RARE J. HAPGOOD SMALL PERCUSSION BUGGY RIFLE

BARREL 17 3/4". CALIBER .38. Joab Hapgood built custom rifles in Shrewsbury Mass from 1826-1864 as well as in Boston 1847-1864. This small scale rifle measures only 31" in length and the LOP is 11" so it was made for a lady or child. Ladies would carry these in their buggy's due to light weight and size so they are often referred to as buggy rifles. It features a half stock, single trigger, octagon barrel , long tang rear sporting sight, globe front sight, nickel plated furniture , iron hardware including patch box. The back action lock is lightly engraved and stamped J. Hapgood. Condition . Fine, HIGH CONDITION GUN. Most of the nickel plating remains. The hardware is a soft smooth dark gray patina. SERIAL NUMBER N/A BARREL 21" CALIBER .577 ENFIELD MANUFACTURED 1861. Tower manufactured .577 saddle ring carbine with bridled rammer and saddle ring bar and ring. Walnut stock with 2 retaining bands. Post front sight with folding 2 leaf carbine rear sight. Brass trigger guard and butt plate with blue steel barrel bands. Used by Police Units in the English territories and also shipped abroad for sales to the US during the US Civil War. 1861 dated lock with British proofs on breech, No military acceptance markings on stock. CONDITION Good with barrel turning plum with decent bore with some roughness in rifling. Action operates properly. Stock has several arsenal patches and repairs but remains solid. BARNETT LONDON ENFIELD TYPE MUSKATOON

BARREL 23". CALIBER .577. Very similar to the popular Enfield Musketoon, this rifle made by Barnett of London and is stamped on the lock as well as on the right side of stock. "There is no English gun maker who could more appropriately be called the “Gun Maker to the Confederacy” than the London firm of John Edward Barnett & Sons. During the course of the American Civil War, Barnett delivered thousands of Pattern 1853 “Enfield” rifle muskets, as well as Pattern 1853 Artillery and Pattern 1856 Cavalry carbines to the Confederacy." A listed but not located gunsmith of KY rifles. This one features a swamped 45" full octagon barrel in 40 caliber. It is signed J. Vendeman on barrel . The percussion lock has some light engraving but hammer stuck on cock and won't release . Has a beautiful striped maple stock in excellent condition. Left side has beautiful early American style eagle on plague. Furniture is nicely toned brass while hardware is rich soft patina with some age freckles..Nice early ,clearly signed on barrel. A

SERIAL NUMBER 96288 BARREL 5" CALIBER .31 PERCUSSION MANUFACTURED 1854. Produced by Colt with blue and case color finishes with octagon barrel and one piece varnished walnut grips. 2 line New York address with Stagecoach Ormsby cylinder scene. Cased in Colt varnished case with purple velvet lining with flask, straight leg brass .31 Colt marked bullet mold and brass "HICKS" marked cap tin with small quantity of caps. CONDITION, Very good with the revolver retaining 60% thinning blue finish on barrel and cylinder. 98% of the cylinder scene remains. The case colors remain but are cloudy and fading. The brass grip frame and trigger frame retain 75% original silver wash that has turned a pleasant patina. The grips retain most or the varnish with edge wear and minor bruises. The safety pins are smashed on the cylinder. The bore is good with slight darkness and action operates properly. The case is good with some roughness on top and fading of velvet. The partitions remain solid. The flask and mold are good and functional. All numbers remain matching. ANTIQUE

Factory engraved with scroll and vine pattern with dot punch background and birds head motif on hammer. Grip strap and trigger guard are similarly embellished with scrolls and chisel cut border. Cased in Colt casing with burgundy velvet lining with Colt pocket Model flask and straight leg brass Colt marked bullet mold and J. Goldsman percussion cap tin. CONDITION. Good with revolver having turned plum patina on barrel and frame with ctlinder being slightly cleaned. Over 80% of the Stagecoach cylinder scene remains and the revolver retains all matching numbers. The bore is good with slight darkness in grooves and action operates but hammer fails to stay on half cock or loading position. The case is good with fine exterior and faded interior lining. SERIAL NUMBER 29702 BARREL 3 1/2" CALIBER .28 PERCUSSION MANUFACTURED 1861. Invented by Elisia Root the lead engineer for Samuel Colt with unique Side Hammer operation. Produced with deep high polish blue finish and one piece walnut grips with case colored hammer and loading lever. 3rd model variation and housed in its factory case with .28 cal clamshell brass flask , steel bowleg dual cavity Colt marked mold and Union Metallic Cartridge Co, cap tin. Case is complete with key and cleaning rod. A small quantity of these Pocket Model Root revolvers were acquired by the US Capitol Police in 1860 for protection of the President of The United States Abraham Lincoln. CONDITION. Very fine and retaining nearly 60% of the factory blue finish and generous amounts of the case colors. The walnut grips retain most or the original varnish with evidence of additional finish being added. The action operates properly and the serial numbers match. The 2 line Hartford address is a very light strike as is common on this model. The case is very fine with faded velvet lining, solid partitions but is missing the escutcheon for the key slot. The flask and mold are exceptionably fine and the cap tin is good with legible label. ANTIQUE

Often referred to as the Pocket Model of Navy Caliber and produced by Colt with blue and case color finished with varnished one piece walnut grips. New York engraved in the style of Gutsave Young. Frame is embellished with broad scroll and vine motif with barrel breech and rammer trunnion engraved to match. Grip straps are engraved in similar scrolls intertwined and silver washed as is frame. Rebated 5 shot cylinder has Ormsby Stagecoach scene and retains all five safety pins. One piece varnished walnut grips and single line New York barrel address. Hammer and trigger are case colored. CONDITION. Very fine with over 75% barrel finish remaining. Cylinder has toned to a plum color with all cylinder scene remaining. Frame and grip straps retain virtually all of the heavy silver wash plating and has evidence of being slightly polished. Bore is very fine and screws are equally fine. Action operates properly. SERIAL NUMBER 6608 BARREL 7 1/2" CALIBER .36 PERCUSSION MANUFACTURED 1851. Very scarce Colt 1st Model Navy revolver with octagon barrel 6 shot cylinder with Ormsby Naval engagement cylinder scene. One piece varnished walnut grips and single line New York barrel address. Brass backstrap and trigger guard assembly. These early Navy Model Colts saw extensive use during the War of Northern Aggression and were coveted by the Gallant Southern forces. CONDITION, Good as found with revolver being totally void of finish from use. Matching numbers with the exception of un-numbered barrel wedge. Bore is good and action operates properly. Over 50% of the cylinder scene remains and evidence of muzzle having been slightly filed to remove a period dent. Grips are full sized and retain small amounts of varnish. This revolver was obtained in the Memphis TN area recently. ANTIQUE

All matching numbers including cylinder which was renumbered by factory to match others. These were the first of the Colt cartridge guns that were part of the western expansion era. Blue finish with varnished walnut two piece grips. Marked with a #48 on bottom of barrel and on trigger guard, hammer and cylinder. These conversions were used extensively in the American West CONDITION, Good with fine bore and properly operating action. Grips are full sized and good overall with "W.C.S." carved on base. Beautifully factory engraved in broad scrolls and vine on barrel with frame adorned with engraved bronze scroll engraved plaque. Revolver is housed in superior factory picture box with nearly full broad board label. The Manhattan had a short existence due to its direct patent violation of the Rollin White patent and subsequently production was ceased. CONDITION. Good with good bore and properly operating action. Traces of blue finish remain in protected areas as well as silver wash under grip line. Grips are very fine, full sized and retain most all varnish.
