RARE COLT BREVETE NO. 5 PATTERSON REVOLVER

Lot # 379 (Sale Order: 407 of 777)

SERIAL NSN. BARREL 4 1/4". CALIBER .36 PERCUSSION. Referred to as a Brevet , an all encompassing term for a know American Model gun that was copied and made overseas without having to pay any royalties. Colt & Smith Wesson spent millions of dollars trying to protect their product but they were not 100% successful. Numerous copies were made in Belgium using their products as example , then making their own version. Counterfeit copies of the Colt M1848 and M1849 Pocket Pistols and the new M1851 Navy flooded the European market. Many of the counterfeiters were small operations with few workers and the Colt agents found it impossible to track each down and sue in local courts. This is the first Patterson Brevet this writer has seen. Probably made in Belgium during the 1840's. It is a close copy that features an octagon barrel, fold down trigger, walnut grips, five shot, single action with cylinder scene of horse & men. The word Colt is engraved on the cylinder and top of barrel is engraved Patent Arms M'G. co. Patterson, NJ COLTS PT. All metal is clean smooth patina and the stocks are excellent. Bore is excellent. A really well made period Brevet Patterson. A
