OHIO NATIONAL GUARD WINCHESTER 37 RIOT SHOTGUN

Lot # 148 (Sale Order: 144 of 691)

SERIAL: 2644 (originally sold commercially without Serialization) BARREL: 21" CALIBER: 12 GA This is a commercial "red letter" Winchester Model 37 single shot shotgun to which an ad-hoc bayonet lug has been added to the muzzle which fits an M1 Garand bayonet. The left side of the receiver has "OHIO" and "2644" Electro penned on the side. The use of single shot shotguns by a number of National Guard units during and just after the Vietnam war era in response to intense civil unrest due to Civil Rights, war protest demonstrations, and labor strikes, is documented. Supply lines for military weapons were being diverted to Vietnam and state guard units resorted to purchasing shotguns commercially and modifying them to suit their needs. The state of Ohio was particularly eager to bolster its National Guard riot arsenals after the events at Kent State University in 1970. This shotgun has evidence of storage wear, age wear at the muzzle and metal parts, and has had the original commercial finish removed and wood stained for a more military appearance. Good C&R
