GRIFFIN, HOWE & POPE CUSTOM WINCHESTER HIGH WALL

Lot # 143 (Sale Order: 145 of 687)

SN POPE 722. BARREL 30" # 3 1/2 WT. CALIBER .22 long rifle. This is a small bore LH target rifle finished by the legendary Harry M. Pope and stocked by the equally renowned firm of Griffin & Howe. The rifle, based on Pope serial number, was built in 1927-1929. The basis for this amazing rifle is the tried and true Winchester 1885 High Wall action. H M POPE is stamped on top of the heavy full round barrel that was made with no provision for barrel sights. Underneath barrel is stamped HM Pope, serial 722, date Sept 21, 1928. The Pope style lever is engraved "Stocked by Griffin & Howe, Inc. New York" This rifle was personally built for one Mr. W.W. Hixon of Omaha NE, who drove to Popes home in New Jersey to place an order for "the finest rifle available for use in the small bore matches" , then being held at the Sea Girt Range in New Jersey. Hixon was a south paw. The "rifle barrel and action work was completed to Popes satisfaction on Sept 21, 1928". Pope then forwarded the barreled action to the firm of Griffin & Howe to be stocked and completed according to Hixon's instructions. Once completed, the rifle was returned to Pope in January of 1929 with the lever inscription verifying G&H work. Mr. Hixon drove back to New Jersey and sighted the rifle at the Sea Girt small bore matches. He only used the rifle in that one match as he was killed in a car accident soon after. Hixon was a large man which accounts for the 14 3/4" LOP. The G&H stock consisted of straight grain American walnut, finely checkered with pistol grip and steel cap. The butt plate is Swiss style with no upper arm. All metal is finished blue. The rifle also sports an original Malcolm scope. The scope is dark and cloudy and inoperable with a couple dents. As to condition, having seen little use, the barrel is now a smooth blend of blue and patina. The frame retains about 95% or better Pope blue. The stocks are excellent with just some minor impressions. Bore is sharp as new. A fantastic and well preserved rifle with the famed combination team of Pope and Griffin & Howe. C&R
