Lot # 326 (Sale Order: 348 of 777)

SERIAL NSN. BARREL 39". CALIBER .577 PERCUSSION During the American Civil War, both the Confederates and Union forces imported large quantities of European firearms to assist them in arming their troops. The most widely used was the British Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket because of its well-made quality and accuracy. More than 1,000,000 Enfield Muskets were imported during the American Civil War. An essential factor in the application of this firearm for its time was that the .58 caliber bullet used by both Union and Confederate forces was interchangeable with the .577 Enfield. Hundreds of thousands of Enfield rifle-muskets were successfully smuggled into the South by the Confederacy during the war. This rifle has an 1863 Tower with Crown dated lock with numerous British proofs. Features three bands, military rear sight, cleaning rod, brass butt plate & trigger guard, nipple cap chain and period leather sling. Lock still shows some original blue turning plum. Iron is basically a butter scotch smooth patina. Brass trigger guard is stamped LSM. One piece walnut stock is in excellent condition. Bore is strong. Nice example of possible Civil War Confederate long gun. A
