Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 30 of 931)

1876 Exposition Stumpwork State seals for the states of Wyoming, Louisiana, South Caroline, West Virginia and New York. Stumpwork or raised work is a style of embroidery in which the stitched figures are raised from the surface of the work to form a 3-dimensional effect. The first Seal of the Wyoming Territory was designed by Wyoming's first governor John A. Campbell, who issued a proclamation on May 19, 1869, ordering its use until another could be adopted by the Territorial Legislature. This seal was used on printed documents, but never struck. 2) Louisiana State Seal. The Great Seal of the State of Louisiana was adopted as the official state seal of Louisiana on April 30, 1902. The seal consists of a heraldic charge called a "pelican in her piety," representing a Brown Pelican (the Official State Bird) representing a mother pelican wounding her breast to feed her young from her own blood. This symbol, emblematic of Christian charity, is also found on the Louisiana state flag. The Louisiana state motto of "Union, justice, confidence" surrounds the birds on the state seal. An outer ring further identifies it with the words "State of Louisiana". 3) South Carolina state coat of arms for 1876 4) West Virginia. The Great Seal of the State of West Virginia was adopted in September 1863. The obverse center of the seal contains a boulder that has been inscribed June 20, 1863, the date West Virginia became a state. In front of the boulder lie two crossed rifles and a liberty cap as a symbol of the state's fight for liberty. The two men on either side of the boulder represent agriculture and industry. On the left stands a farmer with an ax and plow before a cornstalk. On the other side stands a miner with a pickax, and behind him an anvil and sledge hammer. The outer ring contains the text "State of West Virginia" and the state's motto "Montani Semper Liberi", ("Mountaineers are Always Free"; the state nickname is "the Mountain State"). The reverse of the seal, also called the lesser seal, is the official seal of the Governor. Its motto reads "Libertas E Fidelitate" ("Liberty out of Fidelity"). Liberty's left foot treads on a crown, a symbol of freedom from the Kingdom of Great Britain, and holds a staff topped with a Phrygian Cap, a symbol of freedom and the pursuit of liberty. Justice is blindfolded and holds a sword in one hand and a scale in the other, symbolizing impartiality and fairness. The center shield displays a masted ship and a sloop on the Hudson River (symbols of inland and foreign commerce) bordered by a grassy shore and a mountain range with the sun rising behind it. WW1 US NAMED BALLOON SQUADRON DSC PILOT UNIFORM

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 32 of 931)

Historically significant, WW1 US Air Service Uniform named to Lt. Lloyd G. Bowers of Birmingham Alabama who was a member of the 3d Balloon Squadron receiving the Distinguished Service Cross or DSC on July 9, 1918. The citation reads as follows: CITATION: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Service) Lloyd G. Bowers, United States Army Air Service, for repeated acts of extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 3d Balloon Squadron, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., near Gironville and Chatel-Chehery, France, August 14 - 29 and 27 October 1918. On August 14 this officer's balloon was attacked by four enemy chase machines and, though urged to jump, he remained at his post and secured information of great value. On August 29 he was attacked by enemy planes using incendiary bullets, but would not leave his post before his balloon caught fire; he insisted at once upon re-ascending, although he knew that the enemy was constantly patrolling the air. On 27 October near Chatel-Chehery, while regulating artillery fire, he was attacked by several enemy planes and his balloon was perforated by incendiary bullets. He remained in the air and carried out his observation. His extreme courage and devotion to duty furnished a splendid example to the officers and men of his command. The uniform was tailored by The House Of Kuppenheimer on April 17, 1918 about four months before engaging the enemy during the action that he received the DSC. The tunic features a stunning bullion half wing with a theater made ribbon bar with the following medals. DSC, Croix de Guerre with Palm and the Winged Victory Medal with five campaign stars. To the interior pocket is the named label nicely filled out to Lt. Lloyd G. Bowers of the 3rd Balloon Squadron. During the action that he received the DSC for, he was wounded in action and also that is reflected on his uniform on the lower right hand sleeve with a gold bullion wound stripe. On the wearers left lower sleeve are two golden overseas stripes indicating that he served at least 1 year and up to 1 year and 5 months overseas service. The tunic is in exceptional condition and simply has the look! There are a lot of Air Service tunics out there, but darn few of them are named to a DSC balloon pilot!

WW1 345TH TANK BATTALION NAMED DSC WINNER GROUP

Lot # 26a (Sale Order: 33 of 931)

WW1 Uniform grouping of Captain Courtney "Harry" Barnard of the 345th Tank Battalion and was the commander of Company C. Captain Barnard served with Col George Patton Jr. as well as future President of the United States and General of the Army . This is the most historical grouping of items we have had the privilege to sell. All of the artifacts came directly from Capt. Barnard's Son, William Barnard. The grouping consist of his 1) Uniform jacket with his armored triangle in multi colored wool and his 1st Army Division patch that is felt on wool twill on his left arm. Barnard originally had his collar insignia direct embroidered to the high stand up collar and then he had placed issue insignia over it's place. The photos in this lot show his wearing it both ways. Apparently, according to family lore is that his Commander George Patton made him place the metal insignia over top of it because George didn't want to be outdone. Also a interesting fact, according to family, George and Barnard went to to the same tailor in France to purchase their uniforms. Also, if your confused about the placement of the 1st Army patch over the armored triangle, during the Occupation, he served with he 1st. In fact, in good lighting, you can see to each side of the 1st Divisional patch and to the top, exactly where the Armored triangle was. The jacket for being 100 years old is in very good condition. 2) Two theater made overseas caps with Armored piping being yellow, red and blue. In the studio portrait he is wearing the same uniform and overseas cap with bullion captain's devices. 3) Award Citation, field document and cased Distinguished Service Cross numbered 1379. His field citation reads as followed: "Courtney H. Barnard, captain, Company C., 345th Battalion, Tank Corps. For extraordinary heroism in action at Cheppy, France, September 26,1918. During the attack on Cheppy, he personally reconnoitered on foot a passage through an extensive mine field while under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, and later led his company through this mine field and destroyed the machine-gun pests which were holding up the advance of our infantry. Captain Barnard was exposed to terrific machine-gun and artillery fire throughout the entire action, and, by his coolness and courage, set a splendid example to his men, which produced a noticeable determination on their part, which materially aided in the success of the attack." and penciled on he citation is the number 1379. Also is his type two official award document dated 1924 signed by the Secretary of War and the Adjutant General of the united States and is housed in it's original cardboard shipping tube with his name and address to it. Finally the medal in near perfect condition numbered on the lower arm 1379. This number (1379) to the medal also corresponds to Gary A. Mitchel & Col. Gleim's book by Planchet Press. shown to be awarded to him. He was awarded it for the same action that George Patton received his DSC. He was also awarded several other medals including Winged Victory medal with three bars ST. MIHIEL MEUSE ARGONNE & DEFENSIVE SECTOR. French Legion of Honour and Military Medal. State of New York WW1 Service Medal and named to the reverse City of Albany medals. Before the Tank Corps served with the 132nd Coastal Artillery No. 10 and received a named marksmanship badge and finally two VFW medals. 4) American Expeditionary Forces Photo Identity Card. OFFICER'S RECORD BOOK named to Captain Courtney H. Barnard. This book is of significant value historically as well as monetarily. The book covers his Courses of Instruction as well as his promotions. The booklet shows he received his commission 8/6/17 from the Secretary of War by direction of the President of the United States. On 30/3/18 he was promoted by his commander to 1st Lt. and signed by G.S. PATTON JR. On 29/6/18 was once again promoted to Captain and personally again signed by G.S. PATTON JR. The booklet also covers all aspects of his military service. In the back of the booklet are personal remarks about the soldier. The first on is dated France. 27 Jan. 1919. "This is to certify that Capt. C. H. Barnard, Tank Corp has been under my command for ten months, - both in training areas and in action. In the training area he proved himself to be a splendid instructor. He has fought through the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives and proved to be an excellent leader of unquestionable courage and good judgement. During the Meuse-Argonne offensive he was continuously at the "front" from the commencement of the offensive (Sept. 26) until the 2nd of Nov. I consider him a splendid officer, and would be pleased to have him in my command either in peace or war. Signed by Sereno Brett who in his own right was courageous receiving the Distinguished Service Cross and two silver stars.

WW1 IMPERIAL GERMAN HESSE WOOL FLAG WWI

Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 36 of 931)

Imperial German Hesse wool flag measures 50 X 194 inches and has an unusual anchor system to mount the flag on a building. Flag in nicely maker marked to the bunting. The flag consists of a bi-color of a red top and a bottom white stripe, in the proportion. The colors red and white are based on that of the Ludovingian coat of arms, showing a lion with a ninefold horizontal white and red division. The coat of arms was inherited by the House of Hesse upon its split from the Duchy of Thuringia in 1247, and the flag came into use in the early modern Landgraviate of Hesse; the modern Grand Duchy of Hesse used a flag with two red stripes, as did the People's State of Hesse until 1933. The flag of Thuringia was introduced in 1920, with its formation out of the fragmented Thuringian states (the Duchy of Thuringia had been absorbed into Saxony in 1400), as the reverse of the flag of Hesse
