Jim Hoag Master Grade Colt Gold Cup National Match Longslide Pistol
Lot # 308 (Sale Order: 308 of 391)
Our Assessment: The 1911 already had a long history by the 1950s when practical shooting competitions were born. Southern California (as ironic as it may seem, today) was the font of practical shooting with now well-known names such as Ray Chapman, Jack Weaver, Jeff Cooper, and Jim Hoag. The original intent of these matches was to see what civilian shooters were capable of with a handgun where the only restrictions on the shooters were for safety. This would eventually evolve into IPSC, though other sports such as Steel Challenge and the Bianchi Cup would also spawn from these early practical shooting matches. Most fans of custom 1911s will be well familiar with Mr. Hoag, who unfortunately passed in April, 2020. A contemporary of luminaries such as Ron Lerch, Mike Dalton and Jeff Cooper, Hoag learned just about everything there is to know about the 1911 and could perform just about any modification you could want to a precision which is hard to fathom. He was among the first, if not the very first, to begin modifying pistols specifically for competition use. This example of his work showcases his talents, with a low-mounted Bo-Mar sight, custom Commander-style hammer, checkered front strap, checkered and squared trigger guard, extended slide stop, beavertail grip safety and, distinctively Hoag, a slide which has been lengthened to accommodate an 8" barrel. At the peak of his career, Hoag would customize about 300 pistols a year, but the great majority were left in their original Government or Commander form-factor. Fewer were built into 6" long-slide guns and fewer still 8". Hoag even made one 12" gun "on a lark".This 8" Master Grade is very special as it remained in Jim Hoag's possession until 2015 and comes with a signed bill of sale from Hoag himself. Included with the bill of sale is an aged tag which identifies this gun by serial number as "The first 8" Master Grade", which would explain why Hoag kept it for so long. The bottom of the slide is marked "J. HOAG / 7", though we can only speculate on the significance of the number as we have not inspected any other Hoag-numbered long-slides. The pistol comes with a wide variety of publications with articles about Hoag, photos of him both shooting and in his workshop, as well as a neat edition of the Journal of the South West Pistol League with a transcript of an interview with Hoag discussing the earliest days of practical shooting and the gunsmithing behind the guns. A steel block which was to one-day be used to create another long-slide is also included from Hoag's shop, not something that collectors are likely to come across again.Whether you're a fan of 1911s, practical shooting, or the work of Jim Hoag, this a truly outstanding example of a custom 1911 for the collector or shooter alike. Its documentation, condition, quality, and connection to a pioneering handgunner and pistol smith will give it a prized place in any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Derek Fernelius engraved Pre-War Colt Super .38 Semi Automatic
Lot # 309 (Sale Order: 309 of 391)
Our Assessment: The .38 Super cartridge was first introduced by Colt in 1928 as a higher pressure loading of the .38 ACP. It is capable of driving a 115 gr. bullet past 1400 fps., producing more than 500 ft-lbs of energy. This not quite up to the .357 Magnum, but was still capable of penetrating body armor and automobile bodies of the time. Today, the cartridge is favored by many top pistol match competitors for its ability to make "Major" power factor in IPSC/USPSA, with a lighter bullet offering less felt recoil than that produced from a .45 ACP round. Colt first introduced the round in its 1911A1 frame, making it basically the same as the Government Model except for its cartridge. The 1911 pistol had already gained a reputation as a highly reliable pistol during WWI, Colt saw no reason not to capitalize on that reputation with a new caliber offering. This pre-war Super .38 pistol was made in 1934 and is in excellent condition as upgraded. This pistol has been embellished by apprentice Derek Fernelius under his mentor Master engraver Philip Quigley. The pistol has full coverage relief scroll engraving accented with inlaid gold borders and fire blued parts. The factory markings are exceptionally preserved and are still crisp, the serrations are still sharp. The "COLT" marking on the right of the slide and Rampant Colt have been gold inlaid. The underside of the right slide rail is marked "ENG. DPF" and the left is marked "ENG. PL QUIGLEY". Quigley's pieces are in some of the most famous collections in the world including the Autry Museum of Western Art, National Civil War Museum and NRA Collection. The Super .38 pistols are highly prized by collectors and one this pretty is bound to end up in a collection!

Colt Gold Cup National Match Government Model .45 ACP Pistol & Box
Lot # 312 (Sale Order: 312 of 391)
Our Assessment: In the mid-1900s the 1911 was used for all manner of pistol competitions, but the base Government model typically needed some tweaking and modification to get the best performance. In 1957, Colt introduced their Gold Cup National Match, an out-of-the-box, purpose-built target pistol with adjustable target sights, hand-fit parts, serrated grip frame and adjustable trigger. This example is from 1969, a fairly early Gold Cup made just before the pistols would actually be marked "GOLD CUP". It appears to have seen little use, retaining about 97% of its metal finish, a great bore and strong mechanics. All of these old National Match pistols are collectible, this early example with the significant added value will make a great addition to nearly any collection, but should also prove to be a great shooter. Please see our photos and good luck in your bidding!

Colt MKIV Series ‘80 Government Model .38 Super 5" 02570e 1911 Pistol & Case
Lot # 313 (Sale Order: 313 of 391)
Our Assessment: The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols served the military of the United States from 1911 to 1985, through two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power, and are held in high regard by those who have used them. The design was the end-result of a series of developments by famous gun designer John Browning, starting with the Model 1900. The advances made by Browning were revolutionary at the time, and were so successful that they are considered commonplace today. Browning not only developed first a pivoting and then a tilting barrel to allow for a locked system, he developed the concept of "the slide", which is now synonymous with semi-automatic handguns. Having secured a contract for the US Military sidearm, Colt also offered the pistol to the commercial market as the "Government Model". The design has seen some updates including a firing-pin block safety, higher profile sights, and more ergonomic grips, but the basic design and fantastic trigger remain the same after more than a century. This example is a MK IV Series 80 Government Model enhanced made in 2003. The enhanced variant comes from the factory with a beavertail grip safety, skeletonized hammer and an under-cut trigger guard. This example is chambered for the .38 Super cartridge, in excellent condition. It retains 99% of its blued finish, a great bore and strong mechanics. If you are looking for your first 1911 or your next, this would be a great addition to any safe in America.

Lot # 314 (Sale Order: 314 of 391)
Our Assessment: The Gold Cup National Match .38 Mid-Range was designed from the ground up for ISSF matches. After issues arose with the first two variants, the MKIII, the final and most refined version was produced. It has the features a coarsely threaded chamber to delay slide retraction, standard bushing, shoulder at the front of the chamber, depressor & depressor spring on the sear, and an elliason adjustable rear sight. The production of all three versions combined was less than 10,000 so this will make a nice addition to a Colt collection that is missing the .38 Mid-Range National Match. The Mark III is still a great bullseye competition pistol. These mid-range Gold Cups keep increasing in value.

Lot # 322 (Sale Order: 322 of 391)
Our Assessment: The Glock 35 is one of the most popular pistols in IDPA stock service pistol competitions and USPSA production division. Approximately the size of a 1911 and shooting .40 S&W ammunition, it is very controllable, comfortable, and affordable to shoot even if you don't reload. The G35 has also been used as a service weapon by some law enforcement agencies and is certainly suitable for personal and home defense. The reliability and longevity of the Glock pistol have been proven beyond reasonable doubt and this model is really about as good as it gets. This pistol has seen little use and is truly in Fine Plus condition. Additionally, this pistol comes with a Lone Wolf Arms "35-9" extra barrel. This a drop in barrel for the Glock 35, but it is chambered in 9mm Luger. Heckler & Koch H&K Model P7M13 Double Stack 9mm Squeeze Cocker Pistol & Case
Lot # 324 (Sale Order: 324 of 391)
Our Assessment: The decision to equip West German police with an advanced 9mm service pistol and replace existing 7.65mm Browning-caliber weapons was prompted after the 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre. The new firearm was to meet the following requirements: chamber the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge, weigh no more than 1,000 g (35 oz), the pistol's dimensions would not exceed 180 × 130 × 34 mm, it should have a muzzle energy of no less than 500 J and a service life of at least 10,000-rounds. The pistol was also to be fully ambidextrous, safe to carry with a loaded chamber and able to be quickly drawn and ready to fire instantly. As a result of a competitive bid the German police forces selected three different pistols into service: the Swiss SIG Sauer P225 (designated the P6) and two German designs—the P7 (officially designated the PSP) and the Walther P5. Series production of the P7 started in 1979. Shortly after, the pistol was introduced in a higher capacity, double-stack frame, just in time to be submitted to the US Army trials to replace the 1911. Though the trial ultimately resulted in the adoption of the M9 from Beretta, the P7M13 is still considered by some to be the best version of the P7 series. This pistol was made in 1991 and is in excellent condition. The polygonal rifling is still strong with no erosion and the pistol has a superb trigger pull that is initiated by squeezing the fore grip of the grip frame. Its finish has only the slightest of wear and it appears this pistol was used seldom if at all. It comes with A serial numbered matching case, cleaning rod in its protective sheath, gas cylinder cleaning tool, two 13-round magazines, serial matching test target, and a manual. Please see our pictures and good luck!

Sharp 1988 Heckler Koch HK Model P7M8 9mm 4" Squeeze Cocker Pistol Case
Lot # 325 (Sale Order: 325 of 391)
Our Assessment: The decision to equip West German police with an advanced 9mm service pistol and replace existing 7.65mm Browning-caliber weapons was prompted after the 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre. As a result of a competitive bid the German police forces selected three different pistols into service: the Swiss SIG Sauer P225 (designated the P6) and two German designs—the P7 (officially designated the PSP) and the Walther P5. Series production of the P7 started in 1979. Shortly after, the pistol was adopted by the German Federal Police's counter-terrorism unit (GSG 9) and the German Army's special forces formations. The P7 was produced primarily by H&K but also under license by the Greek defense firm Hellenic Arms Industry as well as in Mexico by the Departamento de Industria Militar (DIM), as a sidearm for general officers and staff. The pistol was also exported to several countries. The P7M8 has a couple of notable improvements over the original P7 design. Due to the placement of the gas chamber immediately above the trigger guard, the inside of the guard tended to heat up rapidly when fired. The P7M8 introduced a larger trigger guard with a polymer heat-shield to protect the user. It also relocated the magazine release from the heel of the frame to the rear of the trigger guard, a much lauded improvement for the American commercial market. This pistol is from 1988 and retains a lot of its original finish. The polygonal rifling is still well defined with no erosion and the pistol has a superb trigger pull that is initiated by squeezing the fore grip of the grip frame. Its blued finish has only light handling marks and it appears this pistol was used seldom if at all. It comes with one magazine, serial matching case, and paperwork. This perfect for adding to a collection, add to your carry rotation, or just to have fun with on the range. Please see our pictures and good luck!
