Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Westerner G7045 .264 Win. Mag. 26" Rifle & Scope

Lot # 1205 (Sale Order: 203 of 384)

Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Westerner G7045 .264 Win. Mag. 26" Rifle & Scope

Our Assessment: This a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .264 Winchester Magnum and made in 1963. The rifle is the "Westerner" style and was part of the introduction of Winchester's belted magnum cartridges in the late '50s and early '60 with less recoil and higher velocities than the others. With its high velocity and excellent ballistics coefficient, the .264 Win Mag is not only suitable for any game animal in North America, it makes a fine long-range target rifle as well. This a classic Winchester rifle in a great hunting cartridge that is ready to bag some game. It is also a desirable pre-1964 Model 70 in a desirable configuration, perfect to add to a collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Nice Pre-64 1946 Winchester Model 70 .300 Savage 24" Cloverleaf Tang Rifle

Lot # 1206 (Sale Order: 204 of 384)

Nice Pre-64 1946 Winchester Model 70 .300 Savage 24" Cloverleaf Tang Bolt Action Rifle

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years; reliable, robust, and accurate, it is one of the benchmarks by which all bolt action rifles are measured. It has more than earned its nickname of "The Riflemans Rifle", a true icon. This a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .300 Savage and made in 1946. The .300 Savage was ahead of its time, being quite similar to the .308 Winchester cartridge. It needed to be shorter than the .30-06 in order to fit the receiver of the Savage Model 99 lever action rifle, but would also be chambered in the Winchester Model 70. This rifle shows wear consistent with light use and looks great for its age. The bore has been re-lined, having strong rifling and infrequent minor erosion. As a fairly scarce chambering, this will likely see interest from Winchester collectors. It will also still make for a great deer rifle for at least another lifetime.

Make: Winchester

Model: 70

Serial Number: 55142

Year of Manufacture: 1946

Caliber: .300 Savage

Action Type: Bolt Action

Barrel Length: 24"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a "U"-notch elevator sight dovetailed to a boss at the rear of the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation. The chamber ring is drilled, tapped and filled for an optic (none present), but the bridge is not. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with a pistol grip, straight comb, checkered steel buttplate and sling studs front and rear. The stock has some scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are some spots of finish loss and a tiny loss at the toe. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures 13 5/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scattered wear, mostly around the edges and at the heel. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore has been re-lined. The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is infrequent minor erosion in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at some edges. There is some finish loss at the muzzle. There are a few little spots of discoloration from previous oxidation. There are some little nicks and scratches. The bolt knob has light handling wear and the action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.

This a Custom vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 in Carbine configuration that is chambered in .300 Savage. This inspired by a fairly scarce variant, the original Carbines made up about 1.25% of Pre-64 Model 70 production and there were only 362 of any configuration chambered for the .300 Savage. Originally developed for the Savage Model 99, the .300 Savage could push a 150 grain bullet to about 2,600 fps, fairly close to the more modern .308 Winchester. This custom rifle has been refinished and looks great. As a pre-64 Model 70 in high condition, with a great bore it will be a great shooter and a very neat addition to your collection. This example is chambered in the venerable .300 H&H Magnum. It's a fairly uncommon configuration for a Winchester Model 70, with all Bull Guns constituting less than half a percent of production. Scarce Pre-War 1937 Winchester Model 70 G7015C 7x57mm Cloverleaf Tang Rifle

Lot # 1212 (Sale Order: 210 of 384)

Scarce Pre-War 1937 Winchester Model 70 G7015C 7x57mm 24" Cloverleaf Tang Bolt Action Rifle

Our Assessment: This a lovely Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 made in 1937. A fairly scarce variant, it is chambered for 7x57mm Mauser, one of about 1,400 of the model chambered for this cartridge. This early smokeless cartridge was developed in the 1890s, but remains in production today and is popular for use in hunting small to medium game. It is quite versatile with a fairly flat trajectory, modest recoil, and a wide variety of loadings are typically available. The rifle itself is in Fine condition with wear primarily in the stock, consistent with responsible use in the field. The stock has Super-Grade style sling mounts, so it may be a replacement. The bore and the mechanics are strong. This should still prove to be a great hunting rifle for the lucky winner. That said, as a pre-64 Model 70 in high condition and a scarce variant, it will also make a great addition for the collector. Good luck and happy bidding!

Make: Winchester

Model: 70

The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with pistol grip, straight comb, checkered steel buttplate and Super-Grade sling mounts front and rear. The stock has some scattered compressions, nicks and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8" the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear and well defined checkering. The stocks rate in Very Good overall condition as not original to the gun.

US 1968 Palma Trophy Match Winchester Model 70 .308 Win. Rifle

Lot # 1214 (Sale Order: 212 of 384)

Our Assessment: The Palma Trophy Match is one of, if not the most prestigious long-range rifle competitions in the world. Its history goes back to 1873, when the first International Long Range Rifle match was hosted by the Creedmoor Range in Queens, New York. Teams from Ireland the United States participated in this first match with a second match held in 1874 at the Dollymount Range in Ireland, with the United States winning both matches. The National Rifle Association of America organized the first Palma Trophy Match in 1876 to celebrate the American Centennial, commissioning a massive seven and a half foot trophy from Tiffany’s for $1,500 (nearly $40,000 in 2022!). The name was taken from the trophy, a replica of a Roman standard which had "PALMA" replacing "SPQR" across the top of the standard, Latin for "victory/valour".The matches consist of strings of fire at distances of 800, 900 and 1,000 yards. The first matches were fired with muzzle-loading rifles and there were simple overall weight and trigger weight restrictions. Matches were held intermittently with the rules for the 1901 match updated to require each nation’s team to use a domestic military rifle and in 1968 the rules were updated again to require that the team’s rifles be identical guns provided by the host nation. In 1968, 1971 and 1976, the United States hosted the Palma Trophy Match and selected the Winchester Model 70 for the rifle to be used by all competitors. These rifles were not standard Winchester Target models, but rather rifles specially built by Winchester’s Custom Shop. The Palma Trophy Match Model 70 was never cataloged and never offered for sale to the public, only provided to the teams at the U.S. hosted Palma matches. The barrels used for the 1968 rifles were longer, heavier profiled and had counter-bored muzzles. Their actions and the chamber area of the barrels were glass-bedded to the stocks with the remainder of the barrels free-floating. Intriguingly, their receiver’s are slotted for clip-loading and the bolts were factory-jeweled. All of the observed 1968 Palma Trophy Match Model 70 rifles have been in the 86878 to 868733 serial range with a minimum of 40 rifles necessary to provide each of the shooters with a separate rifle, which strongly indicates that the rifles were all consecutively serial numbered. This example of the 1968 Palma Trophy Match rifle is outstanding. It should be noted that the United States hosted at Camp Perry in 1968 and also won (as the American team would in each of the three years that the Winchester 70 was selected as the match rifle), though we have not been able to find documentation of whether this individual rifle was used by the American or the visiting Canadian team. The rifle has all of the correct features, markings and falls into the proper serial range of the 1968 Match rifles. This will make a truly exceptional addition to a Winchester collection or a collection of long range competition rifles and, with approximately 60 rifles made for the 1968 Match, an opportunity such as this doesn’t come by every day.

Lot # 1215 (Sale Order: 213 of 384)

1931 Remington Model 8 .32 Rem 22" Semi Automatic Rifle

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 8 was the brainchild of John Moses Browning. Originally patented in 1900, it was the first successful high-powered semi-auto rifle made in the United States–or just about anywhere else, for that matter. It is a long-recoil operated rifle and feeds from a fixed magazine. The model 8 was chambered in four different Remington rimless cartridges, they were the .25, .30, .32, and .35 Remington. They were primarily used by hunters, though some law enforcement agencies adopted them and it was possible to modify them for removable magazines. It was even the preferred rifle of Texas Ranger Frank Hamer who used a customized .35 caliber model with 15-round magazines, and his was one of the two Model 8's known to be at the ambush of Bonnie & Clyde. This example was made in 1931 based on its date code and is chambered in .32 Remington, it is in about Very Good condition. It has some scattered wear that is typical of a sporting rifle of its age. The bore has some wear but the rifling is strong and this can still put lead downrange and holes in game. This the original American semi-auto rifle and something every collector needs! This 1909 produced example is dressed in 8D or "Peerless" engraving and checkered stocks. The rifle has wonderful scroll work on the metal and has a pistol grip instead of a straight grip. Remington always had a pulse for engraving, putting out some of the most beautiful pieces. Not only is this jaw-dropping aesthetically, the parts on the Peerless models also receive more attention with hand polishing and fitting resulting in one of the finest semi-autos money can buy. It was even the preferred rifle of Texas Ranger Frank Hamer who used a customized .35 caliber model with 15-round magazines, and his was one of the two Model 8's known to be at the ambush of Bonnie & Clyde. Thisn't just any Model 8 though, this one of the very Rare U.S. Trials models. In 1921, the Army Infantry School at Fort Benning received 25 Model 8 rifles chambered for .25 Remington. Warfare was evolving at the time, and the U.S. needed rifles to test the viability of a semi-automatic platform. While not suitable for actual combat and not intended for it, the Model 8 rifles were upgraded for developing tactics and military doctrine of a semi-auto rifle. The rifles were then upgraded by Springfield Armory with upgraded sights and a lengthened military style grooved forend with sling swivels. The barrel mounted rear sight was removed and the rear sight is now a Lyman 48 aperture peep sight. The book "The Great Model 8" by John Henwood lists the serial range for these rifles as 42200 to 45737 for known examples. This one is in the range and looks great, a very Rare rifle to enhance any collection!

1911 Remington Model 8D "Peerless" .35 Rem Factory engraved Semi Auto Rifle

Lot # 1220 (Sale Order: 218 of 384)

1911 Remington Model 8D "Peerless" .35 Rem Factory engraved Semi Automatic Rifle

This 1911 produced example is dressed in 8D or "Peerless" engraving and checkered stocks. The rifle has wonderful scroll work on the metal and a straight grip. Remington always had a pulse for engraving, putting out some of the most beautiful pieces. They display a well balanced aesthetic of scroll, border engraving, and blank space that combine for a rifle that is effortlessly refined and elegant. Not only is this jaw-dropping aesthetically, the parts on the Peerless models also receive more attention with hand polishing and fitting resulting in one of the finest semi-autos money can buy. The rarity of factory engraved model 8s as well as this being an early production model will certainly interest Remington and early autoloader collectors. Please see our photos and good luck!

1951 Winchester Model 63 .22 LR 23" Semi Automatic Rifle

Lot # 1224 (Sale Order: 222 of 384)

1951 Winchester Model 63 .22LR 23" Semi Automatic Rifle

Our Assessment: When Winchester came out with their Model 1903 semi-automatic rifle, they chambered it in .22 Winchester Automatic. This was a smokeless powder round with a case slightly larger than a .22 Long cartridge to prevent the use of .22 rimfire ammunition loaded with black powder, which was still prevalent at the time. As time went by, the new .22 Long Rifle cartridges made with smokeless powder became more available and thus cheaper than the .22 Win. Auto rounds. The .22 Long Rifle cartridge was also slightly hotter than the .22 Win. Auto, which was on a par with the .22 Long cartridge. In 1933, Winchester redesigned the Model 1903 to accept the .22 Long Rifle cartridges and the Model 63 was born. This a post-war Model 63 made in 1951. The rifle has a grooved buttstock for loading rounds in the magazine tube, and an operating rod that protrudes through the front of the forend's nosecap. The rifle has wear in the metal and wood consistent with infrequent use. The bore is generally strong with a few patches of erosion. The mechanics are sound. Whether you're looking to add to your Winchester collection or just have an affinity for classic .22 autoloaders, this a neat rifle to add to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
