WWII Smith Corona 1903A3 03-A3 .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle 1943
Lot # 1253 (Sale Order: 251 of 384)
Our Assessment: When the US Army was looking for a rifle design to replace the 1898 Krag rifle, they looked directly at the Spanish Model 1893 Mauser. This was due to the fact that the performance of the Model 1893 Mauser was far superior than that of the 1898 Krag during the Spanish-American War. The Model 1903 is basically a redesigned Mauser clone. A U.S. Patent Court eventually found that the U.S. Army had violated Mauser's patents and required the U.S. Army to pay the German Mauser manufacturers patent royalties. Payments were stopped once WWI started. The 1903 has a strong reliable action that served the Army for over thirty years in two world wars. The 1903A3 is an improved version of the 1903 rifle that was introduced in 1942. The most significant change was the switch to a receiver bridge-mounted rear aperture sight. This Smith Corona Model 1903A3 was made in 1943, it has been rebuilt and refinished. This 03-A3 is in Nice shape and still looks impressive for a 80+ year old military bolt action rifle. This 1903 has nice Smith Corona markings on both the receiver and the 1943 dated barrel. There are a few interesting markings on the stock, most are still clear and are on the left side of the wood above the trigger. This 1903 has strong mechanics, a nice parkerized finish and a well preserved wood stock. This Smith Corona 1903A3 will make a fine addition to your military or historical collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Bore Condition: The 4-groove bore has deep rifling. Some of the rifling is fouled with erosion. The bore is light gray with dark patches near the center. The bore shows erosion and an M.E. of 1. In this writer's opinion and for the age, the bore rates a 4 out of 10.Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950's.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The metal shows some scuffs and scrapes. The screw heads are sharp, some show light tool marks. Most markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

B.A. Dawson Custom Springfield Armory Model 1903 7x57 Mauser Sporting Rifle
Lot # 1262 (Sale Order: 260 of 384)
Our Assessment: When the US Army was looking for a rifle design to replace the 1898 Krag rifle, they looked directly at the Spanish Model 1893 Mauser. This Springfield Armory 1903 was made back in 1929. It has since been turned into a beautiful sporting rifle. It has been relined and rechambered to shoot 5x57 Mauser. The receiver has been installed with a Griffen & Howe mount and a new scope clearing safety has been installed. The bolt handle has also been reprofiled. All of the metal parts have been refinished a lovely matte blued and the barreled action now rests in perhaps the most eye catching feature, the stock. The wood work is excellent and the stock is lovely. The wood has nice grain, the checkering is well done, and the steel appointments set it over the top. This a lovely sporting rifle to add to your collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was originally produced back in 1944. It was later arsenal converted to an M1D Sniper rifle. The Springfield Armory M1D barrel is marked properly with the correct date and stampings on the top & side of the barrel. The rifle’s action uses all Springfield parts. This M1D comes with an M84 scope assembly, T37 flash hider, and a leather cheek piece. The rifle is in Very Good Plus condition. Here is some M1D information from Scott Duff (who literally wrote the book on the M1 Garand) over at www.scott-duff.com : "As all M1D rifles were rebuilt rifles, the receiver may be of any manufacture and of any serial number produced prior to the date of the rebuild. The same applies to the individual components, any part made prior to the date of the rebuild is correct. All M1D barrels were made by Springfield Armory. The earliest observed M1D barrel is dated 5-51. M1D barrels have been counterfeited and merit careful examination. Nearly all M1D barrels were stamped with drawing number D7312555. M1D barrels MANUFACTURED through the fall of 1952 had the drawing number stamped on the top, underneath the rear hand guard. M1D barrels MANUFACTURED after the fall of 1952 had the drawing number stamped on the right side, adjacent to the date. The total number of service grade rifles converted by the military to M1D configuration is unknown. However, it is certain that well over 10,000 were converted. No less than 5,000 M1Ds were sold or given to foreign nations. In 1993 and 1994 over 6,000 M1D rifles were deemed obsolete and destroyed under orders from the Secretary of the Army. Beginning in 1995, M1D rifles were sold by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM), the forerunner to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) to qualified individuals".

Martially Marked US WWI Winchester Solid Frame Model 1897 Trench Gun
Lot # 1275 (Sale Order: 273 of 384)
Our Assessment: After observing the Great War for the first three years, it became clear to the U.S. that serious close-range firepower was needed in trench warfare. The pre-existing Winchester Model 1897 was modified by adding a perforated steel heat shield over the barrel which protected the hand of the user from the barrel when it became over-heated, and an adapter with bayonet lug for affixing an M1917 bayonet. They were so effective and brutal in combat that the German high command once announced they would execute any US soldier captured with one in his possession. The 1897 Trench Gun was also durable enough that it would go on to see service in the second World War all the way through to the Gulf War.This example was produced Ca. 1919 and has correct features for a Trench Gun. It is martially marked, like other observed WWI 1897 Trench Guns, and there has been no end of speculation among collectors as to the reason for some being martially marked and others, not. This writer prefers the theory presented by Bruce Canfield in his book "Complete Guide to United States Military Combat Shotguns", that guns which were issued were inspected and marked, while guns which were not issued did not receive the markings. The end of WWI came as a shock to nearly everyone. At the time, most of the Allied powers believed that the war would continue for at least a few more years. The German offensive Operation Michael had just been halted and the Second Battle of the Marne, the first successful Allied offensive, was just starting. No one would guess that the war would end less than 6 months later. Consequently, there were likely many Trench Guns which had been produced and/or delivered which were never issued and simply remained in the government's inventory. Though this one was apparently issued, it remains a high condition example of this military shotgun which is more than 100 years old. The gun still has the great majority of its original finish, a nice bore, and strong mechanics. The stock has been replaced, but this was not uncommon with the original thin-wrist stocks easily cracking. This would later be addressed by increasing the thickness of the wrist (like this replacement).

OCT. 16. 1900. DeC. 25. 06. JULY. 5. 10." followed by "12 GA.". The chamber is marked "CYL". The top of the barrel is marked with a "WP" proof mark, found again on the top of the receiver. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The action bar is marked "MODEL 1897 / -WINCHESTER- / TRADE MARK ReG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF.". The left of the bayonet lug is marked "PAT.
