Fr. 295 - 1886 $10 Silver Certificate

Lot # 126 (Sale Order: 126 of 518)

An 1886 $10 tombstone is pretty tough to find as a type note. The note we are offering here is an Fr. 295, which is three times rarer than the more commonly encountered Fr. 293. The portrait on the front of the note is that of Thomas Hendricks. Hendricks was the acting Vice-President of the U.S. when he passed away unexpectedly in November 1885. One can only assume that his recent passing is the reason for the tombstone design. The note itself is a lightly circulated problem-free very fine 25.

Fr. 303 - 1908 $10 Silver Certificate

Lot # 127 (Sale Order: 127 of 518)

A moderately circulated example of by far the scarcest of the three signature combinations for this $10 Silver Certificate design with the large blue "X" overprint at left. Less than 150 serial numbers are enumerated in the latest Track & Price census for this Friedberg number with many of the known specimens displaying various impairments. Today's offering, fortunately, does not have any problems, save honest wear, and exhibits solid margins and excellent color.

Fr. 322 - 1891 $20 Silver Certificate

Lot # 128 (Sale Order: 128 of 518)

I imagine this note will quickly be submitted for grading shortly after its new owner gets it home. This example is completely free of any condition issues and is only being sold raw because we didn't have time to grade it. 1891 Manning notes were once considered an integral part of a "basic" type set. Today they are much more difficult to find in nice circulated grades like this.

Fr. 727 - 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Note Chicago

Lot # 134 (Sale Order: 134 of 518)

It is a rare treat to be able to offer a solid fancy serial number on a large-size note. This piece is taped and has a few condition issues. I would wager that someone found this and kept it as a wallet piece to show off; he probably also cleaned up at liar's poker.

Fr. 748* - 1918 $2 Federal Reserve Note Boston Star

Lot # 135 (Sale Order: 135 of 518)

This is one of two known Fr. 748 star note battleships from the Boston district. If the census data is correct, then this piece was last seen on the market in 1980. The other known survivor is just a VG. The note we are offering here is a problem free fine. The market for truly rare large size star notes is as active right now as it has ever been. We think our estimate should be accurate, but if two people decide they don't want to wait a decade or two for the next offering, then $15,000 might not be enough to buy this rarity.

Fr. 814 - 1918 $10 Federal Reserve Bank Note Chicago

Lot # 138 (Sale Order: 138 of 518)

A new entrant to the census of this downright scarce Friedberg number that has only 33 serial numbers reported, according to Track & Price. It represents the better of the two signature combinations for the Chicago $10 FRBNs and is an evenly circulated and unmolested specimen that will delight its new owner today.

Fr. 841a - 1914 $5 FRN Kansas City Red Seal

Lot # 140 (Sale Order: 140 of 518)

I love low serial number red seals on 1914 FRNs. They are scarce, but most districts, for whatever reason, seem to have a few two digit survivors. These were of course the first currency issued by the newly established Federal Reserve Banks, so it isn't unreasonable to think a few proud banking officials tucked them away. However, the serial number data suggests that large runs of low numbers weren't saved. So it might be a while before another one from Kansas City is available.

Lot # 142 (Sale Order: 142 of 518)

Fr. 898b - 1914 $10 Federal Reserve Note Chicago Red Seal

Lot # 143 (Sale Order: 143 of 518)

You hate to see something as minor as a faint ink mark put a note with this much pop into an apparent holder, but those are the standards we have established. Everything about this red seal is premium for the grade and I would expect the final price to reflect that.

Fr. 926* - 1914 $10 Federal Reserve Note Atlanta Star

Lot # 144 (Sale Order: 144 of 518)

The census data isn't clear, but this is either the second or third known 926 star note, depending on which database you use. Large size stars from the Atlanta district are scarce in general. This particular note is a problem free fine that should sell within the estimate or a little better.

A well margined and well embossed example of this $20 FRN from the better Minneapolis district with this signature combination usually chosen to represent this district and denomination in a type set. Only a light center fold holds this pretty note back from at least a Choice New grade.

Fr. 1132-A - 1918 $500 Federal Reserve Note Boston

Lot # 147 (Sale Order: 147 of 518)

This is an exciting new addition to the census. It becomes just the fifth reported 1918 $500 for the Boston district. One of the five is held by the Smithsonian. It is a rare occurrence to find new large size high denominations in today's collecting environment. They have been a recognized rarity for decades. These were rarities almost as soon as they were printed. The Boston district only issued 13,600 notes. The last one that sold at auction was a PCGS 35 that brought just over $43,000 in 2007. So it seems likely that it will take a bid in the high end or above the estimate to buy this lovely VF in what is fast becoming a very hot currency market.

Fr. 1132-J - 1918 $500 Federal Reserve Note Kansas City

Lot # 148 (Sale Order: 148 of 518)

We are excited to be able to offer another 1918 $500 in the sale today. This was part of a last minute consignment of a few nice high-end type notes that we did not have time to grade. However, this has been in the census as AU for decades and we don't see any reason to disagree. It does have two tiny pinholes, but it is free of any hard creases or distractions. It appears that a single barely present center fold is the reason for the old census grade of AU. This is the first time this note has been available publically since a 1979 fixed price list offering. Our population data shows that just 14 Kansas City 1918 $500s are known to exist, meaning that not only is this a very attractive note, but it should be valued higher than as just a type note for the series.

Fr. 1172 - 1907 $10 Gold Certificate

Lot # 149 (Sale Order: 149 of 518)

This did not trade hands many times before getting tucked away for a future generation to enjoy. Collecting all the different varieties of the 1907 $10 gold certificate is a doable but challenging collecting goal, especially if you only limit yourself to examples that are this sharp.

Fr. 1178 - 1882 $20 Gold Certificate

Lot # 150 (Sale Order: 150 of 518)

A circulated example of this less often seen early $20 Gold Certificate that represents a one Friedberg number type as it is the only Series 1882 $20 Gold with a small red seal. Today's offering faces up quite nicely for the grade with just a couple of edge splits noticed along with some soiling solely on the back.
