USMC SHIPPED COLT 1911 PISTOL- 1914

Lot # 78 (Sale Order: 78 of 676)

SERIAL NUMBER 84393. BARREL 5". CALIBER .45ACP. MANUFACTURED 1914. Unlike the Navy stamped Model 1911's made prior to the first war and shipped to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, guns made and shipped to the Philadelphia Marine Corp base during that same era were never marked USMC. Never the less, although they are marked like a standard US Army, the shipping records show documented blocks of pistols sent to the Marines. This example falls into the third block of guns shipped in 1914 ( serial 83901-84400). It comes with a copy of a 2017 letter from the National Museum of the Marine Corp confirming this gun was shipped to Marine base in Philly. The frame is stamped United States Property. The slide is a Colt's patent 1913 stamped that was made by Savage Arms. There is also a theory that these slide were made at Springfield since the only telling marks is an S stamped in the arsenal bomb stamp on slide. Regardless, these slides were period WWI replacement slides as Savage never made any complete 1911's. These would have been used in case of damage to the original and would have been field repaired to get gun back in service. Although we cannot be certain who and when the Savage slide was added, the overall patina of the finish seems to be a near perfect match to the gun and in our opinion, has been on there for most of this guns life. All other period features include original diamond checkered walnut grips, all proper legends, checkered wide spur hammer, flat main spring housing with lanyard ring, checkered safety, U-notched bevel edge rear sight, correct front sight, long smooth trigger. Pistol has a WWI period two tone magazine, a later replacement post war slide stop and a replacement barrel. Condition. All butter smooth brown patina. All legends are sharp. Someone period hand scored the front grip strap. Grips show were with couple of replacement screws. Scarce example of rare USMC shipped Colt C&R
