WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 44 RIMFIRE MUSKET

Lot # 238 (Sale Order: 237 of 675)

SERIAL NUMBER 51898 BARREL 27" CALIBER 44 RIM FIRE MANUFACTURED 1870. As the Winchester Repeating Arms company started to dominate the commercial arms business with the 1866 rifle and carbine, they decided to approach the military and international market. The introduction of the Musket version of the 1866 rifle with long barrel and magazine with the post front sight that was able to accept a socket bayonet. Lever action high capacity rifle using self contained cartridges with a ladder adjustable rear sight and brass reciver and butt plate with steel barrel bands. Winchester quickly sold large quantities to a number of South American countries as well as Germany and France in Europe. This example with the 2 line Winchester barrel address on the barrel with 2 piece American walnut stock with trap in butt for cleaning rods. A very unusual feature of this musket is that it has traces of silver plating on the receiver. Most likely used as a guard gun for high level political personnel. CONDITION, Good with very good walnut stocks. The barrel and magazine have been cleaned and are void of finish and it appears this was done intentionally and long ago. The brass receiver has speckles of silver in numerous areas. The bore is brilliantly bright with sharp rifling and appears to have seen little use. The rifle has had the top sling swivel and stud removed long ago and no trace can be seen of its original location. It is believed that this Winchester 1866 Musket was most likely carried as a ceremonial guard rifle. ANTIQUE
