WWII NAZI GERMAN HBT WEHRMACHT SERVICE TUNIC WW2

Lot # 314a (Sale Order: 326 of 874)

Mid-war, (circa 1943), reed green, cotton/rayon blend construction field blouse with an HBT weave, features a vertical, six button, front closure with a single metal hook and eye positioned at the forward neckline. The field blouse has four, non-pleated front pockets with straight edged button down flaps. The breast pockets are the basic patch type while the hip pockets are the saddlebag type with expanding side panels. The side panels of the field blouse each have three, vertically aligned, stitched eyelets at the waistline for the belt support hooks. The reverse of the field blouse has a short, central, vertical, tail skirt vent and two, vertical, tapering darts. The straight cut sleeve cuffs have a small, vertical, slash to the outside seams with dual fit adjustment buttons to each. The fabric shoulder strap retaining loops and pebbled alloy buttons are intact. The field blouse has a lay down collar with the typical zig-zag reinforcement stitching to the reverse. The unlined interior of the field blouse has gray rayon reinforcement panels to each side panel and around the armpits. The interior side panels each have a vertical, reed/green, cotton/rayon strap with six stitched eyelets to each for the belt support hooks positioned at the waistline. The forward right tail skirt has a rayon field dressing pocket with a single button closure. All three collar liner buttons are intact. The front closure and exterior pocket buttons are all the removable, field-gray painted, pebbled alloy and sheet metal types secured by circular "S" rings. The shoulder strap buttons are also the field-gray painted, pebbled, alloy type but are stitched in place. The buttons all retain the large majority of their field-gray paint. The cuff, field dressing pocket and collar liner buttons are all the ersatz, pressed, natural tan, cardboard type and appear to have their original stitching. The field blouse is roughly size 40" chest. Nice field used example. HBT, (Herring Bone Twill), uniforms were originally introduced on April 1ST 1933 to be utilized as a drill uniform and save wear and tear on the service uniform and field blouse. Regulations prescribed that the drill uniform was the basic uniform to worn by all new recruits for most daily functions. Originally the drill uniforms were constructed in natural, unbleached cotton with an HBT weave that proved especially durable but impractical due to easy soiling. On February 12TH 1940 the color of the drill uniforms was altered to a more practical reed green coloration. When utilized as a drill tunic the garments were issued with no insignia with only EM/NCO sleeve rank and collar trim insignia applied to donate the wearers rank. The drill uniforms were utilized for the duration of the war with minor modifications and in early 1942 a modified drill tunic was introduced for wear as a summer combat field blouse and followed the basic modifications of the standard issue field blouse through-out the war. Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the army’s Kleiderkasse, (Clothing Account), system. The Officers and certain senior NCO’s could choose to purchase their uniforms from the armed forces clothing depots or to privately purchase garments of higher quality. Although enlisted personnel were issued their uniforms from government supplies they were also permitted to purchase privately tailored uniforms although the price may have been restrictive.

Lot # 316a (Sale Order: 329 of 874)

A black wool cap whose fold-down side panels slope towards the front where they are sewn to the side of the cap. Sewn to the left side of the cap, above where its side panel begins to slope, is a machine woven, first pattern (1935-39) NSKK eagle and swastika, with a banner arching above upon which is "N.S.K.K.," all in the early silver-aluminum thread with black accents, on a black base, inverted triangular rayon base. In early 1931 Adolf Hühnlein was appointed as Chief of the NSAK and proposed a name change to NSKK, which was officially accepted in April of 1931. Shortly after the purge of the SA in the "Night of the Long Knives," in June of 1934, the NSKK was promoted to an official NSDAP organization, given independent status within the party and absorbed the SA Motor Squadron’s personnel.

WWII US MERCHANT MARINE PATCH LOT RATES CORPSMAN

Lot # 320 (Sale Order: 333 of 874)

WWII US MERCHANT MARINE RATE PATCH LOT OF 11 to INCLUDE 1) USMS 1st Class Pharmacist Rate on blue 2) USMS 1st Class Machinist Mate Rate on white 3) USMS 3rd Class Pharmacist Rate on white 4) USMS Merchant Marine Patch on white 5) USMS 2nd Class Steward Rate on Blue 6) USMS 2nd Class Pharmacist Rate on blue 7) USMS 1st Class Pharmacist Rate on tan 8) USMS blue wool patch 9) USMS PX Style patch on white 10) Small USMS patch on white USMS sleeve patch on blue History The merchant marine in the United States was in a state of decline in the mid-1930s. At that time, few ships were being built, existing ships were old and inefficient, maritime unions were at war with one another, ship owners were at odds with the unions, and the crews' efficiency and morale were at an ebb. Congress took action to fix the problems in 1936. The Merchant Marine Act, approved on 29 June 1936, created the U.S. Maritime Commission "to further the development and maintenance of an adequate and well balanced American merchant marine, to promote the commerce of the United States, and to aid in the national defense." The commission realized that a trained merchant marine work force was vital to the national interest. At the request of Congress, the chairman of the Maritime Commission, VADM Emory S. Land worked with ADM Russell R. Waesche, Commandant of the Coast Guard, to formulate a training program for merchant-marine personnel. Called the U.S. Maritime Service, the new training program was inaugurated in 1938. It used a combination of civilian Maritime Commission and uniformed Coast Guard instructors to advance the professional training of merchant mariners. As with the other military services, the entry of the United States into the Second World War necessitated the immediate growth of the merchant marine and the Coast Guard. The Maritime Commission spawned the War Shipping Administration in early February 1942. This new agency received a number of functions considered vital to the war effort, including maritime training. Several weeks after the creation of the new agency, however, the Maritime Service was transferred again to the Coast Guard (on 28 February of that year, under Executive Order 9083; the marine safety aspects of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation (BuMIN) were also transferred to the Coast Guard at this time). The transfer allowed the War Shipping Administration to concentrate on organizing American merchant shipping, building new ships, and carrying cargoes where they were needed most. The Maritime Service was later transferred to another agency, while marine inspection and licensing continued to be Coast Guard missions. The need for administering the merchant marine during wartime was demonstrated during the First World War. Commerce warfare, carried on by submarines and merchant raiders, had a disastrous effect on the Allied merchant fleet. With the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917, U-boats sank ships faster than replacements could be built. The United States intended to meet this crisis with large numbers of mass-produced freighters and transports. When World War II loomed, the Maritime Commission began a crash shipbuilding program utilizing every available resource. The experienced shipyards built complicated vessels, such as warships. New shipyards, which opened almost overnight around the country, generally built less sophisticated ships such as the emergency construction Liberty ships. By 1945 the shipyards had completed more than 2,700 "Liberty" ships and hundreds of Victory ships, tankers and transports. The official song of the Maritime Service and Merchant Marine is "Heave Ho! My Lads, Heave Ho!". It was written by Lieutenant Jack Lawrence (a composer who ultimately served as the president of ASCAP) while he was assigned as the bandleader of the Sheepshead Bay Maritime Service Training Station in Brooklyn, New York. During his Merchant Marine service, Lawrence met his longtime companion, psychologist Walter David Myden.

WWII NAZI GERMAN MEDAL PACKETS PROPAGANDA LEAFLETS

Lot # 334 (Sale Order: 348 of 874)

WWII Nazi German ephemera lot to include 1) MOTHER'S CROSS IN GOLD ISSUE ENVELOPE. Natural tan, mid-weight, paper issue envelope with black printed Gothic script to front, "Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter Erste Stufe". Envelope has a fold back triangular flap, which inserts into a horizontal slash on reverse. Reverse has black printed manufacturers name. Excellent. Introduced by Hitler on December 16TH 1938 as part of a large propaganda campaign aimed at increasing the birth rate. The award was officially designated, Honor Cross of the German Mother, and was instituted in three grades to recognize and reward child bearing German females. The three grades consisted of the bronze cross for bearing four or five children, the silver cross for bearing six or seven children and the gold cross for bearing eight or more children. Criteria for the award included that the parents be of pure German blood, and that the mother was worthy of such an honor. On its introduction the cross had the impressed inscription to reverse, "Das kind adelt die Mutter", (The child ennobles the mother), but this was inexplicably changed sometime in 1939. Bestowal of the cross was accompanied by an award certificate, a cash incentive for each child born and a miniature cross for everyday wear, with the actual cross being reserved for formal or ceremonial occasions. Members of all youth organizations were required to salute wearers of the Mother's Cross. 2) WEST WALL MEDAL ENVELOPE. Light weight, natural tan cardstock, issue envelope with black printed Gothic script in three lines to the obverse, "Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen", (German Defense Wall Honor Award). Top edge of the envelope has a fold over, triangular flap which inserts into a horizontal slash on the envelops reverse for secure closure. Reverse of envelope has black printed Gothic scripted manufacturer's name and location, "Carl Poellath Schrobenhansen". The West Wall Medal was instituted by Adolf Hitler on August 2ND 1939 to recognize military personnel, including civilian employees, who assisted in the planning, construction or defence of German fortifications on the western border. Personnel who had been awarded the October 1ST, and/or the Memel Commemorative Medals were ineligible for award of the West Wall Medal. The original bestowal of the West Wall Medals ceased as of January 1ST 1941. On October 10TH 1944, bestowal of the West Wall Medal was re-instituted as over 200,000 personnel were assigned to strengthen the German fortifications in anticipation of the western allies break-through into Germany. The West Wall Medal was only issued in one class and was to be worn on the left breast suspended from a ribbon. 3) CHERBOURG LEAFLET ABOUT THE COST OF THE CITY. The document says "CHERBOURG... ist nicht nur eine Stadt CHERBOURG IST EINE NIEDERLAGE Deutsche Gesamtverluste in der Normandie bis zur Einnahme von Cherbourg Kriegsgefangen 93,000 Mann 45,687 Mann CHERBOURG IST EIN VERSAGEN DER DEUTSCHEN FÜHRUNG Gefallen: 6 Generäle Kriegsgefangen: 6 Generäle CHERBOURG IST EIN WICHTIGER HAFEN. Dort können die Amerikaner landen: Schwere Panzer Schwere Arie Munition Treibstoff Mannschaften CHERBOURG MACHT TRUPPEN FREI. The Americans can land there: heavy tanks heavy aria ammunition fuel crews CHERBOURG MAKES TROOPS FREE. The American divisions that fought off Cherbourg are now free to use against: ... YOU CHERBOURG is the beginning of the end. Defender of Aachen! The Führer has ordered Aachen to be held. We will carry out this order, come what may. Nothing can jeopardize our steadfastness. Any attempt by the Feincles to dissuade us from this order is simply ridiculous. We know full well that he is just afraid of the fight for the city and wants to take us around on this cheap way after his attacks have failed so far.
