19th C TIBETAN SILVER PLATED IRON LEATHER BELT

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. late 19th to early 20th centuries CE. A remarkable belt comprised of five substantial silver-plated iron plaques attached to a wide leather strip - three very large panels and two smaller ones that are linked to a two-part clasp shaped like a yoke - all meticulously decorated with intricately incised geometric designs that resemble labyrinths. Two openwork silver-plated iron danglers further embellish opposite sides of the belt. A cast bronze boss-like buckle from a horse saddle, with an engraved pattern of flowers on an interlaced metal symbol that recalls the Kalachakra, the "wheel of time," an important concept for teaching and practice in Tibetan Buddhism. The openwork, interlaced bars are set within a broad border that rolls upward at its outer edge. Applied to the back of the buckle are two strips for attachment. Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th century CE. A cast yellow bronze royal seal in the form of a cylinder capped by a flame-like form. This item was used by high officials in the Tibetan Royal Court to certify the text of decrees. The upper body and flame have ornate cast decoration, giving them a textured appearance; the lower part of the cylinder is smooth and hollow. A tall, cylindrical tea cup with a concentric ring base, tall walls with finely-carved linear and geometric designs, an inward-sloped lip, and a thin hammered brass sheet around the perimeter. A petite lid with a button-shaped handle with three conical ornaments accompanies the cup, allowing the tea to stay warm when being transported. Tibet, 19th to early 20th century CE. Quite exceptional iron Dorje / Kartika knife. Copper Dorje or Vajra, a ritual object associated with Tibetan Buddhism with four spokes meeting at a raised center support. The Kartika blade is also associated with Vajrayana Buddhism and is a ritualistic flaying knife - probably never used for such purposes - but certainly used in tantric ceremonies. Custom stand. Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A ceremonial iron knife with a curved blade terminating in a hook on one end whose form is reminiscent of an abstract bird. The handle is cast on, made of bronze, in the form of a mythical bird's head topped by a dorje. The dorje, an instantly recognizable symbol of Tibetan Buddhism, represents the moment of Enlightenment. This type of knife is known as a Kartika, and it is designed to be used for ritual flaying in Tantric ceremonies. The form is derived from the traditional Indian butcher's knife. A nice example of a cast bronze dorje (vajra), in the form of two openwork, cage-like spheres at either end, joined together below two bases for each sphere. These are separated by a discoid that is the center of the dorje. The dorje, an instantly recognizable symbol of Tibetan Buddhism, represents the moment of Enlightenment. Vajra means both thunderbolt and diamond, symbolizing an irresistible force and indestructibility. In ceremony, the dorje/vajra is almost always paired with a bell. Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th century CE. A cast bronze statue of the god Ganesha (Ganesh), seated on a throne, attributes to either side of his head. The statue may once have been gilded. Ganesha, the elephant-headed patron of arts and sciences, revered for his intellect and wisdom, is nicely displayed here. His head faces the viewer, a decorative crown around his broad forehead. He has a human-like body, with a large belly - a feature of the god's depiction that first appeared in the Gupta Period. Peeking out between his feet is his vahana (mount), a mouse. He is depicted here standing on a hollow pedestal, with a necklace bearing multiple lingams, phallic objects of divine power. The vahana, meaning in Sanskrit "that which carries/that which pulls," is an animal who a particular Hindu deity uses as a mount or vehicle. The relationship between the god and mount is a sacred one, celebrated in iconography and mythology. The worship of Nandi and Shiva is ancient, and can be traced as far back as the Indus Valley Civilization. Revolutionary War or War of 1812 uniform button, marked with the royal Crown and the number "54" - has oxidized appearance, and straight shank button. 19th CENTURY LG INDO-PERSIAN PUSH DAGGER ENGRAVED

11.9" blade, 18" overall. No apparent forge or maker's mark, but the blade and grip have ornate engraving or etching. Three crossbars for grips, and two guards down either side. At the base of the blade on either side, there is a figure wearing a hat or a crown with birds on either side of him. Early Persian style push dagger, in a large size and very ornate. Blade is separate from the handle and held in place by a single hammered pin on either side. Blade is sharp on both sides and retains an edge, some discoloration to the grip section from handling. Excellent

19th CENTURY US MCKEEVER AMMUNITION POUCH UNIT MKD

Leather McKeever style ammunition pouch with brass buckles, frame, and cloth cartridge bands. Embossed on the front "US" and has "RSA" stamp inside. Handwritten unit marking "A Co." and "22" on either side of the arsenal stamp. Leather in excellent condition, with minimal cracking. Verdegris and age on the brass fittings, but otherwise excellent. Leather McKeever style ammunition pouch with brass buckles, frame, and cloth cartridge bands. Embossed on the front "US" and has "RSA" stamp inside. Handwritten unit mark...moreing "A Co." and "22" on either side of the arsenal stamp. Leather in excellent condition, with minimal cracking. Verdegris and age on the brass fittings, but otherwise excellent. Excellent

Herbert Wells Fay (1859-1949) was curator of Abraham Lincoln's tomb from 1921-1948. Fay was a relentless, life-long collector of Lincoln-related items, amassing an estimated 2 million historically significant photographs and artifacts This image was produced by Fay from an original Ambrotype he owned. The original was taken in January 1861. Measures 5" by 7" and is signed by Fay on the reverse and dated 1927. Hs been matted. Excellent

19th CENT. FOOT ARTILLERY SWORD

Interesting variation of a 19th century Foot Artillery Sword. The guard is separate from the hilt and resembles the U.S. Model 1832 Foot Artillery sword. The brass grip has hand cuttings in a crisscross pattern. The grip is held on with three rivets through the side, and the tang is peened through the pommel. The blade is heavy and has a cutting edge and false edge unlike the Model 1832. The blade is 17" long and is 1 3/4" wide. The blade is un-fullered and is bright with some blunting at point. . The only marking is the No. 21 on the right hand side of the blade above the ricasso. Very Good

N.P. AMES MODEL 1832 FOOT ARTILLERY SWORD 1838

Nice original Model 1832 N.P. Ames Foot Artillery Sword and scabbard. Sword is marked at ricasso with Eagle and N.P. Ames Springfield on one side and United States 1838 WS on the other. W.S. stands for William Smith who was a U.S. Armory Inspector from 1828-1841. 19" blade is fullered on both sides and has a gray patina. There are several small "flea bites" on the edges. Hilt is cast brass with fish scale grip and Federal Eagle on either side of the pommel. It is affixed blade with three rivets, and is peened at the pommel. The leather scabbard is sound and has a brass throat with frog stud and brass chape. A very nice example of this sword. Very Good

M1850 CIVIL WAR FOOT OFFICERS SWORD W/ SCABBARD

M1850 foot Officer's Sword. The hilt is complete with scabbard but it does have a break in the leather. The blade is 31 inches long and has nice double etching to each side of the blade but has some sharpening and is in the grey. Leather washer is absent.
