LAPD Smith & Wesson S&W Model 68-2 CHP .38 Special Stainless Revolver & Box

Lot # 291 (Sale Order: 291 of 391)

1984 LAPD Smith & Wesson S&W Model 68-2 CHP .38 Special 6" Stainless Double Action Revolver & Box

These were MANUFACTURED for the CHP and later for the Los Angeles Police Department in 1983 when the California Highway Patrol was not permitted to carry .357 Magnum sidearms. This revolver is marked "LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT" on the right side of the barrel. Interestingly, the frame is also over-stamped on the model marking changing from "66-2" to "68-2". The revolver is in excellent condition, appearing to have spent most of its life in the included factory box. It would make a great shooter, but it should also get the Smith & Wesson collectors interested, most of these were kept by officers.

Smith & Wesson Model 686-3 Silhouette .357 Magnum Double Action Revolver

Lot # 293 (Sale Order: 293 of 391)

1988 Smith & Wesson Model 686-3 Silhouette 104227 .357 Magnum 8 3/8" Double Action Revolver

Our Assessment: This Smith & Wesson's Model 686 with an 8 3/8" barrel and silhouette-style sights. The revolver is built on Smith & Wesson's L-Frame which was introduced in 1980. While the .357 Magnum had been in use for a number of years, police officers did not like the weight of the heavy N-Framed models and while the K-Frame was the standard for defensive revolvers, it was realized that problems with the forcing cone arose after high round count. The solution to the problem was the L-Frame, with input from S&W Historian Roy Jinks the new frame was born. The L-Frame was basically K-Frame that was beefed up just a bit allowing for a larger forcing cone and cylinder window, but retained the same grip frame. In 1980 the L-Frame models were introduced and were instantly recognizable by their full underlug. The 686 was well received by law enforcement and sport shooters alike and has been produced for over 40 years since its introduction in 1980. This 686 revolver is from 1988 and rates in excellent condition, the bore is bright with sharp rifling and the action is sound. With its silhouette sight, this will be a great revolver for handgun silhouette competition, with the front sight able to be individually adjusted and quickly changed for four different distances. This will be a great shooter and make a terrific addition to a collection.

Make: Smith & Wesson

Model: 686-3 Silhouette

Serial Number: BBL2934

Year of Manufacture: 1988

San Francisco PD Smith & Wesson Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman .357 Mag Revolver

Lot # 294 (Sale Order: 294 of 391)

San Francisco Police Department Smith & Wesson Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman .357 Mag 4" Revolver

Our Assessment: The Model 28, also known as the Highway Patrolman, traces its heritage back to the Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum. The Registered Magnum morphed into the Model 27. The Model 28 is unusual in that Smith & Wesson removed, rather than added, features to the Model 27 to create it, in order to reduce production costs with no reduction in utility. A classic N frame revolver, the Highway Patrolman is blued, but it is not polished, saving labor costs. The top strap and frame rounds are bead blasted to achieve a matte appearance. In the late 1940s and the first part of the 1950s Smith & Wesson was the only American gun company manufacturing a .357 magnum revolver. Since this relatively deluxe model was the only revolver available for this cartridge at the time, police departments, as well as individual officers and private shooters, requested from Smith & Wesson a more strictly utilitarian "budget" .357 magnum revolver. S&W responded with the Highway Patrolman (later renamed the Model 28 in 1957). The manufacturing changes made for a more affordable revolver, though mechanically the Highway Patrolman is the same as the more ornate Model 27. The Model 28 was in production from 1954 through 1986. For most of its production run, it was a steady seller with both police officers and civilian shooters. This 4" example has San Francisco Police Department markings and was produced between 1969 and 1972. The revolver is in Very Good condition, showing wear consistent with its service but retaining a good bore and strong mechanics.

Make: Smith & Wesson

Model: 28-2, Highway Patrolman

Serial Number: N25411

Year of Manufacture: 1969-1972

Caliber: .357 Magnum

Action Type: Single/Double Action Revolve with Swing-Out Cylinder

Grip Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered wood. The grips have a couple of little cracks and some losses on the back. There are a few dings in the wood and scrapes that have removed portions of the surface wood. The checkering shows handling wear. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is a little very minor erosion in the bore at the muzzle-end. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 80% of its metal finish. There are areas of thinning and finish loss. There are some scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are some spots of minor oxidation. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a more thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Smith & Wesson 460ES Emergency Survival Kit .460 S&W Revolver & Case

Lot # 297 (Sale Order: 297 of 391)

Smith & Wesson 460ES Emergency Survival Kit 163463 .460 S&W 2.75" Double Action Revolver & Case

Our Assessment: The S&W 460 is built on S&W's largest frame, the X-Frame, which was developed because none of S&W's existing double-action frame designs could handle the muzzle energy and pressures generated by the .500 S&W cartridge. The .460 S&W Magnum is essentially a longer and more powerful version of the .454 Casull, itself a lengthened and more powerful .45 Colt. Able to push a 200 grain bullet past 2,300 fps, the .460 S&W is not just one of the most powerful handguns in the world, it also fires at one of the highest velocities of any revolver in the world, allowing for unprecedented penetration when hunting with a revolver. This example is the Emergency Survival, or ES, model and comes with its emergency kit. Made for only one year and in such good condition, this a great addition to a collection of Smith & Wesson revolvers.

Our Assessment: What a great looking and well-made little pocket pistol! The tip-up barrel feature is great for shooters that have trouble with working the slide, which with the size of the slide is not easy. You can load a round in the chamber without having to cycle the slide and it's ready to shoot. With a CCW permit, you can carry this pistol while wearing just about any clothing but a swimsuit. While the .25 ACP may not be the ideal defensive caliber, it makes for a perfect backup and this pistol will be concealable when just about nothing else would be. This example is in Fine Plus condition and has a matte finish with very few cosmetic defects and a great bore. If you're looking for a fun range plinker or are yet to add a Model 21A to your Beretta collection, this pistol is a must have! Please see our photos and good luck!
