Samoa Island Polynesia 19th Century Fighting Weapon, given by German Colonial Governor to Samoan Chiefs Hooked blade with fiber-wrapped handle. Overall length approximately 36" with 20" handle. Blade measures 14." Blade has etching "NAIFI TAUA SAMOA" on the side. Note: there are 5 or so notches on Hand grip meaning the Chief has killed that many enemies in Battle!!! Provenance: Hawaii Coll.

Sumatra or Indo Malay Peninsula 18th Century A wonderful Jawa Demam hilt carved in betel nut with a characteristically abstract form Inclined bird head and a body comprised of stylized geometric motifs. Jawa Demam represents a deity that is half bird and half human, most likely a Garuda, depicted in a squatting position and holding its sides as if shivering in the cold. Interestingly, the word Demam literally means fever in Bahasa. Gorgeous patina. Provenance: Ex- private collection of Ami Brown. Simple and sleek drum carved of single piece of hardwood, with repeating registers of zig zag bands around tapered middle, and squared handle along one side. Burma 19th Century 2 small gongs: "Kyeezee" Approximately 5.5" x 4" The Kyeezee is a triangular shaped piece of bronze. Often decorated, carved, and quite thick in cross-section. It is suspended on a cord at its midpoint. When it is struck, it has a piercing, bell-like tone and spinning the Kyeezee gives a warbling effect. They are often used in meditation.
