RARE ORIGINAL 54 CALIBER ROCKET BALL CARTRIDGE

Lot # 266a (Sale Order: 281 of 676)

Developed for the Hunt and later used in the Smith Jennings repeater, the Rocket ball cartridge was a 54 caliber Minnie ball with expanding hollow base with no grease bands, A charge of black powder was contained in the internal cavity and held in place by a thin cork retainer. A small hole was in the center of the cork to allow flame from either the percussion cap as used in the hunt or in the case of the more advanced Smith Jennings rifle a Pill. These two arms are the only known firearms known to ever have used the rocketball with its separate ignition source. The Rocket ball was not a commercial success and most of the Hunt Rifles and almost all Smith Jennings were later converted to other ignition sources or to muzzle loaders. This rare cartridge is very fine with projecting charge still in tact as well as the thin cork retainer. The lead of the projectile is very slightly oxidized and the cork weathered. A rare and desired example for any cartridge collector or enthusiast. ANTIQUE
