MARLIN MODEL 94 MUSKET FROM BUREAU COUNTY IL,

Lot # 150 (Sale Order: 152 of 687)

SERIAL NUMBER 112218 BARREL 30" CALIBER 38-40 WCF MANUFACTURED 1894. Shipped from Marlin with blue finish, round barrel, post front sight to accept socket bayonet and barrel mounted folding staff rear sight. varnished walnut stocks with forearm retained by 2 bands and carbine pattern butt. Top of receiver has been stamped "BUREAU COUNTY". Reported to be 1 of 80 muskets shipped from Marlin, Sept 21, 1894. for prison / jail security use by Bureau County. However Bureau County detention faculty was only a small county jail only large enough to hold a couple in inmates. It appears that research by noted Marlin collector Richard Ellis that Bureau County did purchase from Marlin about 80 of the Model 1894 Muskets to issue to deputized county residents to be able and ready to respond to an emergency in their community. This according to Col, Brophy's BOOK OF MARLIN FIREARMS. This rare Musket is accompanied with a factory letter dated Dec, 1960 indicating the date of manufacture as 1894 and as a musket with no other information available. However the letter continues with a request to allow Marlin to trade this rare musket for a new rifle or carbine as they did not have one in their collection. CONDITION, Very fine with Musket retaining over 97% brilliant factory blue finish. Lever and hammer retain vast amounts of their deft case colors. Bore is excellent and bright. The action operates properly. The walnut stocks are very fine with some minor impressions. This is a recent discovery and never before offered for sale. ANTIQUE
