44 of 139 Lew Horton Smith & Wesson Performance Center Heritage Series Model 15-9 Revolver & Box

Lot # 257 (Sale Order: 257 of 391)

Rare #44 of 139 Lew Horton Smith & Wesson Performance Center Heritage Series Model 15-9 170217 .38 Special 5" Nickel Double Action Revolver & Box

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 15, also called the K-38 Combat Masterpiece, is another classic from Smith. The Model 15 is like the Model 14 but sets itself apart with its Baughman quickdraw sight and shorter barrel. Though firearms development has progressed since the '60s, the name "Combat Masterpiece" was well earned by this revolver. Often issued by law enforcement agencies in the mid-20th century, this revolver embodies the reliability for which Smith & Wesson is famous. This one is a limited edition from the Performance Center for distributor Lew Horton. It commemorates speed shooter ed McGivern and some of his accomplishments. Edward "Ed" McGivern (October 20, 1874 – December 12, 1957) was a famous exhibition shooter, shooting instructor and author of the book Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting. McGivern performed extensive research into the art of handgun shooting, particularly with the double-action revolver. Renowned as one of the best handgunners that ever lived, his Guinness world record for "The greatest rapid-fire feat" (set on August 20, 1932 at the Lead Club Range, South Dakota) still stands. He emptied two revolvers in less than 2 seconds. He set another record on September 13, 1932, shooting five rounds from a double-action revolver at 15 feet in 2/5 of a second, and covering the group with his hand. His accomplishments include "firing two times from 15 feet five shots which could be covered by a silver half-dollar piece in 45/100 of a second". His shooting was so rapid, timing machines would malfunction in attempting to record his shooting speed. This one is in truly excellent condition and will make a great addition to any collection, especially since just a mere 139 were ever made! Please see our photos and good luck!

Smith & Wesson Model 19-5 Combat Magnum .357 100705 Revolver & Box

Lot # 262 (Sale Order: 262 of 391)

1985 Smith & Wesson Model 19-5 Combat Magnum .357 100705 4" Double Action Revolver & Box

Our Assessment: The Model 19 was introduced in 1955 and built on a K frame that was slightly larger in the yoke area and was initially offered only with a 4" barrel. The Model 19 was intended to be a "peace officers dream" and offered a heavy barreled four-inch K-Frame with a shrouded ejector rod and adjustable sights. In the '60s was this revolver offered with a 6" barrel and then in a more concealable 2 1/2" barrel configuration. The model was a major success and would go on to be used by the uniformed officers of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and U.S. Border Patrol until they replaced them with .40 S&W semi-automatic pistols. This a 1985 example with a blued finish, square butt grip frame, and 4" barrel. This a perfect full-frame .357 with a 6-round capacity that will be a great target shooting revolver or addition to a revolver collection.

1988 Smith & Wesson Model 19-5 .357 Combat Magnum 4" Double Action Revolver

Lot # 263 (Sale Order: 263 of 391)

1988 Smith & Wesson Model 19-5 .357 Combat Magnum 4" Double Action Revolver

This a 1988 example with a blued finish, replacement Hogue Monogrip, and 4" barrel. This a perfect full-frame .357 with a 6-round capacity that will be a great target shooting revolver!

Lew Horton Smith & Wesson S&W Model 29-3 .44 Mag Revolver

Lot # 273 (Sale Order: 273 of 391)

Rare 1985 Lew Horton Smith & Wesson S&W Model 29-3 101224 .44 Mag 3" Double Action Revolver

Our Assessment: Developed in a collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Remington with the input of big-bore handgun shooters including Elmer Keith, The .44 Magnum revolver and cartridge took the revolver world by storm in the 1950s, later to be known worldwide, even outside the firearms community, as "the most powerful handgun in the world" due to its portrayal in the Dirty Harry movies. This Smith & Wesson's Model 29-3, their classic .44 Magnum revolver. It is one of about 5,000 made in 1985 as part of a limited run for distributor Lew Horton in a 3" round-butt Combat configuration. This makes for a nice compromise between size and capacity with a full 6-rounds of .44 Magnum in a revolver which can still be concealed, maybe not in shorts and a t-shirt, but certainly in winter clothing. It will also be a little more convenient to carry when you're competing with bears for the local stream's fish. That said, Lew Horton has ceased operations and their limited production specials have always brought a premium from collectors. This a revolver that would be just as well suited to adding to a Smith collection as it would carry for self-defense. Please see our photos and good luck!
