CONFEDERATE WOOD DRUM CANTEEN w/ STRAP

Lot # 217a (Sale Order: 257 of 854)      

Wonderful Confederate wood drum canteen with original butternut cloth strap. Canteen is made of wood held together with 2 riveted iron bands. There are 3 iron strap loops. The cloth strap has wear but is original to the canteen. The corks is a modern replacement. There is a carved initial on each side of canteen. 7 1/2" diameter, 2 1/2" deep. Very Good-Excellent

CONFEDERATE FOOT ARTILLERY SWORD

Lot # 217b (Sale Order: 258 of 854)      

Confederate sword patterned from the Model 1831 French and Model 1832 US foot artillery swords. Cast brass one piece hilt consists of pommel, fish scale grip and quillon. Unlike the the US model 1832 which has 3 iron rivets affixed to the hilt , this one is peened through the pommel. The hilt on this sword is a crude copy of the US model. It has crude cast seams, and factory casting repairs. It has a 14 3/4" spear point, un-fullered blade that is 2 wide at the hilt. The blade has pitting throughout. The sword has been cleaned and is turning back to a patina state. A very interesting Confederate sword. Very Good

CIVIL WAR KETCHUM GRENADE w ORIGINAL FINS, INERT

Original Civil War Ketchum Grenade. Tapered, oval-shaped iron- grenade, 5 1/4” long, 2 1/2” wide at its mid-section. The tail is about 8 1/2" and has heavy paper fins. One fin is marked Patented Aug 20, 1861. At its nose is a convex circular plunger that housed a percussion cap that was designed to detonate on contact. This is a nice example that has been deactivated and has the rare original tail piece. 13 3/4" overall Very Good-Excellent

Beautiful Civil War era bass drum with painted Federal Eagle with shield at breast and 13 stars in the field above. Has iron rope hooks and 7 iron and leather tensioners. The leather is missing on 4 of the tensioners. The drum heads, wood head bands and drum body are nice. There is no label in the viewing hole, but the number 28 is written in pencil. The drum measures 28" diameter, and 17" deep. Very Good-Excellent

INDIAN WARS VETERANS MEDAL MISSOURI W ENVELOPE

Late 19th Century Veteran's medal for the National Indian War Veterans Association. Has horse mounted Native American with war bonnet on the planchet, red and black ribbon, hand-sewn at the back and "VETERAN" metal hanger brooch. Medal is unnamed, but hallmarked on the foot of the cross "St. Louis Button Co.". The ribbon has gilt lettering, which reads "Winners of the West Camp No. 11 St. Joseph Missouri." Ribbon is somewhat brittle and dry, but very well preserved. Also comes on original card, with original envelope from St. Louis Button Co. Excellent

Lot # 221 (Sale Order: 265 of 854)      

Felt hat with rolled brim, hat band, and hemmed brim. Has wreathed "G.A.R." Grand Army of the Republic badge in the center which is mounted to a black velvet pad and hand sewn to the hat. Also has black & gold had cord with bullion wire gold "acorns." Inside the hat, there is a Union Hatters of North America paper tag covered with plastc. Remnants of a name and order tag on the opposite side of the interior of the hat. Comes in original paper over cardboard hatbox, made by Dunlap of New York. Paper shipping label affixed to bottom of the box has pencil written name "W. W. Norton" and an address. Leather strap has deteriorated and come off the box, and there is some damage to the edges of the lid, but this has preserved the hat remarkably well. Excellent

SPAN AM WAR COMBAT WORN M1899 CAMPAIGN HAT 8th INF

Lot # 221c (Sale Order: 268 of 854)      

Spanish American War US Army M1899 Campaign hat. Identified to Company D, 8th US Infantry. Left side of hat shows original inked unit ID of crossed infantry rifles with the number "8" above and the letter "D" below. Company D of the 8th US Infantry participated in combat operations in Cuba during the war and occupation duty in Puerto Rico after the end of hostilities. The hat has good form, and a stable brim, but does exhibit extensive moth tracking with a few holes. Inside the leather sweatband and haberdasher stamp is intact. Three rows of stitching along the brim. Despite damage, this hat is a rarity - very, very few of these have survived in any condition, and even fewer original combat worn examples are known to exist. Very Good

Kepi was made by M.C. Lilley of Columbus Ohio. Lilley made military goods from the 1870's to about 1910. Kepi features Vermont state buttons, officers gold braid and bullion VT and 11. The buttons are early brass back Scoville buttons. Missing front part of sweat band. Light soiling and a couple of moth nips. Very Good

LATE 19th CENTURY MASSACHUSETTS 1ST CADETS SHAKO

Lot # 221f (Sale Order: 271 of 854)      

Post-Civil War era Masachusetts shako hat with plume. "Monstrat Viam" (It Points the Way) Crest on the front -- the motto of the 1st Corps of Cadets for the state of Massachusetts, a military officer training unit which existed between 1741 and World War II. This cap dates from 1868 to 1872, when the Massachusetts First Corps redesigned their uniforms to incorporate a black felt Shako. Cap retains crest, blue and white plume, leather chinstrap, Massachusetts state buttons, leather brim, and has maker's mark inside the crown. Leather around the crown is damaged in a few places, but is stable. Brim intact. Slight damage to the sweatband and light traces of tracking on the felt. Very Good

Has cross saber cavalry buttons, original leather chinstrap (missing one of the retaining loops), "VR" cap badge, leather brim and crown, leather sweatband, and original paper label in the crown identifying the maker as G.W. Simmons & Co. Military Goods of 32 to 44 North Street , Oak Hall, Boston Massachusetts. Size and owner's name are handwritten - 6 7/8. The trooper's name is illegible. Has officer's braiding on the back in the form of a bullion trefoil. Cap shows age, and right side of brim has come unstitched slightly. Very Good

Identified Spanish American War cabinet card photograph depicting a soldier wearing Mills belt with Krag bayonet affixed to it, wearing a Model 1899 Campaign cap, field uniform, and holding a Krag rifle. Handwritten on the back, "Compliments of Granville Davis. Com. K, 8th U.S. Inf. Havana Cuba, May 15th 1899." Photo taken by R Testar in Havana, credits written in spanish. Davis served overseas from December 15th 1898 to November 4, 1901, serving in Cuba and the Philippines. Picture card has some wear around the edges and discoloration from age but is otherwise solid and very clear. 5.75" x 4.25" Very Good

Multi piece construction with a brass horizontal mounting bar. Single sided. Near Mint
