MODEL 1797 PRIVATE CONTRACT MUSKET

Lot # 350 (Sale Order: 375 of 777)

This is an example of one of 4,000 muskets made by John Miles of North Liberties, Philadelphia for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The left rear of the barrel at breech has an inspector stamp but is pre 1800 as there is no VP eagle stamp indicating this contract dates to 1798. The lock is stamped Miles CP behind the hammer. The barrel measures 44" and bore measures .69 and has been stretched but nicely done and hard to detect. Re-browning the barrel would really make this a nice looking rifle. Features include full length walnut stock, three barrel bands, the front one consists of sight with bayonet stud on top of barrel and two sling swivels. All hardware is iron and finished in the white. This musket is in fairly good condition. The metal has taken on an age freckled clean appearance. The hammer needs replacing or repair as is broken at top and top jaw is missing. The stock is in excellent condition with just a few minor chips at long and along barrel edges. A
