WWII NAZI GERMAN DUG M40 ARMY HELMET FROM RUSSIA

Lot # 589 (Sale Order: 697 of 854)

Dug Russian front helmet is an M40 army helmet with no liner but still retains one of it's original pins. Poor The first "modern" steel helmets were introduced by the French army in early 1915 and were shortly followed by the British army later that year. With plans on the drawing board, experimental helmets in the field, ("Gaede" helmet), and some captured French and British helmets the German army began tests for their own steel helmet at the Kummersdorf Proving Grounds in November, and in the field in December 1915. An acceptable pattern was developed and approved and production began at Eisen-und Hüttenwerke, AG Thale/Harz, in the spring of 1916. These first modern M16 helmets evolved into the M18 helmets by the end of WWI. At the end of WWI it is estimated that Germany had produced about 8,500,000 steel helmets. As a result of the restrictions placed on the German’s by the Treaty of Versailles, which dictated a standing army of only 100,000 personnel, there was an abundant surplus of these helmets, and though they saw widespread use by Freikorps personnel, there was still a stockpile controlled by the Reichswehr. These excess helmets underwent minor modifications in 1923 with the addition of provincial identifying shield decals and in 1931 with the development of a new chinstrap and liner system. Although helmet development was ongoing when Hitler came to power in 1933, the M16 and M18 helmets were still the main headgear worn by the Reichswehr. The helmets remained the same until March 1933 when the provincial shields were discontinued in favour of the national tri-color shield. In 1934 the national eagle shield was introduced, and both the tri-color and eagle shields were applied to the helmets. After the development of the new M35 helmet , the WWI helmets were still issued to second line and training troops well into WWII. The Austrian M16 was almost identical to the German version with the positioning of the chinstrap liner rivets being the most readily identifiable difference.

On April 29TH 1933 the Deutscher Luftschutzverband was renamed RLB, Reichs Luftschutz Bund, (National Air Raid Protection League) and was given status as an official national organization tasked with all aspects of civil air raid defence. The RLB remained a voluntary organization with a small cadre of paid, full-time, uniformed officials to oversee the organizations functions until June 1935 when obligatory service was introduced. Only the most basic uniform and equipment items were supplied to the cadre personnel, with the rest having to be bought personally by members. On September 26TH 1938 a specific helmet for RLB personnel was introduced that incorporated a raised horizontal "bead" between the visors and crown. These helmets commonly called the "Gladiator" style were supplemented with M35, M40 and M42 helmets that also incorporated a raised horizontal "bead" between the visors and crown. The Luftschutz also utilized a variety of captured helmets.

WW1 IMPERIAL GERMAN GRANATWERFER PRIEST MORTAR

Lot # 592 (Sale Order: 700 of 854)

At the border between grenade launcher and minenwerfers the Priest Mortar is a little trench weapon designed in 1915 by Austria. Called Granatwerfer (grenade launcher) by the Germans that massively used it, this light (45 kg) and easily transportable weapon was simply composed with a base plate supporting a orientable mandrel equipped with a spring percussion mechanism. The Granatwerfer explosive grenade was made with an externally prefragmented ovoid, then cylindrical steel body, mounted at its base on a hollow mantle wearing 3 to 4 winglets, and at its head with a simple percussion fuse. The propelling charge was just a blank mauser cartridge included in a shaft penetrating inside the grenade body at the top of the mantle. At firing time, the detonator was added on the fuze and mounted on the grenade the projectile tail was slipped on the launcher mandrel that had been orientated before, the safety pin was removed, and the launching triggered by pulling on a rope connected to the trigger. This action projected a pin to the base of the blank cartridge located at the bottom of the grenade tail, and provoked the projectile take off on a trajectory stabilized by the winglets to a maximum range of 250 m. At impact, the explosion was ordered by the head percussion fuse connected to a denotator dipped in the explosive charge. This weapon was feared by the allied soldiers because of its stealth the departure sound being very low and the flight silent with the exception of a flying pigeon hence the nickname. Body is still good condition but missing fins.
At the border between grenade launcher and minenwerfers the Priest Mortar is a little trench weapon designed in 1915 by Austria. Called Granatwerfer (grenade launcher) by...more the Germans that massively used it, this light (45 kg) and easily transportable weapon was simply composed with a base plate supporting a orientable mandrel equipped with a spring percussion mechanism.
