NO RESERVE - Durant Motors Star Radiator

Lot # 80 (Sale Order: 77 of 86)

Durant Motors was an American car company started in 1921, in Long Island City, NY. It was founded by William Billy Durant who had been fired from his CEO position at Gen...moreeral Motors. The company produced vehicles from 1922 through 1928. The Star was an assembled car line, produced from outside supplier components. NO RESERVE - Dake Engine Co Ships Wheel

Lot # 82 (Sale Order: 79 of 86)

Dake Engine Company of Grand Haven, Michigan, was founded in 1887 by William F. Dake and originally produced his new invention, the double reciprocating, square piston st...moreeam engine. The company expanded into nautical equipment in the early 1900’s and then struggled to survive through the Great Depression. But during World War II, Dake manufactured more than 10,000 steam engines, steering gears, windlasses, and capstans for the new Liberty cargo ships built for the war effort. Today, Dake produces industrial machine tools that have been featured on several TV shows including Orange County Choppers and X-treme 4x4. This steering station made by Dake Engine Company wears serial number 80449 and is estimated to be circa 1930’s. The rudder indicator arrow is fully functional when the wheel is spun in either direction. The station is made completely of heavy brass including the wheel which measures 42 inches in diameter. The entire station stands roughly 53 inches tall to the top of a vertical spoke. The pedestal measures 35 inches tall and is mounted on a wood base. There are 6 spokes on the wheel, with the King Spoke identified by multiple rings cut into in the handle. The total weight is approximately 160 pounds. This will make a wonderful conversation piece for the nautical enthusiast or collector. It is truly a unique artifact from a great time in nautical history.

NO RESERVE - Wludolph Ships Binnacle

Lot # 84 (Sale Order: 81 of 86)

W. Ludolph & Co. GmbH is a German manufacturing company producing nautical and aeronautical compasses. The original company was created in 1846 by W. Ihlder. In 1867, the...more name changed to W. Ludolph Nautisches Institut. It was later transformed into a GmbH (LLC in German law) in 1908 and into an AG (Ltd. in German law) in 1920. W. Ludolph was the first European company that broke the British monopoly of nautical compasses. At the very beginning of the 20th century, it added aeronautical compasses to its portfolio and was the first German company to build compasses for the Zeppelin, in 1906. This W. Ludolph ships binnacle is set with a 12 inch (31cm) diameter compass. The compass is spirit dampened, gimbal mounted, and has a Flinders Bar for stability onboard a vessel. Markings in degrees and quadrants are denoted on an azimuth ring surrounding the compass. A brass cowling, with viewing window, protects the compass and contains a functional oil lamp, originally used for lighting the compass. This binnacle has been converted to electrical illumination with white and red lights mounted within the teak octagonal pedestal. Two compensating spheres are mounted on either side and the pedestal rests on a square base. Overall dimensions are 63 inches H x 32 inches W x 20 inches D. Fun fact: The port and starboard quadrantal correctors (compensating spheres) are also known as 'Kelvin's Balls' after Lord Kelvin who patented this new system of compass, the Kelvin's Compass, in the 1880s.
