FINE BUFFALO NEWTON BOLT ACTION SPORTING RIFLE

Lot # 180 (Sale Order: 178 of 823)

NSN. BARREL 24". CALIBER..30 NEWTON. The Newton Arms Co. Inc. was incorporated in 1914. The earliest of many catalogs issued by Newton offered Mauser and Sauer- Mauser rifles converted, probably by Fred Adolph, to Adolph and Newton calibers. Fred Adolph was a gunsmith in Genoa, New York. He and Newton worked together to design some of the early calibers. These cartridges were initially named Adolph calibers and later named using Newton in place of Adolph. Newton developed several calibers. The best known are the .22 Newton (90 grain bullet), .256 Newton, .30 Newton (180 grain bullet), .33 Newton (200 grain bullet), .35 Newton (250 grain bullet) and .40 Newton (300 grain bullet). He is considered the pioneer of high power spitzer cartridges at the turn of the century. The .30 Newton was high-velocity, rimless centerfire cartridge introduced in 1913. It was based on a German caliber of the period, the 11.2x72 Schuler. The cartridges were produced by the Western Cartridge Company. It was loaded with 150 gr (10 g) bullet, with a muzzle velocity of 3,208 ft/s (978 m/s), and 3,445 ft·lbf (4,671 J) of energy. The outbreak of World War I led Charles to manufacture his own rifles. With the employment of noted barrel-maker and gunsmith Harry Pope, Newton assured his rifles would be of the highest quality. These First Model 1916 rifles were made in Buffalo, New York. This rifle is stamped Newton Arms Co. Buffalo NY on the Pope made barrel. One of most gracefull and handsome bolt action sporters ever made, it features a slight schnauble fore-end, straight comb American walnut stock , finely checkered pistol grip and fore-end, blue finish with ingenious bolt peep sight. The floor plate was made to unscrew so the action could easily be removed from the stock. The rear sight slot is blank. This rifle also incorporates double set triggers. The metal retains about 85% original blue with some patina and most of the wear is on the floor plate. The stock is handsome with usual handling marks. There are a couple of holes fore & aft in stock and would easily be hidden with installation of sling swivels. Some also added a brass grip cap. The bore is sharp. Every bolt action collector should have at least one Newton. C&R

Lot # 186 (Sale Order: 185 of 823)

Gun is signed on barrel and lock. Highly carved stock, swivel breech. The 30" octagon barrel is rifled, 58 bore. The round barrel is smoothbore size 20 bore. The walnut fore-end panels on both sides of barrel where as one side hold period wooden ramrod. Stock is beautifully carved with wooden patch box. Furniture is brass. Gun has double set triggers. All metal is dark patina. Unfortunately, the fore-end panels have cracks and the muzzle end have deteriorated. JOSLYN BANNERMAN CONVERTED SHOTGUN

Lot # 196 (Sale Order: 195 of 823)

The Joslyn rifle was the first breech loading metallic cartridge rifle manufactured at a U.S. national armory, chambered for the .56-.52 Spencer metallic cartridge, and 3,007 were assembled in January to June of 1865 utilizing breech units supplied by the Joslyn Firearms Company. This weapon was altered at some point in time to use a 2 1/2" 12 gauge shotgun shell, most likely by Bannerman of New York. Many of the rifles were shipped overseas after the Civil War and chambered in a variety of calibers. The conversion consisted of fitting a smoothbore shotgun barrel that measures 27 3/4" and eliminating the barrel band. Frame still has Joslyn factory stamp. Gun is fully functional. Barrel is a smooth brown patina as is frame. Stock is excellent with little roughness near breech. Saddle bar has been removed and JWB is carved on left side of stock. Bore is very good. A
