Legiers engraved Diana Grade Browning Superposed 12 Ga. Over Under Shotgun

Lot # 1378 (Sale Order: 376 of 384)

Beautiful 1963 Legiers engraved 28" Diana Grade Browning Superposed 12 Ga. O/U Over Under Shotgun

Our Assessment: After the death of John Browning, his son Val would complete an over under shotgun with a single selective trigger and ejectors; the Superposed was introduced in 1931, it was an instant success; the factory did not produce any of these shotguns during WWII but just after the war ended, the factory came roaring back to life, creating some of their best product to date. This a post-war FN produced Diana Grade from 1963, in about Very Good-Fine condition, retaining about 95% of its metal finish. Only sixty five of these were made in Diana Grade! The barrels are 28" vent ribbed and choked Full over Modified. Unfortunately, there is a mechanical issue with the trigger that will need to be addressed. The bores are bright and the mechanics are crisp over 50 years since this work of art left the factory. The engraving was done by Legiers. Diana grade guns were only allowed to be engraved by the best artisans employed. Despite the mechanical issue, this a beautiful shotgun and would be a fantastic addition for anyone who fancies themselves a true collector. Please see our photos and good luck!

Make: FN, In Belgium, for Browning

Model: Superposed Diana Grade

Serial Number: 11387S3

Year of Manufacture: 1963 (https://www.browning.com/support/date-your-firearm/superposed-shotgun.html)

Action Type: Over / Under, Top Break Shotgun with ejectors & Single Selective Inertia Trigger

Markings: The right of the forend latch, the latch spring-loaded release, and the cocking lever lifter are all marked with the serial number. The top tang is marked "11387 S3". There are proofs on the water table. The receiver has Diana Grade engraving done by engraver Legiers. The receiver has scroll relief engraving with game scenes. The right side of the receiver is signed "LEGIERS". The left of the top barrel is marked "BROWNING ARMS COMPANY ST LOUIS Mo. & MONTREAL P.Q. / MADE IN BELGIUM". The right side of the top barrel is marked "SPECIAL STEEL – 12 GA – SHELLS 2 3/4" / PATENTS No 2.203.378 – 2.233.86". At the breech on the left, the top barrel is marked "*" and the bottom is marked "**" with the serial number. There are inspector marks on the bottom of the monoblock between the lugs.

Barrel Length: 28" with a vent rib.

Choke: Fixed Full over Modified

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a white plastic bead at the muzzle and there is a smaller white alignment bead at the midway point. The top of the rib is checkered for glare reduction.

Overall, the stocks are in about Fine-Plus condition and would rate higher if not for the small split.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion. In this writer's opinion, the bores rate 10/10.

The French gray portions have some areas of discoloration and oxidation, the most noticeable areas are on the trigger guard and safety. There is a notable ding on the left edge of the rib at about the midway point. There are some spots of discoloration on the bright portions at the muzzles. There is some faint thinning on the edges at the muzzles and rib. The markings are clear. The screw heads are sharp to lightly used with strong slots. Overall, this shotgun is in about Very Good-Fine condition. (See Mechanics)

Mechanics: There is an issue that causes the trigger to reset when it is released after the first pull. This not by design. The safety does NOT set automatically when the action is opened but functions properly when manually set. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun comes in a Browning hard case.

Krieghoff Classic "Big Five" .470 Nitro express Side by Side Double Rifle

Lot # 1381 (Sale Order: 379 of 384)

Krieghoff Classic "Big Five" Double Rifle .470 Nitro express 23 5/8" Side by Side Double Rifle

Our Assessment: H. Krieghoff GmbH – known worldwide as "Krieghoff" – began as a single vision to build the ideal hunting gun, a Drilling. Krieghoff's evolution from its 1886 founding as Sempert and Krieghoff to one of the top manufacturers of fine hunting and sporting arms currently spans five generations, each with an innovative eye to the future. Reflecting its roots, Krieghoff continues to build and offer hunting arms, such as drillings, rifles including double rifles and shotguns including a bespoke line of true sidelock arms. With their pure elegance, first-class craftsmanship and proven technology, these masterpieces of the art of gunmaking fall into the same category as the highly coveted "best" English or Italian guns. This one of their bespoke rifles, the Classic "Big Five" Double Rifle. Nothing epitomizes the skills and experience needed for a successful hunt like taking game with a classic double rifle. Prized by dangerous game hunters for years, the classic double rifle provides the security and reliability when each shot really counts. The Krieghoff Classic "Big Five" Double Rifle combines the heritage of the traditional side-by-side and the sophistication of the most modern design and manufacturing technology. Krieghoff's master gunmakers combined both traditional wisdom and innovative ideas to build a rifle that provides the ultimate in safety and reliability and a wide range of features that ensure smooth, quick, and accurate shooting. In addition to the superb handling of the rifle, a most important feature is the manual cocking device, which is located on the top tang, in the position usually occupied by a conventional safety. It allows carrying the rifle fully loaded with the hammers uncocked – the safest position since there is no chance of an accidental discharge. Craig Boddington, an accomplished hunter and knowledgeable writer remarks: "After using it in the field, I am increasingly impressed with your cocking device versus a traditional safety. Great rifle, and of course it performed wonderfully."This one has seen little use and looks absolutely beautiful. The bores in its nominal 24" barrel set are nice and the mechanics are Safari ready. If you have the stones to chase the African "Big Five" (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) then you are certainly ballsy enough to drop a bid! Please see our photos and good luck!

Remington Baikal MR221 .45-70 Government 24" SxS Double Rifle

Lot # 1385 (Sale Order: 383 of 384)

Remington Baikal MR221 .45-70 Government 24" SxS Double Rifle

Our Assessment: The double rifle has a long hunting history. When taking large, dangerous game and predators, a rapid follow-up shot can be the difference not only between a humane kill, but between the life and death of the hunter. The double rifle allows this without the need to manually cycle an action or to trust a semi-automatic design, which really only became reliable enough for such an application in the mid-20th century. This example is a fairly recently produced gun, made in Russia by Baikal in 2008. The consignor affirms that the firing pins have been factory replaced. It is chambered for .45-70 Government, a fairly popular big-game cartridge here in the US, and one which has seen something of a revival lately due to improvements in projectiles and loads for the cartridge. This rifle would be a nice addition to any collection and shows little sign of use. Please see our photos and good luck in your bidding!
