His inclined head features bulging eyes, a pronounced mustache over his mischievious grin, and long wavy hair that cascades down his back. This example also boasts some shiny sections that are characteristic of the type created in Palembang, once the capital of the Srivijaya Empire, a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished from the 7th to the 12th century and stretched from Sumatra to the Kra Isthmus in southern Thailand. Sumatra, Palembang 19th Century Keris, wonderful example of the Jawa Demam design Type embraced throughout Indonesia known for its distinct shape that blends sloping contours, crisp edges, and dramatic curves. this example is most impressive for the elaborate carving. Just look at those spiraled eyes, magnificently carved scrollwork and stylized geometric motifs covering the body, not to mention the fine wavelike border just above the temple. This example also boasts some shiny sections that are characteristic of the type created in Palembang, once the capital of the Srivijaya Empire, a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished from the 7th to the 12th century and stretched from Sumatra to the Kra Isthmus in southern Thailand. Provenance: Ex- private collection of Ami Brown. Mr. Brown was the owner of the Coca Cola franchise in Israel and amassed a huge and very fine collection of Indonesian Kris's as well as other ethnographic and tribal arts. His collection numbered more than 3000 pieces with many on display during his life in the Ein Harod Museum of Art.

Java or Bali Island 19th Century Wood Kris (keris) Handle in the form of a Barong Lion-like creature and character in the mythology of Bali, Indonesia with a dramatically inclined head and stunning wavy locks and woven robe. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all spirit guarder in the mythological traditions of Bali. Dark paginated hard wood carved in an abstract form representing a standing deity with animated facial features and scrolled artwork representing his long flowing hair and a robe. Masterpiece! Sumatra Island, Palembang area 18th Century Early and superb wooden kris (keris) handle depicting a fevered Sumatran Seated in the classic seated position with the right arm placed behind the shoulder to hold the shawl intended to keep his body from becoming cold and feverish. This said the large bird's head that appears to be difficult to hold up may belong to Vishnu's famous eagle Garuda. Deep brown (almost black) hard wood carved in an abstract form with extensive floral (Madura) decoration throughout. Provenance: Ex- private collection of Ami Brown.
