point, they were used to encourage all Americans to help with the war effort. These types of war posters called on every man, woman, and child to endure the personal sacrifice and domestic adjustments to further the national agenda. This paper poster has a canvas backing, measuring 29.25" x 20.5". This original vintage poster is in excellent condition, showing only a couple light handling marks....more

Newsmap Overseas edition Original U.S. WWII Double Sided Poster "Let This Do Your Talking!"

Lot # 1238 (Sale Order: 236 of 384)

Newsmap Overseas edition "Let This Do Your Talking!" Original U.S. WWII Double Sided Framed Poster

This double sided poster from 1944 has one side showing the end of a Garand rifle and bayonet with the message "Silence Means Security…Let This do Your Talking" and the other side shows the different war fronts during WWII. Concerns about national security always intensify during wartime. When the U.S. entered World War II, the Government alerted citizens to the presence of enemy spies and saboteurs. "Careless talk" posters warned people that even just a small snippet of information regarding troop movements or other logistical details would be very useful to the enemy. Well-meaning citizens could easily compromise national security and soldiers' safety with careless talk. The poster reads "Silence means security. When a man stands ready To fight–to his last drop of Blood–to his last breath of Life–he doesn't do much Talking. He lets his weapon Do that for him. And, later, he doesn't talk about where he has been– or when–or what he did–or saw. He knows that the safety of millions depends on his silence! Let this do your talking!" The second side of the poster shows a large map of France, a map of the Pacific Theater and a short description of each war front. WWII Framed poster measures 47" x 35". This original poster is in Very Good overall condition showing light to moderate wear. There are a few minor stains, edge wear, creases and abrasions along sharp folds, and a small hole in the "he doesn't do much talking" type....more

3 Winchester Vintage Roller Skating Double Sided Framed Posters

Lot # 1239 (Sale Order: 237 of 384)

3 Winchester Vintage Roller Skating Double Sided Framed Posters

This a lot of three double sided matching posters, when combined the three images show a complete illustration. These vintage Winchester posters are classic American advertisements with very nice early 20th century illustrations. These would have been hung near each other as a unified display in a retail outlet or department store. One side was to be shown for a week, then flipped and the other displayed for the next week, and then new posters would have taken their place. These kinds of displays are Rare and are becoming more difficult to find, as most were discarded after use. One side shows a man painting a house and a woman cleaning a window, the top reads "e-10 House cleaning and paint display to be shown week April 13 to April 19". The reverse side is a Winchester Roller Skate advertisement, it shows three boys roller skating with a dog chasing after them, the top reads "e-9 roller skates display to be shown week April 6 to April 12". These vintage original advertisements are in Fair Plus overall condition, showing moderate wear. There is wear and tear along most edges, minor creasing in a few places, some small missing pieces and little holes in a few spots. The house painting & cleaning image shows stains, smears and black spots. The roller skating side has fared better showing a mostly clear image with minor blemishes and markings....more

S/N 0053 Johnson Model 1941 .30-06 Dutch Semi Auto Rifle & Bayonet

Lot # 1240 (Sale Order: 238 of 384)

WWII Johnson Automatics Model 1941 .30-06 Rare Dutch Semi Automatic Rifle & Bayonet

Our Assessment: This Rare Johnson Automatics Model 1941 is in nice shape for a Military Rifle that is over 75 years old. The rifle has clear markings on the metal which include a Dutch acceptance mark. A limited number of these rifles were used by American troops during WWII and are prized by collectors. This Model 1941 is in Very Good Plus to Fine condition and comes with a Model 1941 bayonet. The following information can be found (with much more detail) on pages 73 to 87 and pages 216 to 223 of Bruce Canfield's book, Johnson Rifles and Machine Guns: In July of 1940 the Netherlands (Dutch) placed an initial contract for 10,200 Johnson Model 1941 Rifles. At the time Johnson Automatics did not have the production capabilities to fulfill the contract. Johnson had to develop partnerships to fulfill production of the rifles. Johnson partnered with the Universal Winding Company of Cranston, Rhode Island to form the Cranston Arms Co.; hence the Cranston Arms Co. "triangle" stamping on all Model 1941 Rifles. The "triangle" was a Dutch National symbol.Johnson Automatics went bankrupt in 1949. Many of the leftover Johnson Automatics spare parts and barrels were purchased by an importer who was also able to acquire surplus military M1941 Rifles that had been sold to the Dutch. The Johnson Automatics spare parts & barrels were used to put the surplus Dutch Johnson M1941 Rifles into working order. These rifles were then offered to the public by mail order from the late 1950s into the late 1960s. Many were offered in "as is" Military configuration while others were "Sporterized". The Sporterized rifles featured new barrels made by the Apex Rifle Company of Sun Valley, CA.

Ohio Ordnance Works 1918A3 BAR .30-06 SLR Self Loading Semi Automatic Rifle

Our Assessment: The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) was America's first domestic light machine gun. John Browning demonstrated the rifle to the US Government shortly before America joined WWI and it proceeded to see service through the Vietnam War with some improvements and modifications along the way. Ohio Ordnance Works has reintroduced the rifle as a Self Loading Rifle or SLR, a semi-automatic version which fires from a closed bolt but retains the appearance of the 1918A2. Designated the 1918A3, Ohio Ordnance's rifle uses the same tilting-lock, gas-piston operating system as the original. This BAR is in Fine Plus to excellent condition. It comes in its original shipping box with two 20-round magazines, a bipod, carry handle, sling, cleaning kit, and other accessories.

Make: Ohio Ordnance Works, Inc.

WWII Remington 1903 .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1942

Lot # 1242 (Sale Order: 240 of 384)

WWII Remington 1903 .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1942

Our Assessment: When the US Army was looking for a rifle design to replace the 1898 Krag rifle, they looked directly at the Spanish Model 1893 Mauser. This was due to the fact that the performance of the Model 1893 Mauser was far superior than that of the 1898 Krag during the Spanish-American War. The Model 1903 is basically a redesigned Mauser clone. A U.S. Patent Court eventually found that the U.S. Army had violated Mauser's patents and required the U.S. Army to pay the German Mauser manufacturers patent royalties. Payments were stopped once WWI started. The 1903 has a strong reliable action that served the Army for over thirty years in two world wars. The 1903A3 is an improved version of the 1903 rifle that was introduced in 1942. The most significant change was the switch to a receiver bridge-mounted rear aperture sight. This Remington Model 1903 was made in 1942, it has been rebuilt and refinished. This 1903 is in Pretty Good shape and still looks impressive for a 80+ year old military bolt action rifle. This 1903 has nice Remington markings on both the receiver and the 1942 dated barrel. It also has a small "R" stamping on the bolt handle. This 1903 has strong mechanics, a nice parkerized finish and a well preserved wood stock. This Remington 1903 will make a fine addition to your military or historical collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Make: Remington

Model: 1903

Serial Number: 3084312

Year of Manufacture: 1942

Caliber: .30-06 Springfield

Action Type: Bolt Action Rifle, Fixed Internal Magazine

Barrel Length: 24"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a pinned blade set atop a raised base. The front sight has been touched up with black paint, the band shows scratches. The rear sight is a U notched blade attached to a fully adjustable sight ladder. When flipped up, separate notches and an aperture on the ladder can be used for sighting.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a semi pistol grip, nose cap with bayonet lug, stacking loop, barrel band, 2 sling loops and a smooth metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. The stock shows a deep scratch on the left below the receiver. It shows other scrapes and compression marks. The handguards have been coated in lacquer. The LOP measures 13" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Good Plus overall condition, as refurbished.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and has deep rifling. The muzzle and grooves are light gray. The bore shows erosion at the muzzle and in the grooves. The bore has an M.E. of 1. In this writer's opinion and for the age, the bore rates a 8.5 out of 10.Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950's.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. There are some scuffs and scratch marks, the bottom metal shows thinning light discoloration from oxidation. The screw heads are sharp, some show light tool marks. Most markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a more thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A green nylon sling is included along with a plastic piler tube that is stored in the buttstock.

WWII Remington 1903A3 03-A3 .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1943

Lot # 1244 (Sale Order: 242 of 384)

WWII Remington 1903A3 03-A3 .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1943

This Remington Model 1903A3 was made in 1943, it has been rebuilt and refinished. This 03-A3 is in Good shape and still looks impressive for a 80+ year old military bolt action rifle. This 1903 has nice Remington markings on both the receiver and the 1943 dated barrel. There are a few interesting markings on the stock, showing on the right side of the stock above the trigger and on the grip. This 1903 has strong mechanics, a nice parkerized finish and a well preserved wood stock. This Remington 1903A3 will make a fine addition to your military or historical collection. WWII Remington 1903A4 03-A4 Sniper M84 Scope .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1943

Lot # 1246 (Sale Order: 244 of 384)

WWII Remington 1903A4 03-A4 Sniper M84 Scope .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1943

Our Assessment: When the United States Military entered World War II in 1941, there was not a single sniper rifle in military inventory. All the sniper rifles developed for use during World War I had long since been disposed of. On the eastern Front, German and Soviet troops had deployed thousands of sniper rifles to great effect. The British and Canadians had resurrected World War I-vintage sniper rifles and were using them to good effect in Africa. U.S. forces were in need of a new sniper rifle and the U.S. Army’s Ordnance Department decided that a sniper rifle could be made quickly based on the Model 1903A3 rifle that was just beginning to come off the production lines at Remington. By the end of 1943, the new Model 1903A4 sniper rifle began to reach front line troops. The new sniper rifle was essentially a modified Model 1903A3 infantry rifle. 1903-A4 receivers are marked "MODEL 03-A3" so that any rifle rejected as a 1903A4 Sniper could be used as a service rifle. WWII Remington Sniper rifles are highly valued by collectors due to their relatively low production numbers and their contribution to the war effort. This Remington Model 1903-A4 Sniper Rifle has deep Remington markings on the receiver and barrel as well as small Remington "R" stampings on the bolt handle and other small parts. Its receiver markings are offset to read them with a scope base installed. This rifle is in 1903-A4 sniper configuration and has the correct serial number to fall within the 1903-A4 serial number ranges. It is topped with an M84 scope. The M84 was mounted on a small number of 1903A4 Sniper Rifles that were Arsenal Rebuilt during the 1950s and 1960s, a number of which saw duty in Vietnam. This a good looking 1903A4 Sniper to add to your collection.

Eddystone 1917 American Enfield .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1917-1919

Lot # 1249 (Sale Order: 247 of 384)

Eddystone 1917 American Enfield .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1917-1919

Our Assessment: The UK urgently needed rifles during WWI and could not produce enough. Contracts for the new Pattern 1914 (P14) Rifle were placed with arms companies in the United States. The rifle was chambered in .303 for convenience of supply. Winchester, Remington and Eddystone Arsenal (a subsidiary of Remington) produced the P14 chambered in .303 British. When the U.S. entered WWI, it had a similar need for rifles. Rather than re-tool the Pattern 14 factories to produce the Model 1903 Springfield, the P14 was modified to accept the U.S. .30-06 cartridge. Remington Arms Co. altered the P14 design for the .30-06. The new rifle was formally adopted as the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, Model of 1917.This example is an Eddystone Model 1917, made between 1917 and 1919, it has been rebuilt and refinished. The WWII era High Standard barrel appears to have been installed during the rebuild. It has nice markings on the nose of the stock, bolt handle, receiver and other metal parts. This bolt action rifle is chambered for .30-06 Springfield and remains in Very Nice condition. This 1917 has a well preserved wood stock, a great bore, and strong mechanics that should keep you smiling at the range. This well preserved U.S. Military bolt action rifle would go well in any historical collection. Please see our photos, good luck and happy bidding!

Make: Eddystone Arsenal; a Subsidiary of Remington

Model: 1917, American Enfield

Payments were stopped once WWI started. The 1903 has a strong reliable action that served the Army for over thirty years in two world wars. The 1903A3 is an improved version of the 1903 rifle that was introduced in 1942. The most significant change was the switch to a receiver bridge-mounted rear aperture sight. This Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 was made in 1913, its barrel is dated 1919, it has been rebuilt and refinished and it includes a sight protector. This 1903 still looks impressive for a 100+ year old military bolt action rifle. This 1903 has nice Rock Island markings on both the receiver and the 1919 dated barrel. There are a few interesting markings on the stock, most are faded. This 1903 has a Good bore, strong mechanics, and a well preserved wood stock. This RIA 1903 will make a fine addition to your military or historical collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Rock Island Arsenal 1903 RIA .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle MFD 1919

Lot # 1251 (Sale Order: 249 of 384)

Rock Island Arsenal 1903 RIA .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle MFD 1919

This Rock Island Model 1903 was made in 1919. We don't know its service life but it was probably put to good use during WWII. The rifle has been rebuilt and refinished. The rifle has a 1942 dated Springfield barrel installed.
