Restored Pre-War Winchester Deluxe Model 41, .410 Bolt Action, C&R

Lot # 1283 (Sale Order: 281 of 384)

Restored Pre-War Winchester Deluxe Model 41, .410 Bolt Action MFD 1920-1941 C&R

Our Assessment: Only about 25,000 of these shotguns were produced from 1920 to 1941. Most production ceased in 1934 and all guns were unserialized. Being produced during the great depression, not many of these were produced and they are somewhat of a Winchester Shotgun rarity. This gun was beautifully restored and upgraded. The tags we still see on it indicate it came from the renown Peter and Patty Murray Collection, though we disagree with them that this factory blue… Regardless, it is a very attractive and relatively scarce shotgun.

Make: Winchester

Model: 41

Serial Number: NSN

Year of Manufacture: 1920-1941

Gauge: .410

Action Type: Single Shot Bolt Action shotgun

Barrel Length: 24"

Choke: FULL

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a bead at the muzzle and a notch rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is higher grade (likely upgraded) checkered Walnut, with a hard rubber Winchester plate and grip cap. The stock rates in about excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Restoredl

Bore Condition: The bore is generally bright with some erosion near the muzzle. In this writer's opinion, this bore rates a 7 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows only a little thinning at edges and a ding or two on the barrel. Mild erosion can barely be seen under this finish. The markings are a bit light but legible. Overall, this shotgun rates in about excellent condition as restored.

Ithaca Gun Co. Model 37 Featherlight M&P 12 GA Factory Riot Shotgun

Lot # 1284 (Sale Order: 282 of 384)

Ithaca Gun Co. Model 37 Featherlight Military & Police (M&P) 12 GA 20" Factory FULL Riot Shotgun

Our Assessment: The Ithaca 37 was designed by the company to compete with the Winchester Model 12. The gun was based on one of John Browning's patents which was used to create the Remington Model 17, the patent did not expire until 1932 which delayed the shotgun's introduction. Remington discontinued the Model 17 in 1933 which finally allowed Ithaca to move forward with their project. Since the Model 17 had improvements made to it which were also held by a patent owned by Remington, they were designed by John Pederson, until 1936 the project was further delayed. Finally, the Remington patents expired and Ithaca applied patented improvements made by Harry Howland. The new shotgun was finally released in 1937, hence the designation Model 37. The Model 37 proved an extremely successful shotgun, and was eventually even adopted for use by the U.S. military and numerous law enforcement agencies. The gun was called the Featherlight when it was introduced, although its weight was not significantly lighter than most other shotguns. The Model 37 was produced in a number of configurations, and this one of the more popular for home defense or law enforcement. Its 20" barrel is fast-handling and easily maneuvered. Combine the 37's notably smooth action and ability to slam-fire with an 8-round capacity (7+1) and you have a potent combination that can put plenty of lead on target. In addition to being a gun suitable for defense, it is a nice example of the Featherlight M&P model, great to add to an Ithaca collection. Please see our pictures and good luck!

There is a mark in the wood on the top of the wrist. There are scattered light handling marks. The LOP measures 14 1/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some scattered light wear. This stock rates in Fine overall condition.

1919 Winchester Model 1912 12 GA 30" Takedown Pump Action Shotgun

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1912 was an improved version of John Moses Browning's groundbreaking design, the Model 1897 pump action shotgun. While similar in most aspects to Browning's design, several improvements were made by Winchester engineer Thomas Crossley Johnson. Johnson's most notable improvement was to alter the action. It was around 1919 when the model 1912 was shortened to model 12. Produced in just about every type of shotgun from semi-automatics to pump actions and everything in between, the 12 gauge is the shotgun of choice for big game, turkey, waterfowl, upland, and small game hunters. It's also the #1 choice for home defense as well as for military and law enforcement use. This Model 1912 is in Pretty good shape, showing honest wear. EARLY Winchester Model 1897 Solid Frame Riot Shotgun Lettered "To-Russ"

Lot # 1293 (Sale Order: 291 of 384)

EARLY Winchester Model 1897 Solid Frame Riot Shotgun Lettered "To-Russ" MFD 1901

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1897 was designed by the legendary gunmaker John Moses Browning for Winchester. Browning improved upon his earlier Model 1893 design, with a stronger receiver that could sustain the pressure of smokeless powder shells. The 1897 came in dozens of configurations (calibers, grades and barrel lengths), making them a fun collector's interest. 1897 Riot Guns are of particular interest, as they are certainly Rarer than "bird guns" and almost certainly have a more colorful past. early 1897 Riot Guns will letter as originally being produced with a long barrel, going "To: Russ" and converted to Riot before ever leaving the factory. This explains the duplicate choke markings and is confirmed by this letter. This an honest, early example of a gun with a story we wish we could hear it tell.

Make: Winchester

Model: 1897 Solid Frame Riot Gun

Serial Number: C94083

Year of Manufacture: CA. 1901

The choke marking was restruck at the factory, as was practice, from FULL to CYL. The bottom of the receiver at the front is marked "C / 94083". The action bar is marked -"WINCHESTER / MODEL 1897".

Barrel Length: 20 3/8" (20" nominal)

Choke: Fixed Cylinder Bore

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are wood with a grooved slide-handle secured by three screws at the rear, round-bottom semi-pistol grip, straight comb and smooth steel buttplate. Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 40% of its metal finish and has wear consistent with a guard / riot intended use shotgun. The finish is thinning at most edges, with some scratches and dings to the flats and scattered erosion. The color has begun to drift towards patina, especially on the frame and tube. 1925 Winchester Model 1897 12 GA 20" Takedown Pump Action Shotgun

Our Assessment: The Winchester 1897 has served millions of Americans as the go-to shotgun for the home, trench, field or cowboy shooting gun cart. It is one of the most produced American shotguns, and for good reason. The action is strong and reliable, designed by John Moses Browning, it takes down easily, yet functions simply and indefinitely. During the first 12 years of production, Winchester made 37 major and 52 minor changes to the Model 1897 culminating in the "e" guns (as this one is) and a prize in any Winchester collection. This gun has survived the years, almost 100 of them now, without being chopped or abused. It is an honest and well used shotgun that has been cared for. The bore is bright and the action is still tight for you to take this home and make it your new go-to. Our Assessment: This a pre-war Winchester Model 42 .410 bore pump-action shotgun from 1939. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin the Model 12. Many consider the Model 42 the best .410 bore pump shotgun ever made. It was in production for 30 years and was discontinued in 1963 when the company restructured and cut costs resulting in the "Pre-64" and "Post-64" terms in the collecting community. The gun is in Nice condition, showing wear consistent with light and responsible use. General Curtis e. LeMay's Winchester Model 40 12 GA Competition Shotgun, Beautifully engraved

Lot # 1296 (Sale Order: 294 of 384)

General Curtis e. LeMay's Winchester Model 40 12 GA 24" Competition Shotgun, Beautifully engraved

Our Assessment: In the 1930s the semi-automatic shotgun was a proven design with other brands having solid financial success selling them. Winchester was inspired and got to work on their Model 40, their second semi-automatic shotgun. The Browning patents had expired and Winchester was free to use a charging handle on their shotguns. With high hopes, Winchester released the gun in 1940. Many of the design elements of the Model 1911SL were incorporated into this design, and because of this, the Model 40 suffers many of the same shortcomings. By 1941, Winchester stopped production of the design due to the numerous design flaws and sent out a recall. Some customers took advantage of this, but instead of receiving a new Model 40, they were reportedly given Model 12s along with letters asking that the Model 40 be completely forgotten. The brief production run resulted in approximately 12,000 units, many of which were turned in to Winchester and subsequently destroyed. This one has lived quite a life. It was purchased by General Curtis e. LeMay in 1940. When he was selected to command the U.S. Air Forces in Europe, he brought the gun with him to Wiesbaden Germany. While in Wiesbaden, General LeMay and other officers formed the Wiesbaden Gun Club and Gun Shop. At the Club, a defector from the Soviet zone by the name of H. Müller was employed as an engraver. Mr. Müller took the rather pedestrian Model 40 to new heights and engraved full coverage game scenes on the receiver. The left side of the receiver is adorned with game birds and hunting dogs in a wooded area with rolling hills in the background. The bottom-left corner of the left side of the receiver is engraved with a broken fence post that bears the artist's signature "H.Müller". The right side of the receiver is similarly marked with hunting scenes depicting two hunters and waterfowl. The bottom of the receiver is engraved with a crest bearing the distinguished Generals initials "CeL". The stocks were upgraded to checkered French walnut by the club and a rib was also added. General LeMay seems to have had better luck with this design than most, it was his skeet gun and he shot numerous matches with it. It was with him at the 1955 Nebraska State Skeet Championship. At this Championship, the rib blew off and was subsequently replaced with the Simmons Specialties rib that it currently wears. General Curtis e. LeMay's service includes duties as commander in Chief, Strategic Air Command, from October 1948 to July 1957 and Chief of Staff, United States Air Force, from July 1961 to January 1965. He was a pioneer in formations and bombing techniques that were used throughout the European theater and were later used by the B-29 Super Fortress in the Pacific. His service earned him numerous awards and decorations, not just from his own government, but countries all around the world.

The Four Kachina's, Art Daggers by: Willie Rigney, Jim Ence, Billy Mace Imel & Gary Blanchard

Lot # 1297 (Sale Order: 295 of 384)

The Four Kachina's, Art Daggers by: Willie Rigney, Jim Ence, Billy Mace Imel & Gary Blanchard

Three Kachina knives were originally Commissioned by J.W. Bailey at the Anaheim Knife show in 1985, Gary Blanchard would collaborate with three knife makers to produce these fantastic daggers. eric Meyers, a world famous knife collector, then bought the three knives & contracted Gary Blanchard to complete the series with a fourth knife. These four handmade art knives then lived in Switzerland, moved to New York, moved again to a ranch in Michigan & then finally came back to California where it all started. The Four Kachina's were inspired by the ancestral spirits in Pueblo mythology. The original concept & design was by Gary Blanchard, he asked Willie Rigney, Jim Ence & Billy Mace Imel to work on the project. The plan was to create four custom art daggers with a three dimensional Kachina or Social Dancer carved within the center portion of the blade. Gary was told by the steel company that the process of carving into the steel was impossible, yet here they are. Gary did all the carvings with specific requirements for the shape & detail. This series only had four knives painstakingly hand crafted, each dagger is a one of a kind. Over 2000 combined man-hours to complete the four knives, from 1986 to 1992. Here is a brief description of each custom art dagger. #1: The White Buffalo Dance, the first knife in the series by Willie Rigney & Gary Blanchard. Using 440c, guard & pommel in blued steel & handle of fluted walrus fossil with 24K gold, gold bow string & the small sea shells are individually carved from a cameo shell. #2: The eagle Kachina, by Jime ence & Gary Blanchard. Blade of damascus & blued steel fixtures, the balls of the guard & pommel are ivory as is the handle with 24K gold wire & lizard skin. The embellishment took 480 hours & was completed in 1988. The graceful flowing wings were accomplished by carving each feather out of ivory & inlaying them on at a time. Headdress is made from turquoise. The beak & bells are solid gold & the necklace is carved from ivory & turquoise, then strung on wire. #3: The Sun Kachina, by Billy Mace Imel & Gary Blanchard. With blued steel blade & fixtures, handle is black buffalo horn as are the balls of the guard & the pommel. embellishment of the knife & fixtures took 537 man hours to complete in 1990. This was the first project where Gary used his ceramic resin process, used in the headdress instead of red coral to get the needed detail. Other inlays are turquoise, black buffalo horn, red coral & 24K gold. The beaded bands include over 1500 beads, all were individually hand sanded & fitted into place. #4: The Broad Faced Kachina, the final Kachina by Gary Blanchard. The surfaces have been grounded to look as though it had been flint knapped. The handle & other portions of the guard & pommel are made of elk horn. Within the blade, the three dimensional figure is overlaid with colored sand, inlays consist of sand, elk horn, sterling silver & 24K gold. The making of this knife took 560 hours to complete in 1992. each knife is beautifully preserved & in outstanding condition, showing only a few insignificant handling marks. A fifth blade is included, this blank example blade was made by Billy Mace Imel & shows you what a Kachina blade would look like before the carving & embellishment. This lot comes with several items of Provenance, including printed copies of letters by Gary Blanchard & Billy Mace Imel. There is also an outline of the history of the Four Kachina's. The "White Buffalo Dance'' was featured in Blade Magazine December 1987. The "eagle Kachina" was featured in Knives Illustrated Spring 1988. The "Sun Kachina" featured in a 2014 Japanese Knife Magazine. There is also an included Blade Magazine showing an advertisement of the Four Kachinas. There are many letters & print outs describing the history of these artisan knives. This set comes with a wooden display box with a red velvet interior. The box is in nice condition, showing light to moderate wear. But wait, there's more. Also included is the hardcover book "Modern Custom Knives, The Great Collections" by David Darom. This collectors book features one of the owners of the Four Kachina's. Also included is a custom made glass & wood display cabinet with fitted acrylic slots to hold each dagger firmly in place. The cabinet has a built in lights, motor & battery pack, the knives rotate in this very nice display. The wood shows light marks & remains in Fine overall condition. These master crafted art daggers belong in a museum. This a Rare once in a lifetime opportunity to own four of arguably the most significant handmade knives in the world.

A.H. Fox Model A Grade Pre-Savage 12 GA Double Barrel Shotgun

Lot # 1301 (Sale Order: 299 of 384)

A.H. Fox Model A Grade Pre-Savage 12 GA 28" IM/M Double Barrel Shotgun, MFD Ca. 1910

Our Assessment: Ansley Fox was one of the earliest American innovators with internal hammer double guns. In 1894, at the age of 19, he was issued a patent on a system of cocking the internal hammers of a break-action gun using leverage from the barrels with his design actually containing nineteen patentable features, according to the U.S. Patent office. Fox would continue on, making it his life's work to produce "The finest gun in the world" (as well as the finest car in the world and a few other manufacturing ventures). He even gained the praise of Theodore Roosevelt who wrote to Mr. Fox in a letter "The double-barreled shotgun has come, and I really think it is the most beautiful gun I have ever seen. I am exceedingly proud of it. I am almost ashamed to take it to Africa and expose it to the rough usage it will receive. But now that I have it, I could not possibly make up my mind to leave it behind. I am extremely proud that I am to have such a beautiful bit of American workmanship with me". The A.H. Fox Gun Co. would continue producing shotguns of various grades and chambered for various gauges through the late 1920s, when they fell victim to the Great Depression and were acquired by Savage Arms. This example is a 12 gauge A Grade, produced in 1910, quite early for an A.H. Fox. Today, A.H. Fox shotguns are quite collectible. As Fox's reputation was built on quality, their success didn't necessarily mean that a huge number of guns were made. Please see our photos and good luck in your bidding!

Grade II Browning 12 Ga. B-S/S BSS Sidelock SxS Double Barrel Shotgun

Lot # 1302 (Sale Order: 300 of 384)

Sharp Grade II Browning 12 Ga. B-S/S BSS Sidelock SxS Double Barrel Shotgun, MFD 1984

Our Assessment: The Browning Side by Side or BSS as it's known is famous for reliability and longevity. They are almost impossible to wear out. Browning BSS sidelock was offered from 1983-1987. even though these Holland & Holland-pattern side-by-sides were very well made, they weren't big sellers. This example was MANUFACTURED in 1984 and is in Fine-Plus condition. It has double triggers and the safety engages automatically upon opening the gun. It balances just ahead of the barrel hinge and points well with its 26" barrels. This would make a great field gun for the larger upland birds and a great cowboy action shooting side by side, if you were willing to subject this nice shotgun to such hard use. Please see our photos and good luck!
