PRE / POST WAR COLT .38 SUPER MATCH 1911-A1

Lot # 257 (Sale Order: 265 of 687)

SERIAL NUMBER 48143. BARREL 5". CALIBER .38 SUPER. MADE IN 1947. The mismatched number 19952 slide is a pre war stamped, ca. 1936 Super Match Super 38 . The frame number lists as a .38 Super from 1947. Colt was using a combination of pre war parts melded with newly made post war parts to ship pistols as soon as possible after the war. The frame has the 1947 non glare two tone blue while slide is all high polish factory blue. All of the small parts are pre war type checkered with exception to the grooved arched main spring housing. The finish and wear look like they have been together forever. Grips are full checkered walnut. Magazine is two tone tempered pre war with stamped base. It is entirely plausible that Colt used a left over Super Match stamped slide given the sights are standard fare on any 1940-50 .38 Super and any prospective buyer in 1947 could have cared less if the slide was stamped Super Match or if the slide number did not match frame, it was simply a .38 Super shipped in 1947 with blued finish. This conclusion is not only logical if you consider it a fact that Colt mixed parts soon after the war and given the matching wear and finish color, is what happened. This gun is accompanied by a fascimile copy of the original Colt factory letter which lists this pistol as having been shipped October 4, 1947 to Hall & Knight Hardware Company in Lewiston, Maine as part of a 6 piece shipment. Condition. Slide shows light high edge wear only. Same with frame although front strap matte finish is thinning. Grips are near mint. Excellent bore. Sharp magazine. All legends sharp as new. C&R
