WWII NAZI GERMAN OFFICERS BELT BUCKLE oLc

Lot # 362a (Sale Order: 451 of 854)

Die struck, aluminum alloy construction belt buckle. The horizontally oval, buckle features an embossed, oak-leave wreath to the outside edge encompassing a slightly domed, pebbled field, with a separate early "droop tailed" pattern Luftwaffe eagle clutching a canted swastika in it’s talons to the center. The eagle is secured to the buckle a small, dome headed rivet which is visible on the reverse. Buckle is maker marked to "oLc". The Reichsluftwaffe was official established on February 26TH 1935 as the third branch of service of the Armed Forces. On March 9TH 1935 the formation of the new Reichsluftwaffe was announced to the foreign press and on March 16TH conscription was reintroduced for all three branches of service. On May 21ST 1935 the Reichsluftwaffe designation was altered to Luftwaffe. On its inception the Luftwaffe adopted most of the uniform items of the earlier DLV, Deutscher Luftsport Verband, (German Air Sports League), and the DLV Fliegerschaft, (Pilot Base) the clandestine, civilian, forerunners of the Luftwaffe, including the Officer’s brocade dress belt. Originally the brocade belt was worn with the circular, DLV political style, belt buckle until the Luftwaffe Officers belt buckle was introduced on May 20TH 1935. The brocade belt and the new style belt buckle were for wear by Officers when in parade, or formal dress and service dress when full decoration were ordered. The new Officer’s belt buckle was produced in two, slightly different versions with the first version featuring the early, "droop tailed" pattern Luftwaffe eagle, (Circa 1934-1936/1937), while the later version featured the second pattern, flare-tailed Luftwaffe eagle, (Circa 1936/37-1945). During the Third Reich there was a prescribed form of wear of the belt and buckle with the buckle being positioned on the right side. Regulations of February 12TH 1940 discontinued wear of the brocade belt and buckle but it was still worn on formal occasions when ordered. Officers ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniform items, including the brocade belt and buckle, and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the Luftwaffe’s Verkaufsabteilung, (Air-Force Sales Department), system. The Officers could choose to purchase their items from the armed forces clothing depots or to privately purchase items of higher quality.

WWII NAZI GERMAN SS ADOLF HITLER CUFFTITLE w TAG

Lot # 363a (Sale Order: 453 of 854)

Nice quality machine woven black rayon cufftitle with machine embroidered "Adolf Hitler" in gray threads. The cufftitle is bordered at both the top and bottom edges in horizontally woven seven strand bright silver/aluminum threads. The full length cufftitle is roughly 27mm wide and 46cm long with folded over stitched ends. Reverse has a white, paper RZM/SS tag with black printed script and the red ink stamped manufacturer’s numerical code. The printed script to the tag includes both the RZM logo and the SS runes within circular borders. The cufftitle is in overall excellent un-issued condition with minimal age toning. The cufftitle was worn by personnel serving with the 1.SS-Panzer-Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler and was the first pattern of this cuffband. The 1.SS-Panzer-Division LSSAH, (Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler), the premier unit of the Waffen-SS, (Armed-SS), had evolved from the Stabswache (Headquarter Guards), that were originally formed in March 1923. From its original inception it served under numerous designations until the tenth anniversary of the failed Beer Hall Putsch on the night of November 8TH/9TH 1933 when Hitler bestowed them with the honor title, Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, (Life Regiment Adolf Hitler). The LSSAH underwent further expansions and designation until October 22ND 1943 when it received its final designation as 1.SS-Panzer-Division LSSAH, (Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler). The LSSAH personnel were first authorized wear of an honorary cufftitle, with Gothic style script, as early as September 1933. In 1934 the script on the cufftitle was changed to the Sütterlin style and remain in this form until the end of the war. The cufftitle underwent minor manufacturing variants through-out the war. Of Note: It is believed the BeVo machine woven pattern "Adolf Hitler" cufftitles were first introduced in 1943. Of Note: The RZM, Reichzeugmeisterei, (National Equipment Quartermaster), was official founded in June 1934 in Munich by the NSDAP as a Reich Hauptamt, (State Central Office), and was based on the earlier SA Quartermaster’s Department. The functions of the RZM were not only to procure and distribute items to Party formations, but also to approve chosen designs and to act as a quality control supervisor to ensure items manufactured for the Party met required specification and were standardized. Starting in late 1934 items manufactured for the SS came under the quality control of the RZM and were marked by a cloth RZM/SS approval tag. The dimensions and design of these cloth tags was altered in 1935 and this second pattern tag remained in use until early 1938, when it was replaced by a paper tag. In 1943 the Waffen-SS assumed full control over their uniform item production and no longer fell under the authority of the RZM.

WWII NAZI GERMAN OFFICERS AFRIKA CUFFTITLE

Lot # 364 (Sale Order: 455 of 854)

Woven, brushed, khaki/tan, camelhair construction cufftitle features machine embroidered, capitalized Latin script, "Afrika", flanked by palm trees to either side in silvery/gray rayon threads. The top and bottom edges of the cufftitle are bordered in machine stitched on, horizontal, silver bullion Russian braiding. The cufftitle has both the top and bottom edges machine stitched down to the reverse and has the typical opened back revealing the reverse of the embroidered script. The cufftitle is in overall very good condition with light age and usage toning. In late 1940 the Germans began the hasty formation of the DAK, Deutsches Afrikakorps, (German Africa Corps), under command of, then Generalmajor, later Generalfeldmarschall, Erwin Rommel, as an expeditionary force to assist their Italian allies in the disastrous North African campaign. The first units of the DAK arrived in Tripoli in February 1941 and under Rommel’s inspired leadership the DAK and their Italian allies were soon able to push the British back and bring some stability to the region. As a result of the German OKW, Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, (High Command of the Armed Forces), preoccupation with the invasion and battles in Russia and a lack of adequate supplies and reinforcements, the DAK would finally be defeated by the British in May 1943. Of Note: On July 18TH 1941, an "Afrikakorps" cufftitle was officially introduced for wear by personnel serving with the DAK. The "Afrika" cufftitle was introduced on January 15TH 1943 and was the second cufftitle in a series of four that held the status of a campaign award. The cufftitle was considered a military combat decoration, and as such, was bestowed with a corresponding award possession document. The basic criteria for award of the "Afrika" cufftitle, was a minimum of six months service in the African campaign, although personnel who had been wounded, contracted a tropical illness, or had won a military award, regardless of the time served in the African theatre were also entitled bestowal of the award. Of Note: With the introduction of the "Afrika" cufftitle the previously worn "Afrikakorps" cufftitle was ordered removed. Although the "Afrika" cufftitle was a campaign award most personnel who had worn the "Afrikakorps" cufftitle would have been eligible for award of the "Afrika" cufftitle. Also Of Note: The four campaign award cufftitles consisted of the "Kreta", (Crete), introduced on October 16TH 1942, the "Afrika" cufftitle introduced on January 15TH 1943, the "Metz" cufftitle introduced on October 24TH 1944 and the "Kurland", (Courland), cufftitle introduced on March 12TH 1945.

This very rarely encountered cufftitle is for the 7th SS-Freiwillingen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen", with the title name: "Prinz Eugen”. This cufftitle is likely for a NCO; the Division title "Prinz Eugen” is machine woven BeVo like with letters in silver/gray thread across the face of the band, with segmented border stripes at the top and bottom edges woven in the same and the reverse side in salt and pepper pattern (the title letters appear as a negative image (reversed) within a denser band of thread). The cufftitle measures just under 18” long, with the ends lightly frayed and other than for this and some minimal edge fraying, is in great condition. The 7TH SS-Freiwillingen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen" was originally formed in March of 1942, and was the first Waffen-SS division to be composed primarily of ethnic Germans, (Volksdeutsche) from the Balkan countries of Serbia and Croatia. The division was formed as an anti-partisan unit and spent most of the war in this role in Yugoslavia. (October 1942-May 1945). In April 1942 the division was accorded the honor title "Prinz Eugen" after the Austrian Prince, Eugene of Savoy, who along with the Hungarian Janos Hunyadi had driven the Turks out of Hungary in the battle of Zenta in 1697. After being allocated the Prinz Eugen honor title all divisional personnel were authorized wear of a scripted cufftitle until November 13TH 1944 when the 13TH SS-Freiwillingen-Gebirgs-Regiment was authorized the "Artur Phelps" cufftitle in honor of their fallen divisional commander SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen-SS Artur Phelps who was killed by the Russians on September 21ST 1944. Of Note: In spite of the, "Freiwillingen", (Volunteer), designation in the division’s title, most of the Volksdeutsche were actually conscripted. Also Of Note: The RZM, Reichzeugmeisterei, (National Equipment Quartermaster), was official founded in June 1934 in Munich by the NSDAP as a Reich Hauptamt, (State Central Office), and was based on the earlier SA Quartermaster’s Department.

This Bevo-like weave is discussed and photographed in G. Williamson & T. McGuirl’s book, German Military Cuffbands 1784~Present, page 169, and also in Ulric of England’s book, A Collectors Guide to SS and Political Cuffbands, pages 72, 73 and 74. WWII NAZI GERMAN LUFTWAFFE KRETA CUFFTILE

Lot # 371 (Sale Order: 462 of 854)

Subtly ribbed woven white cotton/rayon blend construction cufftitle with machine embroidered block Latin script "Kreta" flanked on either side by ornate acanthus leaves all in bright golden yellow cotton threads. The script stands out in nice high relief while the leaf ornamentation is slightly lower. The cufftitle is bordered at both the top and bottom edges in bright golden yellow rayon Russian braiding. The acanthus leaves are the typical type with seven petals to each side. The cufftitle has the typical opened back construction. Very Good The "Kreta", (Crete), cufftitle was the first in a series of four, campaign award, cufftitles and was introduced on October 16TH 1942, for award to personnel who participated in the successful assault on the Greek, Mediterranean island of Crete from May 20TH to June 1ST 1941. The cufftitle was considered a military combat decoration, and as such, was bestowed with a corresponding award possession document and entered into the recipient’s official military service documentation. Bestowal of the award was opened to personnel in all three branches of service who had actively been involved in the invasion of Crete. The "Kreta" cufftitle was worn on the lower left sleeve of the field blouse, service tunic and greatcoat by all eligible personnel with no differentiation for rank. Of Note: The "Kreta" cufftitle utilized acanthus leaves as ornamentation which is a perennial herb or shrub native to the Mediterranean area and has been used through-out ancient history as ornamentation in art and architecture. The acanthus leaves symbolize quality, strength, longevity and creativity. The "Kreta" cufftitle was manufactured in two slightly different versions with one version having seven acanthus leaf petals and the other with nine. Due to the significant role that the German Fallschirmjäger, (Paratroopers), played in the successful invasion they were awarded a large percentage of the "Kreta" cufftitles. Of Note: The Greek, Mediterranean island of Crete was very strategically important to the Allies affording them secure naval harbors in the eastern Mediterranean and airfields within range of the significant, German allied, Romanian oilfields. Although the German’s had successfully utilized it’s Paratrooper and Glider borne Infantry on a limited basis, in Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Holland, France and Greece, Unternehmen Merkur, (Operation Mercury), launched on May 20TH 1941, the German assault on Crete, was the first, primarily, airborne assault ever mounted with roughly half of the German participants being Paratrooper and Glider borne Infantry personnel. Although the operation was a success the German airborne casualties were considered so high by Hitler it prompted him to reevaluate German airborne assault doctrine and allegedly declare to Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, (later Oak-leaves to the Knight’s Cross holder), General der Flieger Kurt Student, that the ultimately important, surprise element of the Paratroopers had been eliminated and as a result the German’s never launched another large airborne assault during the remainder of the war. Also Of Note: The other three campaign award cufftitles consisted of the "Afrika" cufftitle as introduced on January 15TH 1943, the "Metz" cufftitle as introduced on October 24TH 1944 and the "Kurland", (Courland), cufftitle as introduced on March 12TH 1945.

WWII NAZI GERMAN ARMY AFRIKA CUFFTITLE

Lot # 372 (Sale Order: 463 of 854)

Woven brushed khaki/tan camelhair construction cufftitle features machine embroidered capitalized Latin script "Afrika" flanked by palm trees to either side in silvery/grey rayon threads. The top and bottom edges of the cufftitle are bordered in machine stitched on horizontal silvery/grey rayon Russian braiding. The cufftitle has both the top and bottom edges machine stitched down to the reverse and has the typical opened back revealing the reverse of the embroidered script.

WWII NAZI UNTEROFFIZIERVORSCHULE CUFFTITLE

Lot # 372a (Sale Order: 464 of 854)

Green rayon construction cufftitle with machine woven Gothic style script "Unteroffiziervorschule" in bright silver/aluminum flat-wire threads. The cufftitle is bordered at both the top and bottom edges in vertically woven bright silver/aluminum flat-wire threads. The reverse of the cufftitle has loosely woven vertical silver/aluminum flat-wire threads and shows the script in a green rayon mirror image. Excellent The German army went to great lengths to ensure its personnel were provided with the best in-depth training that was available at the time. The training took many forms and in an attempt to replicate the most realistic combat conditions possible the German army used live fire training exercises and found a one percent training fatality rate as acceptable, reasoning it was better to remove inadequate personnel in training as opposed to having them risk other lives in actual battle. Besides the live field training and exercises the Germans also established the Unteroffiziervorschule, (NCO Preparatory School), on April 1ST 1940. As the name implies the NCO preparatory schools were established to train future NCO’s with emphasis placed on leadership and personal initiative. On establishment of the NCO Preparatory Schools a specific, Unteroffiziervorschule, cufftitle was introduced which was intended for wear by both the cadre personnel and students of the NCO preparatory schools. The cadre personnel wore the uniform of the last unit they had served with before assignment to the schools with the addition of the, "UV", shoulder board/strap cyphers and the Unteroffiziervorschule cufftitle. The students wore a slightly modified style of uniform that included fold back French cuffs and the unique old Prussian style litzen collar tabs. The students were recruited from the 14 to 17 year old age group and the school programs ran for three years. While attending the courses the students retained their civilian status and were designated, Jungschützen, (Junior Riflemen).

Although the Luger was favored by the troops it was expensive to produced and was prone to allowing dirt into the toggle breech affecting its firing. In 1938 the Heereswaffenamt accepted the new P38 pistol, developed by the Carl Walther Waffenfabrik. The new P38 pistol didn’t completely replace the Luger which was still being manufactured until 1943 when it was finally discontinued. The P38 originally came in a molded "hardshell" holster until a "softshell" holster was introduced in late 1943.
Early pattern smooth molded blackened leather construction "hardshell" P38 pistol holster. The holster features a scalloped fold over top flap with a horizontally stitche...mored hinged seam to the reverse top edge and a stitched on vertical leather closure strap to the obverse. The obverse closure strap has a corresponding horizontally oval rivetted on sheet metal plate with a cut-out horizontal slot situated on the front of the fold over top flap with a corresponding raised horizontal steel bar on a horizontally oval sheet metal plate rivetted on the front body of the holster. For secure closure the raised steel bar on the body of the holster is inserted through the sheet metal slot on the oval plate of the top flap and the vertical strap is in turn inserted through the raised bar. The forward edge of the holster body has a vertical stitched on extra magazine pocket. The reverse of the holster has two slightly diagonally angled stitched on leather belt loops. Makers mark CWW. The interior of the holster has a quick release strap stitched to both the top flap and the internal body. Shows the expected light period use and wear but overall excellent condition. WWII NAZI GERMAN LOT OF 2 MP38/40 MAGAZINES FXO 41

Lot # 373a (Sale Order: 467 of 854)

Lot of two blued stamped magnetic sheet metal thirty-two cartridge capacity stick magazines. The obverse of the magazine also has a small circular punched viewing port with impressed capacity numeral "32". The magazines are well marked with stamped designation "M.P.38u.40" dual Waffenamt stamps and the manufacturers code and date, "fxo 41". The development of a German sub-machine gun can be traced back to World War I when the requirements for a light weight, quick firing, close combat weapon which could be utilized by a single man was needed in the close quarter, static warfare of the trenches. The primary weapons of the time, the slow firing repeater rifle and the relatively immobile machine gun were found insufficient and the Spandau Rifle Testing Commission began research on developing a sub-machine gun in late 1915. In 1917 the Germans introduced their first sub-machine gun, designated the MP18/I, which was to be the forerunner of all the MP’s to follow. In August 1938 the German army adopted the newly developed MP38. Further developments and improvements and the need for a cheaper mass produced weapon resulted in the introduction of the MP40 in April 1940. The MP38 and the MP40 both utilized a bottom loaded, thirty-two cartridge stick magazine.

On June 17TH 1936, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler was appointed to the newly created position of Chef der Deutschen Polizei im Reichsministerium des Innern, (Chief of the German Police in the National Ministry of the Interior), effectively giving him full control of all police agencies within Germany. As a result of this appointment and the restructuring of all the separate German state police into a single national police force new regulations were instituted on June 25TH 1936 to bring about uniformity in dress for all police through-out the country. One of the new uniform regulations dictated the color of all leather accoutrements according to branch of service with the Ordnungspolizei (Order Police), the Schutzpolizei, (Protection Police), and Gemeindepolizei, (Local Municipal Police), personnel wearing black leather while Gendarmerie, (Rural Police), and Polizeibeamten, (Police Officials), personnel wore brown leather. Of Note: The Ordnungspolizei, Schutzpolizei, and Gemeindepolizei, also utilized white leather accoutrements for special occasions. Regulations also dictated that all ranks wore a pistol on the right side of the waist belt for the standard service dress and a wide variety of pistols and holsters were utilized including the standard P08 Luger. The P08 Luger pistol was developed by George Luger who has served in the Austro-Hungarian army before gaining employment with the Ludwig Löwe & Cie armaments factory in Berlin in 1891. While employed with the Löwe firm Luger examined the Borchardt pistol they manufactured which had proven to be troublesome due to its awkward recoil and bolt return system. Luger redesigned the Borchardt pistol with a cleaner design and systems and in 1899 the first Borchardt-Luger pistol was tested. The Borchardt-Luger pistol underwent minor modifications and was accepted by the Swiss army in 1900. Further modifications in 1902 resulted in the Luger being re-calibered from 7.65mm to the standard 9mm Parabellum cartridge. The new Luger pistol was adopted by the Imperial German Navy in 1904 and by the German army in 1908, which led to its official designation, "P08". The P08 Luger pistol saw service through-out WWI, during the Reichswehr era and on into the Third Reich. Although popular, the pistol was expensive to produce and the design of the toggle breech made it prone to dirt entry after firing which affected its performance. In 1938 the weapons firm of Carl Walther developed the P38 pistol as a replacement for the P08. Although the P38 never fully replaced the P08, manufacture of the Luger was discontinued in 1943.

WWII NAZI GERMAN SINGLE ENGRAVED BAYONET

Lot # 376 (Sale Order: 470 of 854)

Roughly 20cm long nickel/silver plated drop forged steel construction blade with deep fullers to each side and a top edge swedge to the forward tip. The blade is in overall good condition with light scabbard runner marks. The obverse of the blade features an acid etched design with an embossed bright nickel/silver plated Gothic scripted dedication, "Zur Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit", (In Remembrance of my Service time). Maker marked to "E. Pack & Sohne". The leather washer is present. Stud button functions. The bayonet has a nickel/silver plated alloy crossguard with one up-swept arm a flash guard and a stylized eagle head pommel. The bayonet has stag handled construction grips which are secured to the hilt by two, small slot headed steel rivets. The bayonet comes complete with its original black painted sheet metal scabbard that retains about 95% of its original black finish. The inserted throat throat retaining screw and the frog lug are intact. Inserted green felt plug for Jäger. Complete with original brown leather frog and troddel. Excellent During the Third Reich period numerous blade manufacturers produced customized, private purchase versions of the S84/98 and KS98 bayonets for dress wear. The dress bayonets were manufactured with an assortment of minor optional variations with a long model, (24.5cm), blade for enlisted personnel and a shorter, (20cm), blade for NCO’s and Officers. Due to the dress bayonets similarity to the issue bayonets they experienced slow sales and the F. W. Höller firm of Solingen attempted to increase demand by marketing the dress bayonets as the "Pionier", (Engineer), models, although they were available to personnel in all branches of service. It is not known if the marketing strategy was successful in increasing sales but it did result in the dress bayonets commonly being referred to as "Pioniere Extrawaffe". A popular option offered by the blade manufacturers was an acid etched motif on the blade for a nominal extra cost. Most of the etched designs were of a standard pattern that were applied by the use of a template and were copyrighted by the manufacturing firm. Additionally more personalized etched designs were also available at an extra cost. As with the K98 bayonets the dress bayonets were accompanied by a bayonet frog to be worn on the reverse left side of the weight bearing waist belt. Generally when purchased the dress bayonets also came with a colored, felt "plug", at no extra cost, to be inserted in the "TO", slot on the pommel with a red felt plug for most armed forces personnel and a green felt plug for Jäger, (Light Infantry), personnel. Of Note: Luftwaffe personnel also utilized red, green, golden yellow and brown dress bayonet felt plugs depending on their actual branch of service.

Early example by a seldom encountered "cottage" manufacturer. The SA, Sturm Abteilung, (Storm/Assault Detachment), was originally formed in the August 1921 as a protective guard unit for the political leaders of the fledgling NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), and as with the NSDAP the SA was structure along para-military lines. The SA recruited most of its personnel from the ranks of the various Freikorps, (Free Corps), groups composed mainly of disgruntled, ex-WWI soldiers and was first utilized at a NSDAP meeting in Munich in November 1921.The SA M33 service dagger was the first dagger officially sanctioned by the NSDAP and was introduced on December 15TH 1933. The dagger was intended as an ornamental item and the design was adapted by Professor Woenne of the Solingen School of Commerce who had based it on the traditional 16TH century, Swiss "Holbein", "Baselard" or "Basilard", hunting dagger with the original design being attributed to the Hans Holbein the Younger, (Circa 1497-1543). Originally the daggers featured an anodized scabbard and utilized nice quality, solid, nickel/silver fittings while later models had cheaper, nickel/silver plated fittings and painted scabbards. Regulations dictated that the daggers were to worn on the left side of the waist belt suspended by a specific, dagger hanger. In late 1934 items manufactured for the SA including daggers and accoutrements came under the quality control of the RZM, Reichzeugmeisterei, (National Equipment Quartermaster) and as a result were marked with the RZM logo when appropriate. Of Note: The RZM was official founded in June 1934 in Munich by the NSDAP as a Reich Hauptamt, (State Central Office), and was based on the earlier SA Quartermaster’s Department. The functions of the RZM were not only to procure and distribute items to Party formations, but also to approve chosen designs and to act as a quality control supervisor to ensure items manufactured for the Party met required specification and were standardized. Production of the SA M33 dagger was discontinued sometime in 1943. Of Note: Other daggers initiated by the SA included the Marine-SA Dagger, circa 1933-34, originally with black grip and scabbard and later with brown grip and scabbard but with brass colored fittings, the short lived, (Circa February 3RD 1934-July 4TH 1934), SA-Stabschef, (SA-Chief of Staff), Ernst Röhm Dedication Dagger with the inscription, "In herzlicher Freundschaft Ernst Röhm", (In heartfelt Friendship Ernst Röhm). After Röhm’s demise the new SA-Stabschef, Viktor Lutze introduced the SA Honour Dagger, circa 1935, the SA Standarte Feldhernnhalle Dagger, circa 1937, the SA High Leader’s Honour Dagger, circa 1938 and the Special SA Presentation Dagger circa 1938-39.

The blade is as nice as they come. It is in full mint condition with fine brightness and 100% of the original crossgrain. The SA motto retains 100% of the original darkening and remains crisp.
