1964 Colt Detective Special .38 Special Double Action Revolver
Lot # 51 (Sale Order: 51 of 391)
Our Assessment: The Colt Detective Special was in many ways the same revolver as the Police Positive Special, except it was limited to a 2" barrel (very few were produced with 3" barrels). The Colt Detective Special and its aluminum-framed cousin, the Colt Cobra, were very popular with police detectives because they held six cartridges versus the five cartridges of the Smith & Wesson J-frames. The Detective Special had a long production run, from 1927 to 1995, a testament to its popularity. This mid era example was MANUFACTURED in 1964. The revolver is chambered in .38 Special with a 2" barrel. This Colt is in Very Good condition, appearing to have spent more time working than sleeping in a safe. This will make a classy carry revolver but also will be a nice addition to a Colt revolver collection. Please see our photos, good luck and happy bidding! Robert

Lot # 53 (Sale Order: 53 of 391)
Our Assessment: he Colt Detective Special was similar to the Police Positive Special, except it was limited to a 2" barrel. It was very popular with police detectives because they held six cartridges versus the five cartridges of the Smith & Wesson Model 36. This example was produced in 1966 and has seen some customization. In addition to its new stag grips, the revolver sports a nickel finish and extensive engraving. We do not now the engraver, but there is an "HF" monogram under the left grip panel. The result is a gorgeous revolver that's almost a shame to cover up with a holster.

1947-1948 Colt Official Police .38 Special Double Action Revolver
Lot # 54 (Sale Order: 54 of 391)
Our Assessment: A "successor" to the Army Special, the Official Police varied only in minor ways, such as the name and markings (the Official Police even retained the serial numbering of the Army revolver). Colt saw the majority of their "Army" revolvers going to police departments, and to paraphrase the Apostle Matthew, "Give not that which is holy unto the [Army],". Colt simply focused their marketing efforts on the buyer that was buying. A few other minor changes that are worth mentioning are the rear sight going from a U-notch configuration to a square-notch, and the top strap being dulled for glare reduction. In one hell of an understatement, Colt referred to the Official Police in advertisements as "Most acceptable,". Indeed. Despite being more than 60 years old, this revolver is still in nearly Fine condition with a bright bore. It should still make for a great working revolver today but would be indispensable to a serious Colt collection. Good luck in your bidding!

Engraved Colt New Line .22 Short Rimfire Pocket Single Action Revolver
Lot # 55 (Sale Order: 55 of 391)
Our Assessment: This a Colt New Line .22 Revolver, made in 1876. The revolver is particularly interesting as it has factory engraving and a legible etched-panel on the barrel. About 16,000 1st Model pistols were made between 1873 and early 1876, with over 39,000 of the 2nd Models produced in 1876 and 1877. Colt stopped producing these cute little pocket pistols due to overwhelming competition from cheaply made "suicide specials". This revolver will be a nice find for collectors of early Colt revolvers.

1922 Colt Police Positive .32 Police/S&W Double Action Revolver
Lot # 56 (Sale Order: 56 of 391)
Our Assessment: The Police Positive .38 was the successor to Colt's Lightning Double Action model. It was introduced in 1905 and offered a more powerful alternative to Colt's New Police model. They quickly became popular due to their swing-out cylinder greatly reducing reloading time and smaller frame, convenient to carry while out on the town. The "Positive" refers to the positive locking system on the cylinder which ensures a solid lockup while the trigger is depressed, a feature which would continue through Colt's Serpent series. The Colt Police Positive Special was basically the same revolver as the Police Positive, except it had a longer cylinder for the .38 Special cartridge, and a slightly longer frame to hold it. It is interesting that they could afford to make both versions at the same time, and that they could find a market for both, but this finally changed after WWII with everyone wanting the more potent cartridge, and the Police Positive was dropped about the same time as the 3rd Issue Police Positive Special came out. This early Police Positive Special was made in 1922. It has a well preserved blued finish and a 4" barrel and chambered in .38 Special. It comes equipped with nice black checkered grips. The revolver is in Superb condition with about 96% of its original finish remaining, it has a bright bore and strong mechanics. This vintage Colt is exceedingly well made, it is impressive for a 100+ year old revolver. All vintage Colts are collectible, and this one will certainly be no exception. This well maintained Police Positive is a must have for any Colt or revolver collection. Please see our photos, good luck and happy bidding! Robert

1922 Detroit Police Colt Police Positive .38 S&W 4" Nickel Revolver
Lot # 57 (Sale Order: 57 of 391)
Our Assessment: The Police Positive was introduced in 1907 to fill a demand from the law enforcement market for a compact revolver. Chambered for either the .32 or .38 caliber, the revolvers were fairly small, especially for a 6-round cylinder, and they saw great success in both the police and commercial markets. This example was made in 1922 and is chambered for ".38 Police", which is the same as .38 S&W but Colt was loath to place their competitor's name on their own products. It was issued to the Detroit Police, who apparently had a penchant for nickel-plated revolvers. even into the 1960s, one can find Detroit Police Positive revolvers. This revolver shows signs of use over the last century, but still retains strong mechanics, a good bore and original finish. It will make a nice addition to a revolver or police sidearm collection.

Rare Webley Fosbery Model 1903 7.5" .455 Semi Automatic Revolver 1906
Lot # 61 (Sale Order: 61 of 391)
Our Assessment: This revolver is in about Very Good overall condition. This revolver's markings include a W&S flying bullet, Webley Fosbery on the top strap and matching serial numbers on the frame and cylinder. This a wonderful example of a very desirable firearm. The Webley Fosbery is one of the most interesting firearms ever designed in which it was a stop-gap between revolvers and a Semi Automatic pistol. It has been called the answer to a question that no one asked, and was probably a decade too late. The front of the barrel is pushed-back to cock the hammer and rotate the cylinder. When the revolver fires, the barrel will move backwards under recoil, cocking the hammer and rotating the cylinder automatically. The British Army rejected the idea but these were bought by British Officers before, during and after WWI until 1924 when production ceased. They were very popular with colonial officers for their caliber and ease of firing. They were also very accurate as opposed to the double action revolvers of the time. These revolvers are scarce and growing more so every year. If you are interested in Webleys, revolvers, or Semi Automatic pistols, don't miss out on this revolver as you have the best of all three!
Make: Webley & Scott
Model: Webley-Fosbery Model 1903
Serial Number: 4249
Year of Manufacture: 1906
Caliber: .455 Webley
Action Type: Fosbery semi-automatic revolver. The barrel is pushed back to rotate the cylinder and cock the hammer, at which time the trigger can be pulled in single-action mode to fire the revolver. Recoil continues to cause the cylinder to turn and the hammer to cock.
Barrel Length: 7.5"
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Patridge style blade pinned to the barrel. The rear sight is a U notch at the top rear of the barrel release.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered walnut that are dark with oil staining. There are several gouges and deep dings at the top of the right side, dings in the bottom of the grips from the lanyard ring, and a few other marks. The checkering on the right grip is worn with compression marks and dings but the left grip checkering is still well defined. Overall, the grips are in about Good to Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, including the safety. We have not fired this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

WWII Webley Mark IV .38 S&W 1942-1943 War Finish Double Action Revolver
Lot # 62 (Sale Order: 62 of 391)
Our Assessment: This Webley and Scott designed Mark IV Revolver has an interesting genesis. At the end of WWI the British government concluded that the .455 caliber cartridge was no longer suited for service and that a new cartridge was needed. The new service caliber was .38 firing a 200-grain bullet (hence the designation .38/200; the cartridge is almost identical to .38 Smith & Wesson). Webley & Scott did not take long to present a service revolver chambered for the cartridge. Much to their dismay the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield developed a nearly identical revolver, the Enfield No. 2 Mk. 1, and despite the external similarities the Enfield and Webley had completely different internal mechanisms and their parts were not interchangeable. Webley and Scott felt they were being slighted by the government and filed a complaint over the issue. The government claimed that the revolver had originally been designed by Captain Henry C. Boys, and thus Webley and Scott were not owed any compensation. Following some wrangling, Webley & Scott were purportedly awarded 1,250 pounds (half of what they had requested in damages). The firm had lost their military contract, for it was cheaper for the British Army to use guns made at a government arsenal, and Webley and Scott began to focus on commercial sales. Despite this, when WWII broke out the British military was in dire need of arms and approximately 126,000 Mark IV Webley & Scott revolvers were ordered during the conflict. The Mark IV remained a popular revolver on the commercial market until it was discontinued sometime between 1978-79.This particular Webley Mark IV was MANUFACTURED originally for service during WWII. It has the distinct "WAR FINISH" stamp on the left side of the frame which indicates it was pressed into service during the conflict, the mark was placed by Webley & Scott to indicate to users that a higher quality finish could be expected during peacetime production of the handgun. The gun also has surviving British government markings further indicating the gun was accepted for military service. The gun was eventually retired and it was reproofed by the London Proof House for commercial sales. This gun is a solid option for WWII history aficionados and fans of historical firearms. Please see our photos, good luck and happy bidding! Robert

Post-War Webley Mark IV .38 S&W Double Action Revolver, MFD 1954-57
Lot # 63 (Sale Order: 63 of 391)
Our Assessment: This revolver is in Very Good overall condition. This a nice example of a post war Mark IV, but has import marks on the underside of the barrel. At the end of the First World War, the British military decided that the .455 caliber revolver and cartridge was too large for modern military use and concluded after numerous tests and extensive trials, that a pistol in .38 caliber firing a 200-grain bullet would be just as effective as the .455 for stopping an enemy. This resulted in the development of the Mark IV which was used extensively throughout WWII. This will make a nice addition to a collection of Webleys and can also be used for home protection.

Sharp 1952 Smith & Wesson 38/44 Heavy Duty .38 Special 4" Revolver & Box
Lot # 73 (Sale Order: 73 of 391)
Our Assessment: While the K and even smaller J-frames would become those most commonly associated with .38 Special Smith & Wessons, when the cartridge was undergoing development to become more potent, the more stout N-frame was chosen to chamber the new round. The company wanted a hotter and more powerful .38, the first round was the .38/44, a hot loaded .38 Special that was later renamed the .38-44 S&W Special and finally known as the .38 Special High Velocity. To handle the added pressures, the company selected the beefy N-Frame. These revolvers became the .38/44, offered in the Heavy Duty configuration with fixed sights and the Outdoorsman version with target sights. The name .38/44 was simple enough as it was a .38 Caliber revolver built on a .44 Caliber frame, the N-Frame had originally come about to handle the .44 S&W Special. This example was produced in 1952 a few years before it was renamed the Model 20. This would make a great shooter but will be a great addition to a Smith & Wesson collection. As Smith & Wesson continued to develop rounds, the end result was the glorious .357 Magnum. Without the .38/44 we may never have gotten one of the most iconic calibers ever, besides just being a badass .38 on an N-Frame, this an awesome piece of firearms history! Please see our pictures and good luck!
