TEXAS RANGER JOHN SLAUGHTER'S COLT REVOLVER

Lot # 400 (Sale Order: 428 of 777)

SERIAL 238169. BARREL 6". CALIBER .38 COLT. Belonged to arguably THE quintessential Texas Lawman and one of the most famous Texas Rangers ever to hold the title. According to factory letter, New Army # 238189, shipped as a .38 caliber, 6” barrel, nickel finish – the grips were not listed, and it was shipped to Montgomery Ward & Company in Chicago, 11/7/1904. As one of the largest retailers of Colt Firearms, Wards would then ship orders to individuals and smaller dealers as Colt only dealt with large distributors at the time. Grips are not listed on ledgers and gun now sports thick MOP stocks, probably supplied by Wards as well. The back strap is engraved "Texas John Slaughter" which was also a service of Wards. John Slaughter is a household name amongst students of the old west. "Texas John Slaughter, was an American lawman, cowboy, poker player and rancher in the Southwestern United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He holds the distinction of having been the duly elected Sheriff of the notoriously violent Cochise County just five years after the shootout at the OK Corral. After serving in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, Slaughter earned a reputation fighting hostile Indians and Mexican and American outlaws in the Arizona and New Mexico territories." Slaughter died in 1922. In addition to the engraved Colt, there is a period holster and three framed Slaughter items. One is dated 1897, El Paso Texas, is a signed agreement to pay the State $100 for Slaughter's assault on Pomposo Firmo (sp?) . The other is a letter on Slaughters Hereford's color letter head dated 1902, Dallas Texas. Lastly, an El Paso 189? letter dealing with State of Texas vs. John Slaughter. The letter describes an appeal filed by Texas John where the court finds that, "no evidence to show that the defendant used no more force in ejecting the complaining witness from the Mission than was necessary in the performance of his duties as a police officer," indicating that police have been defending themselves against accusations of brutality since before the turn of the last century. The mail order tooled single loop holster is in excellent shape and typical of mail order holsters sold by Wards. The revolver has some minor age freckles but still retains at least 95% original factory nickel finish. The trigger retains majority of original fire blue finish. All screw heads are true and retain generous amounts of blue. Gun indexes and lines up correctly. Bore is near mint. Lovely old early Colt swing out Army Navy linked to one of the more notable Wild West characters. C&R

Ad was one of the most famous of all exhibition shooters in the world beginning in 1904 at the Saint Louis Worlds fair. Elizabeth "Plinky" married Ad in 1903 and he taught her the shooting arts but she was a natural. As a traveling companion to Ad, they were soon booked across the country. They would travel by rail at night and shoot exhibitions almost every day. This went on from 1904 until her death in 1945. For 42 years, Ad & Plinky represented Winchester Firearms as a shooting team. They are considered the greatest husband and wife exhibition shooting teams of all time and many of Ad Topperwein's shooting records have yet to be broken. The names of Ad & Plinky Topperwein are still a household name to this day. When not shooting Winchester rifles or shotguns, most of the known pictures of them show the couple armed with Colt revolvers, one even shows Plinky with a long barrel Colt's Officers model. Great pair of Colt's of the period. This pair includes a small binder of reference information culled from the numerous mentions of the Topperweins to be found on the internet. The Topperwein legacy is enshrined in the Trapshooting Hall of Fame as well as the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and other firearms owned by the pair reside in a number of public and private museums across the country.
